By your Spirit transform us and your beloved world, that we may find our joy in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Announcements The Entrance Rite The Liturgy of the Word First Lesson: Acts 1:15-17, In those days Peter stood up among the believers (together the crowd numbered about one hundred twenty persons) and said, 16 Friends, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus 17 for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry." 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection." 2

Psalm 1 (Sung in unison) 1Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! 2Their delight is in the law of the LORD, and they meditate on his law day and night. 3They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; everything they do shall prosper. 4It is not so with the wicked; they are like chaff which the wind blows away. 5Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, nor the sinner in the council of the righteous. 6For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wick- ed is doomed. Second Lesson: 1 John 5:9-13 9If we receive human testimony, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has testified to his Son. 10 Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 3

C Glory to you, O Lord. 6I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8 for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 4

P The Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon Hymn of the Day LBW #364 Son of God, Eternal Savior Nicene Creed P Let us profess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed. C We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers A Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. The Great Thanksgiving The Eucharistic Meal Preface and Sanctus P It is indeed right and salutary...we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 6

7 Eucharistic Prayer P You are indeed holy, almighty and most merciful God. You give life and wondrously restore life in your risen Son, Christ Jesus our Lord. We praise you as the God of promise, delivering your chosen people Israel from their captivity in slavery and giving them new life in the land promised to faithful Abraham; and though they experienced the death of exile and captivity, by the prophets you remained faithful to your promise, giving them renewed life in their own land. We praise you for Jesus, born of Mary by the power of your Spirit, the first-born from the dead. Through the exile of his own suffering on the cross he served us as victim and priest, and through him you have delivered us from our exile and captivity to sin and death, giving us the joys of life everlasting, fulfilling all covenants and promises. Send your Holy Spirit to breathe new life into us and to bless these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be for us the body and blood of our living host, Jesus Christ our Savior. 7

8 On the night of his betrayal our Lord Jesus took bread. When he had given thanks to you, gracious Father, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. When supper had ended, he took the cup; then, after giving thanks to you, gracious Father, he gave it to them, saying: All of you, drink of this; this cup is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sins. Do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, Father, before you we proclaim the mystery of faith: C Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. P We offer to you, most holy God, our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, remembering this holy season all you have done through the Passion and Resurrection of your Son. In this Holy Communion, you unite us in the sacrifice of our eternal High Priest. Through the promise he made to his disciples, we await his final coming to fulfill all of life and to make new the heavens and the earth. C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P As we now gather to receive this Holy Sacrament of Christ s body and blood, strengthen us in the forgiveness of sins and grant us the fullness of your salvation and peace. 8

9 Lord s Prayer P Joining with all those who, in every time and place have turned to you, we pray as Christ himself taught us: C Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. The Liturgy Our worship is the historic liturgy of the Christian Church - a celebration of Word and Sacrament, the means through which God gives forgiveness, life and salvation. The Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated in accordance with the understanding of the Lutheran Confessions that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine. All baptized Christians are welcome to receive the Blessed Sacrament. Approach the chancel rail by the center aisle as a place becomes vacant. Dip the bread in the first cup or drink from the common chalice. They listen to God s Word, gather at the Lord s table, serve as readers, acolytes, choir members, and more. Feel free to take children in and out as necessary. Nursery care is available for children who are infants through pre-school age. Please ask an usher. Worship resources are found in the pews. The Lutheran Book of Worship (noted LBW inside the bulletin) is the green hardback hymnal. The With One Voice (noted WOV inside the bulletin) is the blue softback hymnal. A hand-held hearing aid system is available and can be used anywhere in the church. Founded in 1733 with the baptism of Maria Catharina Beyer, Christ Church was the first Lutheran congregation west of the Susquehanna River. Christ Church remains an active and vibrant congregation carrying on the mission of Christ and approaches the future with confidence and hope. Christ Church strives to minister in faithfulness to Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. Its ministry centers in the weekly liturgy of Word and Sacrament and pursues particular Lutheran emphases in art and music, fellowship, education, and pastoral care. Three buildings have been used for worship. A log building was erected in 1744; a stone building replaced it in Two bells from the 1760 stone building still call people to worship in the present building, built in Three Lutheran congregations in York are descendants of Christ Church. 12
