In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Jesus, our guide and our truth, came not to abolish the law or the prophets, but to fulfill, and to call us to follow in his footsteps. Let us therefore confess before God, those ways we fail to let our lights shine before others. We confess S T. You have set before us life and prosperity and yet we often choose the ways of death and adversity. You call us to follow you, and yet we walk in our own directions. You command us to love you, and our neighbors and yet we often see those who are different than ourselves as somehow not members with us in the family of God. You call us to forgive and turn the other cheek, to give freely as you give, and yet we seek an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth and withhold that which you have called us to share. In your mercy, forgive us. Help us to love and obey you, and hold fast to you all the length of our days so that we may live as your baptized children of light. We remain kneeling as the pastor offers God s absolution and forgiveness. Following absolution we stand for the hymn, facing the processional cross as we begin.

We sit b WORD b CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) FIRST READING: GENESIS 1:1-5 1In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. GOSPEL: MARK 1:4-11 4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased. Lutheran Men Annual Blood Drive - Help Save 100 Lives! Our goal is to save 100 lives...every donation saves 3 lives! We need at least 34 donors. Please consider donating blood to the American Red Cross when the Lutheran Men host the annual blood drive on January 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Donating blood will take thirty minutes to an hour. If you are an experienced donor, you can register with the Red Cross app or online at redcrossblood.org. Family Promise Family Promise is a one-week shelter for families who are temporarily experiencing homelessness. Host churches provide the families with an evening meal, sleeping space and a common area where they can relax together. St. Andrew s Lutheran Church will be hosting Family Promise the week of January 14 January 21, You may sign up on the board in the Narthex for volunteer opportunities for the week, or contact Steve Slice at or SPSlice@yahoo.com. Lenten Devotional The church staff is already looking toward Lent which will start on February 14 with Ash Wednesday. Again this year, we would like to have a Lenten devotional written by members of the congregation. If you would like to be a part of this project, please contact Sandra Holland at sholland@salutheran.com. Greeters Needed We are now working on the new greeter schedule which will start in February. If you would like to be a part of this ministry of hospitality, please let Sandra Holland know or contact Lina Gann in the church office. We are getting ready to launch another round and hope that even more people will take advantage of this fun way to get to know members of our church family.
