3 PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Mighty God, you breathe life into our bones, and your Spirit brings truth to the world. Send us this Spirit, transform us by your truth, and give us language to proclaim your gospel, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST READING: ACTS 2:1-21 We sit. b WORD b 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them speaking about God s deeds of power. 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? 13 But others sneered and said, They are filled with new wine. 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord s great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.. SECOND READING: ROMANS 8: We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; 23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. 24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. 26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. 27 And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. GOSPEL: JOHN 15:26-27; 16:4B-15 [Jesus said,] 26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27 You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. 16:4b I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, Where are you going? 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; 11 about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. 12 I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his

5 own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine. AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM (11:00 a.m.) After the pastor addresses the Confirmand, we join in the Creed as follows: Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.* On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. After the Confirmand makes public affirmation, the minister addresses the assembly.

6 People of God, do you promise to support this sister and pray for her in her life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Those making public affirmation stand and face the assembly. Let us rejoice with our sister in Christ. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive us those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Those unable to partake of wine or wheaten bread are assured that the Church affirms our Lord s presence in, with, and under each element alone; however, gluten free wafers and grape juice are available. Micah Aebischer will graduate from Brookland-Cayce High School and will attend Clemson University in the fall. Donna Birdsong will graduate from Irmo High School and will attend USC Honors in the fall. Matthew Hawkins will graduate from Dutch Fork High School and will attend USC in the fall. Lindy Player will graduate from Spring Hills High School and will attend Anderson University in the fall. John Slice will graduate from River Bluff High School and will attend USC in the fall. IN THE MEANTIME In the Meantime is a monthly get together to simply talk about matters of faith and life. We will be meeting at MELLOW MUSHROOM in the Vista (1009 Gervais Street Columbia) today at 5:30 pm. There is food available and beverages of your choice. We will be meeting in the upstairs private room. Come join us and bring a friend! NEW CHURCH PICTORIAL DIRECTORY 2018 It's time again to publish a new church pictorial directory and we'd like to repeat the process used for the last one by having members send in their favorite family photo for inclusion. Many of you were spotted smiling for cameras by the flowered Easter cross earlier this month. It would be so easy get those pictures off your phones and into the directory by ing officemgr@salutheran.com! An even easier means would be to have your family's photo taken by one of the Communications Team after worship services during the month of May. We'll be in the narthex and gathering area ready to capture you in your Sunday best. We want all of our members to be included and will be making visits to our shut-ins so they too can continue to be recognized as a beautiful part of our community. If anyone would like to volunteer to help with this service, please let Beth Mullins or Paul Osmundson know. HOMELESS HELP BAGS There are ziplock bags in the narthex packed with basic supplies to help someone in need. Take one!

11 DONATION BOX IN THE GATHERING AREA Our 2018 WELCA Convention Project is for Lutheran Services of the Carolinas Love One Another Campaign. A box for donations will be placed in the Gathering Area for all who would like to help. Items needed: combs, toothbrushes, pens and pencils, socks (all sizes), sponges, Walmart and Target gift cards. Items will be delivered to the WELCA Convention, to be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Columbia on June 8-9. THRESHOLD SINGERS Volunteers needed to sing with hospice patients A local hospice house is interested in forming small groups of singers who would be available to sing occasionally, either at the Hospice Houses or at the homes of individuals under hospice care. These groups of two or three volunteers would sing to bring ease and comfort to those at the thresholds of living and dying. If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry, please contact Jenny Walrath at or jwalrath@salutheran.com and she can give you more information. She potentially envisions St. Andrew s having two or three teams of volunteers that would rotate, and sing several times a year CHURCH YEARBOOK If you would like a copy of the 2018 Church Yearbook, you may pick one up in the Narthex or stop by the church office.
