E. D. Fujii When you can t sleep at night, don t take sleeping pills. Read Kyo-Gyo-Shin- Sho which is Shinran s major work: Less-than-one-page reading knocks you down in bed. Shinran Shonin ( ) finished it once at the age of 52 in It was the year Jodo-Shin-Shu historically started in Japan and in the world as well, although the work is not an easy one to read. Shinran Shonin was serious but stubborn because he did not agree when anything was not clearly presented. His solution of life and death was not a gamble, but it was a very serious business: He was just honest to himself. Then, finally Nembutsu path was clearly and widely opened to him. It was the moment Shinran made a great contribution to mankind. We are very fortunate because we were born after him, and because we belong to Sangha which shares Nembutsu Teaching together. I will see you at the service. Note: Jo-do: The World of Purity, or Perfect Enlightenment Shin: Real and true Shu: Teaching This Month s Buddhist Holiday... No doubt, you have all seen the beautiful Bonsai trees and plants in the Hondo during the Sakura Matsuri Festival. Have you ever wondered just how these are created?? The Bonsai trees in the Tamaii Towers and Temple courtyards do not stay trim and beautiful all by themselves. It is our club that trims and maintains these Bonsai trees. You can be a DENVER BONSAI by Kim Morehouse and Tom Taggert part of this! The DENVER BONSAI CLUB wants to welcome our newest member, Conner Ospina and invites YOU to come join us and learn about how to create and maintain your very own Bonsai. 2 Happy New Year! How many of you have made your New Year s Resolutions? How many of you have committed these resolutions to paper? Or said them aloud? When I was a kid, the activity that marked the end of the holiday season was setting at the kitchen table to write out New Year s Resolutions. I imagine this was as much a teaching moment on the part of my mother as it was an effort to get five bored school kids through the final stretch of Winter Break. I vaguely recall a goal of three resolutions each AND they had to be thoughtfully conceived or we were doomed to sit at the table and try, again, until we could present a neatly written, grammatically correct list of viable New Year s Resolutions. [I don t often recount the terrors of my strict upbringing because, as you may well know, my parents are still living and active members of our Sangha. In fact, they are fairly well-known for their kindness and steady sense of logic. Please know that my present day parents are not the same people as my childhood parents.!][in fact, they seem to have transformed their entire personas the instant they became grandparents but that s a whole nother story.] Anyway, back to the resolutions, I think I remember my mother explaining resolutions as promises or self-created rules made with the purpose of improving oneself. And she tried to make it sound wonderful that every New Year for the rest of our lives, we could wipe the slate clean of last year s attempts and begin anew with a new set of promises/rules. And, since these resolutions were self-composed (self-inflicted), we were expected to actually abide by them and, in fact, become the better person we envisioned (thus, the need to document our thoughts in writing so the paper could always be brought out into evidence, er ahem, reference). So there we would sit (my brother, sisters and me) at the kitchen table for an excruciating morning of Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples 1947 Lawrence Street Denver CO (303) FAX (303) dinouye@tsdbt.org For newsletter contributions, submit your article by the 10th of each month for publication in the next month s issue. For additional information, or to read the newsletter online, go to our website at A Word From the Temple Office by Donna Inouye self-reflection and demands. These days I think it is common for people to resolve to eat better, to exercise more and to stop procrastinating. However, back then, each of us quickly learned that the generic resolution I resolve to not open a new box of cereal until the old box of cereal has been completely consumed, would most likely be tossed out (especially if presented within the first 10 minutes) with instruction to think harder, while those resolutions which revolved around good behavior I promise in this New Year of 196X, to not fight with (fill-in-the-blank with a sibling s name)would be most enthusiastically accepted and the lucky author would be one step closer to being excused from the kitchen table of torture. (Please note that you could not fulfill the requirement of three resolutions simply by repeating this resolution with three separate names!) I doubt that my parents (or my siblings, for that matter) would recall our New Year resolutionmaking endeavors with the same level of trepidation. Their memories, of course, would be of a gentler more benevolent nature. I, myself, only retell these horrific (maybe, possibly embellished) memories so you can truly appreciate my list of three New Year s Resolutions for 2011 which are.. 1) I resolve to clean my office and keep it that way, 2) I resolve to not open a new ream of paper until the copier absolutely insists it is out of paper, and 3) I promise in this New Year of 2011, to not fight with. Happy New Year to All and best wishes for a year of growth, laughter and generosity! Tamai Tower Apartment availability Are you 62 years or older? Are you disabled? Studio and one-bedroom apartments are available at Tamai Tower in Sakura Square. These units are for those who can live independently on their own. Rents, which include all utilities, are based on your adjusted gross income under the Section 8 contracts. Although, there are no Section 8 contracts available at this time for one-bedroom apartments, the Section 236 rent is currently between $561 and $578/month. The market rent for the one bedroom apartment is $578/month. If interested, please call Mabel Googins at Page 2 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Month 2010

3 BWA NEWS by Mitzi Kishiyama The BWA s general meeting was held on November 14 th. Some comments overheard during the potluck lunch were: this is like oshogatsu (New Year s food), I never make this kind of delicious foods and I ll have to learn to cook some of these dishes. Needless to say, the lunch was wonderful thanks to everyone. Now for the business part of the meeting. A donation of $ will be made to the Endowment fund. It will go into a ministerial fund to assist those in the ministerial assistant programs and any other ministerial expenses that may occur. Kathryn Ida gave a report on the student exchange program to Japan that she and KC Stewart attended in August. She presented to the members a nice pair of chopsticks from them. Next August, we will be hosting two girls from Japan. Two families have volunteered to host the girls. BWA will coordinate activities with YBA and dharma school to welcome them to Colorado. We continue to make visitations to members in assisted living/nursing homes. Please keep us updated who are in the homes. From March 7, 2010 to November 13, 2010, we helped with eight funeral receptions. The orei (gratuity) we receive is appreciated. We have been asked to make obento for the Kohaku Uta Gassen on January 29, Please help on Thursday, Jan. 27 th to clean chicken, Friday, Jan. 28 th for prep work, and on Saturday, Jan. 29 th to finish cooking and filling the obento boxes. Thoughts on Gratitude presented by Jr. YBA teacher, Cameo Haddan When the students first come to my class they still think of themselves as children. I was never treated like a child, so I do the same for them. They learn that they are responsible for the quality of their experiences. We cover many things throughout the year. I start by making them aware of their actions, thoughts and speech. Then we go over the Eightfold Path. We spend a lot of time on each one.i want them to really understand it in a way they hadn t thought of before. We also discuss gratitude. For our newsletter I had each student write a paragraph on gratitude. Here they are: I am grateful for sound, technology and life because they are in my life. Life is life, so it s really important. I am also grateful for more things than I can list. Another thing I am grateful for is sight. This is important and wanted because it is used more and more each year. - Andrew Horiuchi I am thankful for my parents, my pets and my brother. My grandparents, my home, my books, my technology, my and...pretty much everything else. Everyone should be grateful for everything in their world, because everything is precious. - Armand Kong Quee Page 4 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Month 2010

5 Jr. YBA Students Express Gratitude As there are many things in this world that I am grateful for I will only tell you about the things I am the most grateful for. The thing that I am the most grateful for would be my dad. This would be because he has always been there for me through thick and thin. The thing I am the next most grateful for is that I live somewhere where I have the privilege to go to a school and get a good education. Another thing I am grateful for would be that I live somewhere in this world where I am not afraid of being in danger such as Africa.-Brian Horiuchi I am grateful for a lot of things. I am grateful for my family and friends. They help me whenever I m in need. I am also grateful for my education and teachings. They will help me throughout my life. I am grateful for humanities too, such as food and entertainments. I am fortunate every day, but sometimes I don t realize it. Every day is a day full of thankfulness and gratitude. We should open our eyes and see all of those things. -Bryan Tanigawa Even though many problems flow through my life, I am grateful. I am thankful for my family, my friends and the conflicts I ve encountered and learned from. Sometimes it s hard to find thanks in sticky situations, but with a positive mind set and good people around you, thanks come In the Dharma easily. Next time you find you re complaining and whining, think of your life and what makes you happy. Be thankful for it and never take it for granted. -Cami Shigaya I m grateful for living in the USA, the best country in the world. We re able to eat and help others in the rest of the world. Also, I am thankful for T.V. Without television we would actually have to read to find the news. Then none of us would be here since it would take so long to find the weather, then get ready to go. -Connor Ospina I am grateful for my Grandmother because she is the person that put a roof over my head, food on my plate and clothes on my back. I am fortunate to have my Grandmother. Without her I would not be here! -Daniel Terao (continued from page 4) I am grateful for many things. Here are some things I am grateful for. My family because they take care of me and provide me with food, clothes, they pay for my piano lessons and school supplies. I am grateful for my piano teacher because she dedicates her time, teaching me for an hour every week. Those are some things I am grateful for. -Emiko Hardman I am grateful for everything of importance in my life. I am grateful for my school, knowing I can have an educated life and own things to help me learn. I m even more grateful for what I have that I sometimes overlook, like food, nice clothes and a house to live in. But most of all I am grateful for my friends. Every single one of them has stuck with me through thick and thin, and we stick up for each other. I feel happy with them. -Emily Nguyen I am grateful for my life. I love my mom and everything she does. I am grateful for everything my dad does, too. I love him as well. I am grateful for my opportunities to express my creativity. I am grateful for my education of which I can persistently work. I am grateful for the many opportunities of math, science, music, language and world history. -Khalil Kong Quee I am thankful for my family because they take care of me and feed me and my brother. I am thankful that I have a phone because just in case of an emergency I can call my Mom, Dad, Jo and my brother Addison. I am grateful and thankful for all I get. I am grateful and thankful for my family. -Landon Squibbs I have gratitude for a lot of material things in my life. I am very thankful for my horse, which my mother was nice enough to take the opportunity for me. I am also grateful for my new house, which is closer to my school. I thank my mother also for my phone, so I constantly stay in the social loop. Thanks to my family for Directv, and my television to watch it on. I give thanks to my family who love me very much. -Miko Holmes (continued on page 7) Month 2010 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Page 5
