Excepted are those who, in accordance with their original vows (their wishes) to guide others freely to enlightenment, don the armor of universal vows for the sake of sentient beings, accumulate roots of virtues, emancipate all beings, travel to Buddha-lands to perform bodhisattva practices, make offerings to all the Buddha-tathagatas throughout the 10 quarters, awaken sentient beings countless as the sand of the Ganges (river), and bring them to abide firmly in supreme, true enlightenment. Such bodhisattvas surpass those in the ordinary bodhisattva stages in carrying out practices; in reality, they cultivate the virtue of Samantabhadra. Should it not be so, may I not attain the perfect enlightenment. (Vow #22). Samantabhadra is translated into Chinese as Universal Good or Universal Wisdom. virtue indicates working or action as opposed to being an idea or thought. So, when the bodhisattvas cultivate the virtues of universal wisdom before they return to this world, what kind of virtues do they practice or perform? One basic doctrine in the Teaching is to see everything and everyone as they are without any judgments or discrimination. This view is free of assessments such as good and bad, young and old, beautiful and ugly, sick and healthy, handicapped or not, educated or not. Wisdom means viewing everyone and everything as they are. November Buddhist Holiday Eitaikyo When I was a high school student, my school visited a beautiful Kyoto Buddhist temple located deep in the mountains. Early in the morning, we were greeted in a cold room by a priest who explained this and that. Then, as he stood in front of a statue of Amida Buddha, he asked, Do you think this Buddha is female or male? One student replied, Amida Buddha is male because the statue does not have breasts. I agreed with the student, but the priest simply said, Amida Buddha is not female. So, another student reasoned, If not, the Buddha must be male. The priest said, No, Amida Buddha is not male, either. Then every student became puzzled, confused and kept quiet. (continued on page 2) November 2015 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Page 1

2 Monthly Salutations from Rev. Diana Thompson Hello everyone, welcome to November, the month of gratitude. Gratitude is something that we should be practicing as often as we can, but we become more aware of it when a holiday comes up that has thanks right in the title. At Thanksgiving, we are encouraged to give thanks for our families, friends, our food (of course), and, if you are a sports fan, the football game. (provided your team wins ). Because food is such a major part of this holiday, a simple way for us to express our gratitude is by saying itadakimasu before eating and gochisosama afterwards. Itadakimasu literally means to place on one s head and is way of bowing to all the causes and conditions which made the meal possible. Gochisosama is an expression of thanks to all of the hard work that was expended for our benefit. Go and sama are honorifics and chiso means running back and forth. These two simple phrases are an acknowledgment of the fact that our food does not come to us magically but requires the work and sacrifices of many. The phrase increase our awareness of the great chain of being and therefore help to make us more grateful for what we have. Also in the month of November, we have an observance at the temple called Eitaikyo. This was started as a way to gather funds for the temple in order to ensure that future generations would be able to hear the Dharma. The Eitaikyo fund is collected Denver Buddhist Temple Choir By Audrey Charness The choir is excited for a new year of singing and representing the Denver Buddhist Temple the best way we can. We are a growing group and are optimistic that more people will continue to join us. If you have any interest or enjoy singing, even if it is just in the shower, please come to a practice that happens twice a month after the adult service. We will welcome you with open arms. The choir is a voluntary service for the Temple, but we do have a lot of fun. As a choir member, we realize your schedules may prevent you from attending all practices, so support is greatly appreciated whenever your calendar permits. This November, we will be performing in the Interfaith Service on Thanksgiving Day. We have been practicing hard on two different songs to get ready for the day: Mimegumi No and Let Peace Prevail. We will come together to fill the Hondo with peace, love and sharing of our faith. We have some exciting new changes in the near horizon for our group and we truly hope that you will consider being a part of this growth and positive changes. through donations from temple members and is held in case of emergency. The Eitaikyo service is a way for us to say thank you to all those who helped to keep our temples running and to remember that we are now the ones who are charged with care of the temple to keep it running for future generations. Eitaikyo means perpetual chanting of sutras and as we chant together at the service, we are connecting ourselves to all those who came before and all those who will follow. Gratitude is not simply an awareness of what we have at the present moment, but also an awareness of our place in the great chain of being. Many causes and conditions down through the distant past have brought us to this moment and our contributions to the here and now will have an effect on the future. Both Eitaikyo and Thanksgiving are observances that give us a chance to cultivate this awareness. Whether chanting, eating, or even watching football, try to take a moment to reflect, in gratitude, on all those who came before who made this moment possible and how you, too can make gratitude possible for all those who come after. Namo Amida Butsu 22nd Vow - Conclusion (continued from page 1) The priest said that Amida Buddha has no gender. Conceivably, if Amida were female, she might favor young handsome males with her attention, conversely, if Amida were male, he might pay more attention to women. But Amida is beyond gender. The Buddha deals with anybody without discrimination or bias because the Buddha is freed from any attachment. What do you think about this explanation? 3 1 五つの後悔 (1/6) ある看護婦さんの書いた本 私はその本を読んでいないが 書評には簡略にその内容が記されていた その看護婦さんは死に行く人々と話しているうちに 共通した五つの後悔 を人々が抱いていることを知った つまりは死に臨んだ人々が抱えている 人生における五つの大きな後悔 を書いたのがその本である では その五つとは何か? 1. 自分らしく生きればよかった 2. あんなにがむしゃらに働くことはなかった 3. 言いたいことを我慢せず はっきりと口に出せばよかった 4. もっと友達と連絡をとればよかった 5. もっと自分の幸福を追求すればよかった さて 五つの後悔を一読してどう思っただろうか 全ての死に行く人々がこれら五つを抱えているわけではないが 上位五位が上記の五つなのである 内容からすると 例えば第 2 第 3 の後悔は主に男性だと思われる そしてこれら五つからうかがい知れることは 振り返ってみれば 私は私の人生を歩んでこなかった という淋しい結論なのである 命が絶える時にのぞんで 私の人生は何だったのだろうか と心中で叫ぶ さて 一つ一つ私なりに解説してみることにする 1. 自分らしく生きればよかった とはどういう意味だろうか なんとなく分かる気がするが どうもはっきりしない 具体的にはどういうことだろうか 自分らしく とはどういう意味なのだろうか 韓国の例 韓国社会にはそれなりの 社会の枠組み がある 若者は小学 中学 高校 大学と一貫して成績優勝でなければならない 特に一流大学を優秀な成績で卒業して一流企業に就職するのが 社会での成功者 なのである その確率は 700 分の 1. 残りの 699 人は成功者とはみなされないという厳しい社会 だが 一流会社に就職できてもほとんどの人々は 40 代半ばで会社を去らねばならない 若者はこのようにして人生の大半を過ごす 自分で決めた生き方ではなく 社会の枠組み 価値観 に従って生きるのである 自分の望んだ人生ではなく 社会の決めた人生なのである そこには 自分らしさ があるのだろうか いかにも韓国の例が極端に思えるかも知れないが このような人生を私も日本で歩んできたからその虚しさは良くわかる 振り返ってみれば 高校の頃はいつもイライラしていたものだ だが どうしてイライラしていたのか 社会の枠組み を無視して生きる勇気もなく ましてや この人生 どう生きれば良いのか さえ知らなかった 社会の枠組み はちょうど既製服みたいなもので 皆に合うが 誰にもぴったりしない という代物ではないだろうか ( 続く ) 合掌 藤井道栄

4 BWA HAPPENINGS by Lesli Hirokawa We had our Eshinni/Kakushinni Service and Seminar back on September 27 th. Reverend Diana Thompson was our guest speaker. Thank you for all that attended. Lunch was catered in from Maggiano s. On December 6, 2015, we will be holding our General Annual Meeting and Potluck from 11:30-1:30. Stacey s term will be over this year, we will need to elect two copresidents because we never filled in the other copresident position from last year. If you know anyone who would be interested in these positions, please talk with one of the BWA Board members. This will also be a pot luck luncheon. A big THANK YOU to the following: Thomas Knight for teaching two classes on how to make sushi back in April. It sounded like it was a lot of fun! Mrs. Ajisaka, Mrs. Junko Kimura, Mrs. Gayle Goto and our models for showing us how to properly put on a kimono and tie an obi. We learned a lot, especially on how to fold the kimonos when not in use. Mrs. Fujii, Mrs. Ayako Kimura, Mrs. Taniwaki, and Ms. Kathy Kuge for showing us how to cook Nishime and Chawan-mushi. YUMMY! For all those that came out the morning of August 2 nd to help make onigiri for the Japanese American Association of Colorado. Mrs. Lillian Miyazawa, Mrs. Elaine Tsumura, and all the volunteers that helped make the Crane Quilt for the Temple s 100 th year Anniversary! It looks GORGEOUS! All your hard work is very much appreciated! Namo Amida Butsu Karaoke Attention all Karaoke and music lovers. Look for information on the start up of a TSDBT Karaoke Club at the Temple in the weeks ahead. This TSDBT affiliated organization is meant to be for young and old, and a chance to just plain have fun, and to learn new songs, including some Japanese songs. Interested? As the weather gets colder, the YBA continues to stay busy around the temple, planning and saving as much as possible for next summer s Sunshine Trip! Obviously this takes great organization from solid leadership, and this year s officers are certainly up to the task! Lupton service 10 am Interfaith Thanksgiving service FRI Nov am Hoji service SUN Nov 29 NO services Shotsuki Monthly Memorial Service Every 4 th Sunday of each month (when possible) The Shotsuki Service is a general memorial service held on a monthly basis for members and friends of the temple who have passed away during the month of service. For instance, if a member passes away in March (of any year), then his/her passing would be observed by surviving Sangha family and friends every succeeding March. Although there are major memorial (hoji) services set at specific time intervals such as 49 th Day, 1 st Year, 3 rd Year, 7 th, 13 th, 17 th, 25 th, 33 rd and 50 th years, the temple will now also provide families with monthly memorial (shotsuki) services; these will be held in conjunction with regularly scheduled Sunday services. At each Shotsuki service, family members will have the opportunity to pay respect and gratitude to loved ones who have passed away in that particular month. Donation by affected family members: $50/observance. We will cover topics such as Amida Buddha and the Pure Land, basic temple etiquette, onaijin objects and other concepts related to Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.
