Ohigan Autumnal Equinox Volume XXXIII A TSDBT Monthly Publication September 2013 Formula in Buddhism The 17 th Vow: Part-3 Issue eight You see the formula as below. These are essential elements in learning the Teachings of Buddha: 1. To Learn Buddhism is to learn myself, 2. to learn myself is to learn Buddha s Compassion. 3. to learn Compassion is to forget myself, 4. and to forget myself is to throw me into Buddha s World. The 17th Vow Please recall that each Vow appears to clarify what I am. The 17 th Vow goes as below: If, after my obtaining Buddhahood, all the immeasurable Buddhas of the 10 quarters do not glorify and recite my name, may I not achieve the Highest Enlightenment. Why is this Vow one of the 5 true vows? The translation of recite my name in the vow does not clearly show one more meaning. The word recite as used here, has the same meaning of evenly balanced or wellmatched. In other words, my recitation is well-matched and evenly balanced with Amida s Working. That s why the Name is so-called Buddha s Practice or Great Practice. In short, the recitation of the Name = what Amida did for us. Then, how can we know and experience the Name as Buddha s Practice? The Name and Nembutsu The Name is Namo-Amida-Butsu; Nembutsu is recitation of the Name. What is the difference between the two? The Name is just a meal before you eat; the recitation of the Name or Nembutsu, is the meal you already ate. The meal you ate liberates you from hunger because it fills your stomach and becomes your energy, blood, muscles, and so on. So the meal you ate is equal to the virtues that the food possesses. Buddhas in the 10 quarters guarantee its greatness of the practice: Recitation of the Name. How can we experience Amida by and through the recitation? Again, there are many practices to attain Enlightenment. For example, the practice of sharing is the practice that targets greed. The practice of keeping precepts aims at selfishness. The practice of efforts aims at laziness. Each practice has its own target to conquer. However, if a person possesses greed, anger, laziness, etc. all at once, there is no practice which can cover every target area except the Name. That is why Buddha- Nature appears in the form of the Name as the practice to cover any kind of people. Then, how can we experience the Working? Is it good enough to recite the Name? It sounds like blind faith. It does not make sense because the teaching is supposed to clarify myself clearly. What is the true meaning of the Name and the recitation of the Name? In Gassho, Rev. Doei Fujii September 2013 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Page 1

(303) FAX (303) dinouye@tsdbt.org Newsletter articles are due by the 10th of each month for publication in the next month s issue. For additional information, or to read the newsletter online, go to our website at Monthly Salutations from Diana Sensei Hello everyone and welcome to September! I don t know where the summer went but I hope that everyone enjoyed it. This month we are observing the Fall Ohigan. Ohigan literally means other shore and is a time, both in the Spring and the Fall, when Buddhists are encouraged to take time to reflect on the other shore of enlightenment through study of the Dharma or teachings of the Buddha. In Jodo Shinshu the other shore is Amida Buddha s Pure Land, the land of pure nirvana, which is said to be located in the West. Coincidentally, the 1 st of September is recognized as the Buddhist Churches of America s Founding Day. On this day, we commemorate the arrival of Revs. Shuei Sonoda and Kakuryo Nishijima in San Francisco in 1899, marking the official beginning of Jodo Shinshu teaching in the mainland United States. I say that this is a coincidence because these ministers were dispatched by Nishi Honganji in Kyoto, Japan, from a land in the West, to ensure that the Buddha s teachings would reach those who hadn t yet encountered it and those who desired to continue to learn it. We have been able to gather and learn the teachings of Buddha here in the United States for over 100 years, not only because of the missionaries but also, through the dedication of people too numerous to count who built and sustained the temples and sangha communities. We are able to encounter the Pure Land of Amida when we come to temple and look at the altar space (onaijin), by studying the Pure Land Sutras or the writings of Shinran, and/or by contemplating and reflecting on the lives and actions of all those who have worked so diligently to keep the dharma alive. But even when we feel that we are in a hopeless state wherein we can t or won t encounter the Pure Land directly, we can still say Namo Amida Butsu in gratitude, knowing that the great wisdom and compassion that is Amida Buddha will always be calling to us from that other shore, waiting patiently for our awakening. Namo Amida Butsu

8 The TSDBT 100 Year Celebration will be held in 2016; we became established as Denver Buddhist Church on March 13, Since our beginnings, we have inevitably lived and experienced the primary maxim of Buddhism everything is change (the History Project wishes to document those changes). The TSDBT 100 Year Celebration Planning Committee has already kicked into gear as a big event requires big planning. Committee Chairs Ann Murphy and Richard Yoshida hope to keep the Sangha informed and engaged every step of the way. To that end, they are using this month s newsletter edition to solicit additional committee members and Sangha member stories. Please read the next two pages to keep informed and respond as best you can: In 2016, we wish to acknowledge the past 100 years with gratitude and compassion; we wish to (re)affirm our continuing journey, using the Dharma as our guide. History Project Status for the 100 Year TSDBT Celebration We have been extremely busy conducting planning meetings, talking to and contacting members, and initiating several stories for the History Project. We hope that you, will come forward with your individual stories to be included in our planned history book. This is your chance to capture, in writing, a memory that is dear to you in the history and future of our Temple. In addition to personal and/or family stories, please consider writing a historical piece along the lines of (but not limited to): How the DBAC was formed and how it has contributed to our community; How the Taiko Club started, has shaped your lives and what it means to you; Memories of the YBA Sunshine trips, Dharma School, AkiMatsuri, etc. The Ministerial Assistance Program by Richard Yoshida How/When/Where the Alamosa, Brighton, Ft. Lupton, Greeley, La Jara, Longmont, Sedgwick, Scottsbluff Temples were founded/built/remain, etc. Etc. Provided below is an excerpt from an early submission - Memories of 1942 Market Street. (This story will be published in its entirety in the final history book slated for release in 2016.) We offer this preview as an example of writings we hope to receive from fellow Temple Members everywhere. If you have ideas but don t like to write, please tell your story to someone who may be able to help, or submit the ideas in note form to the committee. Please submit your written work by to 100Stories@tsdbt.org or to any of the History committee members (SEE: page 9). Memories of 1942 Market Street by R. Yoshida In 1919, the Denver Buddhist Church was seeking a home; as a fledgling organization, finances were scarce despite a national economy of relative prosperity. In 1919, Mattie Silk s House of Mirrors, a building located at 1942 Market Street in Denver, was vacant, rundown and considered to be in the skid row section of town (just a few decades earlier, the building operated as an upper class, fine dining restaurant and viewing room on the main floor with rooms of prostitution occupying the second floor). In 1919, Cause and Conditions joined these two entities an impoverished Sangha and an uninhabited building and the resulting Denver Buddhist Church would reside there for the next 28 years. This particular story is really not about the purchase of the temple building or of those beginning years. But you need to know and appreciate those modest beginnings to know and appreciate the significance of this story, which begins in In 1933, Reverend Yoshitaka Tamai was beginning his third year (in a 54-year span) of service at the Denver Buddhist Church (we became Tri-State Buddhist Church in 1947, Tri-State Buddhist Temple in 1981 and, finally, Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple in 2002). As part of his practice, Rev. Tamai travelled extensively throughout the Tri-State (Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska) area counseling/ continued on page 9 Page 8 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples September 2013

9 1942 Market St. continued from page 8 teaching Buddhist youth who he hoped would develop into future Temple leaders. To that end, he recruited 14 young men from rural farming areas to move to the big city, Denver, so they could study and graduate from an accredited high school (for college entry) or attend a college/university in the Denver area. The second floor rooms of the temple served well as a dormitory. Rev. Tamai solicited food donations from Temple members, especially fresh produce from local farmer members, and chaperoned this group of young men; they attended Manual High School and, additionally, were required to learn Kendo (a Japanese martial art using bamboo swords), Japanese language and cultural arts. Rev. Tamai led them daily in Sutra chanting. Each student had household chores such as cleaning, laundry, and cooking meals. The original 14 participants were: Hiroshi Aigaki; San Acacio, CO Sam Norio Chikuma; Brighton, CO Nobuo Furuiye; Longmont, CO Ugi Harada; Arkansas Valley, CO Roy Inouye; La Jara, CO Jim Kanemoto; Longmont, CO Mr. Kanetomo; Rocky Ford/Swink, CO Sunao Kawanabe; La Jara, CO Shogo Kuroda; Kemmerer, WY Tadakasu Kuromiya; Arkansas Valley, CO Takashi Mayeda; Longmont, CO George Ogura; San Acacio, CO Nobuzane Tsumura;Wakayama-ken, Japan Henry Uyeda; San Acacio, CO This concludes this article excerpt; the remaining story will be published in the History Project book. I hope some or all of these words have evoked a memory within you that must be shared and written down in the History Project book. Submit your story today.
