(Vow #2) Words: The man and devas: Before they were born into Amida s World, we see differences in quality and ability. Thus, the portion of the man and devas tells that ordinal men and super beings in this world are equally born into Amida. Devas is a group of people who have better or super abilities than common human beings such as Yoga masters in India or an immortal being living in deep mountains. Three Evil Worlds are the worlds resulted from anger, greed, and grumbling mind. Anger, greed, and grumbling mind are so called Three poisons which damage one and others. Three poisons, just like the three primary colors which can create countless colors in their combinations, are considered as causes to create the Three Evil Worlds. At the end of their lives: At the very moment we die, it is the moment we receive every result of our past karmas. We can just exist here and now, but the present moment, knowingly or unknowingly, represents all happenings and their results of the past. Thus, the moment I die is the moment I receive everything in the past. I read an interesting poem the other day: I repeat something foolish over and over again, but why.. This short poem reminded me the Vow #2. The vow could read as follows: As long as I am alive, I am the very being who endlessly repeats anger, greed, and grumbling in this world until the very end of my life. I do repeat them and this is me! This Month s Buddhist Holiday... Ohigan Autumnal Equinox Before I encountered Wisdom and Compassion, I got angry many times: After my encountering I still get angry. What is the difference before and after my encountering? Before my encountering I did not know why I got angry: After it I came to know clearly why I get angry. This is the difference. I am able to see my own dark side clearly because I am in the bright Light (Wisdom). This is the way we, Jodo-Shin-Shu followers, experience Wisdom in everyday life. In Zen Buddhism it is said, A person who knows his/her possession of blind passions is not a human being any more. The person is more than an ordinal being: A bodhisattva. In Jodo-Shin-Shu tradition, it is said, A person who knows his/her possession of blind passions are just foolish beings. Zen and Jodo-Shin-Shu are simply talking about the same person in different ways. In Gassho, Rev. E. D. Fujii September 2011 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Page 1

2 A Word From the Temple Office Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples 1947 Lawrence Street Denver CO by Donna Inouye Welcome back, Everyone. Even though we held Sunday services through July and August, the transition from Summer vacation time to Fall school days is always exciting and filled with possibilities. And resuming Dharma School classes provides new beginnings for many. Speaking of new beginnings... Recently, I received one of those bulk s intended to be a humorous list of traits commonly shared by women undergoing menopause it was entitled, 10 Ways to Know If You Have Estrogen Issues. I settled in to read it for my daily dose of smiles. Never did I imagine I would recognize myself in the list... and, more horrifying, it was the cranky, old woman symptoms that seemed to identify me best. Against common, good sense but, because I am up against a newsletter deadline, I thought I would share the four points (out of 10) of recognition: 1. Everyone around you has an attitude problem. 7. Everyone seems to have just landed here from outer space. 9. You re sure that everyone is scheming to drive you crazy. 10. The Ibuprofen bottle is empty and you bought it yesterday. Amusingly enough, as I experienced each of these symptoms prior to receiving the article, I felt my bad attitude was indicative of a very hot Summer. I truly believed the ongoing heat was making others unreasonable and, quite frankly, weird. I fought with myself to remain cool, rational and normal. Who knew that hot flashes experienced in sweltering summer weather are not intensely felt by all? Anyway, here s wishing Everyone a joyous 2011/2012 Dharma School year! (303) FAX (303) dinouye@tsdbt.org For newsletter contributions, submit your article by the 10th of each month for publication in the next month s issue. For additional information, or to read the newsletter online, go to our website at Arigato Gozaimasu!! Thank you to the following people who made certain last month s newsletter got mailed: Ed Nakagawa, Herb & Dorothy Inouye, Sharon Inouye and Steve Koga. Thank you to Kent Yamasaki who was attending a family Hoji service when the Temple s fire alarm system went haywire. Kent was key in getting the alarms silenced and assuring everyone s safety. [The system was damaged by a nearby lightening strike follow up measures to have the system repaired have proven to be just about as arduous and frustrating as the initial haywire havoc. Thank you to Building Maintenance Manager, Wayne Berve, for sticking with it.] Thank you to Calvin Kato who stopped by one morning before the heat of the day struck, to weed the front courtyard. Thank you to Glen and Michelle Asakawa who squeezed time into their family Hawaii vacation to write an article and submit photos explaining our 2011 Cherry Blossom Festival in the August 2011 issue of Asian Avenue Magazine. Thank you to Steve Koga and Wayne & Eric Berve for repairing and re-hanging one of the upstairs office doors. Thank you to Steve and Wayne for installing the KnoxBox above the gate (which gives the Fire Department access to the temple in the event of an after hours emergency). Thank you, Steve, for unloading the 200-lb bulletin board from the delivery truck. Thank you, Rev. Fujii, for experimentally scheduling Sunday services during our traditional Summer hiatus. Thank you to Minister Assistants Merrily Stewart, Frank Miyazawa and Shieko Uno for supporting and aiding Fujii Sensei s efforts, so that all Sangha members have continuous access to Buddhist teachings and services. Thank you Lorraine Hisamoto, Robin Burchardt, JoAnn Adair, Michiko Fujii, Frank Miyazawa and all who clean up for making certain we have coffee, tea and goodies for social time following each Sunday service. 3 Planning for the Future submitted by Charles Ozaki Anyone who has visited downtown Denver over the last 20 or 30 years has seen tremendous change from the construction of Coors Field and several elegant hotels to the gentrification of old warehouse districts. With the Denver City Council s approval in June of a redevelopment plan for Arapahoe Square, the renovation trend is almost literally at the doorstep of the Denver Buddhist Temple. And while we are excited for our neighbors to realize their vision, that decision further underscores the need to make sure our property isn t left behind as an island of outdated structures and facilities amid an ocean of progress. That is why we have formed a Joint Strategic Planning Committee to evaluate different alternatives for redeveloping and revitalizing the Temple and the rest of Sakura Square. The committee consists of members of the boards of the Tri-State Buddhist Church Apartments (which represents both Tamai Tower and the retail components of Sakura Square) and the Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple. The committee s formal mission is to, Define the most feasible strategic plan for the assets of the Tamai Tower and Sakura Square to financially sustain the Denver Buddhist Temple for the long term. To date, we have retained a consulting team of real estate, architectural, construction and communications experts to help navigate the evaluation process and produce a final recommendation for moving forward. The team will examine four primary alternatives: two that would retain ownership of all components of Sakura Square including the Denver Buddhist Temple, Tamai Tower and retail spaces and two that would involve selling all or some portion of the block bounded by 19th, 20 th, Larimer and Lawrence streets. While this is a truly open-minded effort with no predetermined outcome, the committee would prefer to exhaust all options for remaining on the current site before considering any scenarios involving a sale of property or relocation of the Denver Buddhist Temple. Again, the primary goal of this process is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the temple which, like downtown Denver a few decades ago, is in dire need of modernization. We are in the early stages of this process and, as such, it would be inappropriate to speculate on what the final recommendations will be. However, we understand that there are many groups who have a stake in the future of Sakura Square including the Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple Sangha, Tamai Tower residents, our retail partners, the local Japanese and Asian communities, our downtown neighbors and others who utilize, patronize and value the various components of Sakura Square. Input from all these stakeholders will be critical to our work. While we may not be able to answer all of your questions right now, please be assured that we will be sharing information regularly and creating various channels through which you can provide your feedback, express concerns and ask questions. For more information, please don t hesitate to reach out to me or to our committee co-presidents, Greg Ramos and Wayne Berve, using the contact information below. We thank you for your thoughtful comments and ideas. (contact information immediately following) September 2011 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Page 3

4 Tri-State Buddhist Church Apartments and Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple Joint Strategic Planning Committee Charles Ozaki, Chair (303) Greg Ramos, TSDBT Co-President & Strategic Planning Committee member (303) Wayne Berve, TSDBT Co-President & Strategic Planning Committee member Architectural Programming As a part of the Sakura Square Strategic Planning process, the future needs of the Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple must be addressed. During the month of September, all of the TS/DBT Organizations and Affiliate Organizations will be receiving a Programming Questionaire asking about what kind of space your organizations needs. In late September and early October the architectural programming team of Ron Abo, Kelly Yamisaki, and Kevin Yoshida, (all professional architects) will be contacting the heads of the organizations for one-on-one interviews to go over the questionnaires. In late October there will be a workshop where all the representatives of organizations and other interested parties can come to discuss the results of the findings and provide input into the final program document. CENTENNIAL COMMITTEE UPDATE The Temple s new gate and fence were projects that originated in 2010 when the Centennial Endowment Committee began a fundraiser specifically targeting the repair and/or replacement of our Temple face. 5 Dharma School Pages Valuable Information and News from Your Dharma School Superintendent Dennis Flodeen (720) This is Dennis Flodeen, Dharma School Superintendent. Consider this his before photo introduction; he is warmly smiling his welcome to all Dharma School families. He s a great guy, so we re thinking his end-of-the-year photo will bear the same cheerful smile. YBA Blurb Every four years, the Tri-State Denver Buddhist Temple s Young Buddhist Association takes a two-week bus excursion called Sunshine Trip to visit the many Buddhist temples on the West Coast. The Sunshine Trip allows our YBA to become acquainted with other American Jodo Shinshu Buddhist temples and to create lasting friendships with young Buddhists across the nation. The YBA would like to remind the Sangha that next summer (2012), many of the DBT s young Buddhists will be taking part in the Sunshine Trip. In preparation for the trip, the YBA will be hosting an informational meeting for interested parents and students of the YBA on September 25 th at 10:30 a.m. in the YBA room. We would also like to encourage any high school students interested in participating in the Sunshine Trip to attend YBA classes every Sunday. As always, the YBA would like to thank the Sangha for its continued support. Without you, the Sunshine Trip would never be possible. To our fellow Sangha members and our Dharma School students, welcome back! We hope you are ready for another exciting year! It s always good to see your friends again and make new friends, too. Your Dharma School teachers are looking forward to seeing you, and we re planning a fun year for you all. We ll see you on September 11 th! We expect 100 % registration of all students who attend classes. In fact, the first three classes to have every student fully registered will win a class party of either pizza or ice cream (their choice). Registration forms will be handed out to teachers, and we ll have more at the table during bake sales. If you are a temple member, and if you ve ever been interested in helping with the Dharma School, please talk to one of us at the Dharma School table during bake sale. We may need a teacher or two, and we can always use substitute teachers. We greatly appreciate and rely on your support with our many activities throughout the year. On behalf of the Dharma School, accept this as our first of many thanks for bringing your children to Dharma School and for your time and assistance and financial support. 6 First of all, many thanks to those volunteers who washed, cooked and made eight rice cookers of rice into that s right, eight hundred onigiri for the Japanese Community Picnic! A special arigato gozaimashita goes to Mrs. Hisae Taniwaki for coming to the temple at 7 A.M. Sunday morning to start the rice cookers. Also, we wish to express gratitude for a generous donation of fabrics and sewing notions, yarns, etc.! We will try to put these items to good use. If anyone has suggestions for craft items that BWA members can make for fundraising or charity, please contact a BWA member! And, although she felt it best for her to resign as the President of BWA, we would like to express thanks to June Inuzuka for her work to organize notebooks for the officers and the Kakushnini - BWA/FUJINKAI - THANK YOU & WELCOME BACK by Kim Morehouse, Recording Secretary Eshinni seminar during In her shortened the term! Dharma or himself (yes, a couple of he s attended) and then he wrote on a chalkboard in Kanji and went over the meaning of each person s name!! In this way, he hoped to become more familiar with his Sangha. It was really great to hear each person introduce her or himself and say a little something. Imagine, having come to Temple for so many years and then actually, standing up and introducing yourself! It was especially fun for me to witness this wonderful validation of each person. Then, Reverend Fujii did the same! What was so special, was his sharing of how he came to be a reverend in the first place. It seems like reverends do not really set out to be one, but circumstances just kind of happen. I think it must be something about their karma? (I remember Rev. Kanya explaining something like he was only going to be a Reverend for a short time and then discovered it was not so bad after all). Anyway, Rev. Fujii talked about how his corporate success really did not bring him happiness, but rather, as a matter of fact, was resulting in somewhat of a downward unhappy spiral for him. So, then began his journey to studying philosophy looking for an answer to that question what is happiness? which eventually led him to where he is now, a much happier person, indeed. I think I can safely say that we, his new Sangha are grateful and happy as well that he and his wife, Michiko have been led to our Temple! Thank you, Rev Fujii, for sharing! (I hope I have related your thoughts, Rev. Fujii, with some accuracy - please make corrections or clarification during Dharma talks.) So much for catch-up. Now we look forward to hearing from Merrily Stewart and Gail Ida about our two BWA exchange students from Japan. Surely there will be much to tell about their stay from August 9 to August 18! Joyce Nakata-Kim will be representing us at the FBWA conference in October. Also of note is a reminder to ourselves to think about volunteering or thinking of anyone to nominate as president of BWA. Thank you Kathy Kuge for holding down the fort in the mean time!. Last but certainly not least, a special very belated thank you to Reverend Fujii for being our speaker at this year s Kakushinni - Eshinni seminar last April! Of course we had one of our famous pot luck gochiso lunches, but the highlight of the seminar was when our then new, Reverend Fujii gave his talk. It was not really a talk, but more of a let s get acquainted activity. He had each and everyone of those Cherry Blossom Festival Dancers people-watch attending, introduce her while awaiting their turn on stage. Page 6 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples September 2011
