Gotan E Shinran Shonin s Birthday Hatsumairi Infant Introduction Formula in Buddhism The 18 Vow: #5; King of Vows You see the formula as below. These are essential items in the formula when we learn the Teaching of Buddha. They go as follows: 1. To Learn Buddhism is to learn myself, 2. to learn myself is to learn Buddha s Compassion. 3. to learn Compassion is to forget myself, 4. and to forget myself is to throw me into Buddha s World. The 18 th Vow If, when I attain Buddhahood, the sentient beings of the 10 quarters who, with sincere and entrusting heart, aspire to be born in my land and say my name even 10 times, should not be born there, may I not attain the perfect enlightenment. Excluded are those who commit the five grave offenses and those who slander the right Dharma. Words: 1. Sentient being of the 10 quarters: Sentient being = you and me 2. Sincere heart: The heart generated by Wisdom of Buddha. 3. Entrusting heart: The heart generated by Compassion of Buddha. 4. Aspire to be born in my land: The future direction of my life. 5. Even 10 times: As long as my life lasts, even if very short, recitation is essential. 6. Five grave offenses: Those who commit offenses such as (1) murder father, (2) murder mother, (3) murder Bodhisattvas, (4) murder Buddha, (5) destroy harmony in sangha. 7. Slander the right Dharma: False spoken statements related to Mahayana Teaching. Five grave offenses & slanderer Why do we see these at the end of the vow? The reasons are as follows: - A person s thoughts are rooted in his own desires and blind passions. The person is depending on a false foundation in life. - A person s thoughts are simply his own thoughts and ideas. So the person does not recognize his twisted and distorted views. - A person doesn t care morals and ethics. - Since the contents of this vow are different from Theravada Buddhism which is omainly for priests and ministers, Buddha emphasizes the importance of Compassion in Mahayana Buddhism which embraces any kind of quality of beings. - Buddha wants us to find the right direction in life and to build a right foundation in life. Thus, these don ts are to guide people to build the right foundation. Specifically, right foundation means right view (causation, cause-condition) and essence of Mahayana Buddhism (Wisdom as cause, Compassion as condition). In Gassho, ev. 2 Monthly Salutations from ev. Diana Thompson The one who hears and never forgets the Dharma, Sees and reveres it and greatly rejoices in attaining it That person is my true friend; Therefore, awaken aspiration for enlightenment. Hello everyone, welcome to May! This month we are celebrating Gotan-e or the birthday of our founder, Shinran Shonin. Obviously, this is an important day for Jodo Shinshu Buddhists because it is a day for us to reflect on Shinran s life and teachings which consist of a) awakening to one s own foolish self and b) gratitude to all past causes and conditions that have helped us to come to that awakening. The quote above is taken from the Larger Sutra and makes reference to my true friend, a term denoting a person of shinjin (sincere heart and mind) who will help to guide us to our own awakening. It also expresses a strong sense of gratitude to the person or persons through whom one has been able to encounter and awaken to the teaching. Shinran wrote many hymns of gratitude to all those whom he considered to be his true friends - everyone from the Buddha to the great sages of the past and his own personal teacher, Honen Shonin. Through study of the sutras and the works of the sages, Shinran encountered the Buddha and Dharma academically but he eventually hit a wall. This was his encounter with his small, foolish self. Feeling that his study alone was not sufficient to encounter the Buddha with sincere heart and mind, he sought out Honen and through him, found the heart/mind connection with the Buddha that he had been seeking. Honen encouraged the recitation of Namo Amida Butsu as the true means Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple 1947 Lawrence St. Denver, CO E: Gotan E Service for ordinary people to encounter the Buddha and Shinran found that for himself, this was correct. The numerous hymns that he wrote over the course of his lifetime were his own expressions of gratitude that came from his heart/mind meeting with the Buddha. He realized that the Buddhas, sages and great teachers were among the true friends that he had encountered and all were responsible in some way for his awakening. This month as we celebrate Gotan-e, we can consider all of those true friends that have brought us to encounter the teachings (with Shinran counted among that number) and respond in gratitude with Namo Amida Butsu. In Gassho. Arigato Gozaimasu Thank you to the following people who gathered to help mail out the March/April temple newsletter issue: Joyce Mizunaga, Shirley Tsuchimoto, Dora Shibata, Kay Takahashi, Michiko Aoki, ichard Yoshida, Herb & Dot Inouye and ev. Diana Thompson. Although this issue comes out in the delightful warming of Spring, I need to take us back to early March and thank Cal Kato and Gary Matsuda for shoveling snow and deicing the front walks and courtyard. Thank you to everyone and especially the ministers for taking on extra tasks while office worker, Donna Inouye, enjoyed a journey to Japan to meet her new grandson. Look for posters at the temple or check out the temple website in a few weeks. Due to a change in the cartridges recycling program, the Dharma School will no longer be participating in the program. We will recycle what we do have already at the temple, but please don t bring any more used cartridge in. We thank everyone who brought ink cartridges in over the past years! Be a Dharma School Teacher! It s not too early to give thought to becoming a Dharma School teacher for fall 2014-spring (And current teachers, will you be returning next year? We certainly hope so!) Our Dharma School gives kids age 2 to 18 (or thereabouts) a foundation in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism and guidance and support that they ll refer to throughout their lives. Younger students learn through stories, crafts, and games while classes for older kids may incorporate Socratic discussion, current events, and community outreach. Classes are held most Sundays from September through May downstairs in the temple. Our needs for Dharma School change from year to year, but we always need substitute teachers and welcome help with class projects and Dharma School event. If you think you d like to commit to the full school year, please talk to Michelle Asakawa or Naomi Nguyen, the current superintendents. As you should know by previous newsletters, we are recording stories and historical facts of families supplemented by a story-line and connected with your Temple. If you do not submit something, a great opportunity for a family record will be lost. It s important, and it s easy - just put down some high level biological sketch of your collective family including when the family got started in Colorado and then add how your family and you became involved with the Temple. Include experiences and memories and what it has meant to you, and perhaps your hopes for the future. In this way, your grandkids (if applicable) etc. will have something to point to in the future. You should be able to write an account in a day or so. We d like to give you this chance to record your short story in a book or, alternatively, in a digital format accessible to you. Include pictures with your short story. The established due date for your input is May 15, to 100stories@tsdbt.org. If you have difficulty writing, just put your thoughts down and send them to ichard Yoshida at 8793 Forrest Drive, Highlands anch, Colorado We will get a storywriter to help you put your story together. If you prefer, a short I remember account can also be submitted as an alternative. Let s go! Time is running out. 5 A BIG THANK YOU - an expression of gratitude On behalf of the TS/DBT Board, Joni and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you who came out with your cleaning supplies on Clean-up Sunday to help get our Temple into shipshape. With everyone s help and hard work, we were able to accomplish a lot. We were able to clean, reorganize, and purge years of unused items! Many of those things got recycled and donated for reuse. A special shout out of thanks should go to Gary Matsuda, our new facilities manager, and his helper, Joe, for performing the heavy lifting and the carting out of the recyclables. Thank you to DBT Aikido, DBT Judo, and Denver Taiko for bringing out all of the items out of the back apartment, weeks ahead of the cleanup, so that it could be sorted and relocated in preparation for our new nokotsudo (columbarium). And a very special thanks to Jon Campbell, Amy Yoshimura, and our YBA for their willingness to always be there to help with the grunt work whenever we ask. So to all of you, our Sangha, thank you for all of your hard work! If you have not been in the Temple kitchen lately, please stop and check out our new gas range and convection oven. It was a very generous gift to our Temple from the BWA and Dharma School. The Hatsumairi Ceremony On May 18, 2014, Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple is holding an INFANT PESENTATION CEEMONY (HATSUMAII). At this ceremony, infants are formally presented to the Buddha and the Sangha; the parents of each infant make a solemn vow to help guide their child in his/her spiritual growth. A Buddhist name is NOT given at this ceremony. This ceremony is for those infants whose parents want to set a basic foundation in which to cultivate the Teachings of the Buddha. The Infant Presentation Ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Denver Buddhist Temple Gotan E Service (birthday of Shinran Shonin). Please register by calling the temple office by Sunday, May 4, 2014 (all applicants must pre-register). Non-temple members, please pay a $20 registration fee. There is no registration fee for temple members, however, this occasion provides a wonderful opportunity to make a donation to the Eitaikyo Fund. by Gail Ida kitchen is probably one of the most used areas of our Temple just second to the Hondo. How many bake sales, Keiro Kais, manjus, Sakura Matsuri food and prep, and food fundraisers have been made in this kitchen? So many that we couldn t even begin to count. But with this very special donation by our BWA and Dharma School, all of our jobs will be made easier with the upgrade of the appliances. Thank you BWA and Dharma School! With Gratitude, Joni and Gail eminder equest for Your Videos and Movies from 100 Year Celebration Planning Committee In the March/April 2014 Newsletter, we made a plea for videos/movies/clips that you may have to help us produce a new video highlighting historic milestones and other events related to the Tri-State Buddhist Temple. We d like to include your entries. This is a second request urging you to get down into your basements or other places you may have stored these precious moments. This project will take some extra effort on your part to find what we need. We know that most people tend to put things off, or subconsciously say that searching is too much trouble. Please, we want you to take that extra effort to dig out these videos and movies. They are surely out there waiting to be rediscovered. Any format will be accepted: Super 8, 8 mm, VHS, camcorder, digital camera recordings, ipad and SmartPhone recordings, etc. We will return your originals. Examples for your movies and videos include: picnics, bon-odoris, Sakura Matsuri, parades, dances, Sunshine Trips, Hanamatsuri programs, Boy/Girl Scouts, bowling, golf, baseball, plays (shibais), groundbreaking, Cherry Blossom plantings, weddings, choir, reunions, or other family events that may have occurred at the Temple, etc. Past and current events are welcomed. Again, please take an extra effort to help and spread the word. Provide your entry to Shannon Umetani at shannonumetani@gmail.com or contact at her at , or contact ichard Yoshida at or May 2014 Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temples Page 5 Call Donna at O at dinouye@tsdbt.org
