Page Two Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time VIVA SANTIAGO! A Reflection on the Feast of St. James (July 25) in the 16th Century costumes strolled the plaza. Their songs were about love and faith. Wearing religious medallions and ribbon-trophies of past amours, ensembles of students provided a light-hearted welcome to pilgrims. It was 1986 and yet it could have been 1586! Climbing the steps of the shrine, I was no longer a tourist de luxe. I joined the throng of pilgrims who had prayed every step of their long journey, braved the elements, and now were at the threshold of a great religious experience. We were together in faith. The one we had traveled far to honor was James, son of Zebedee, brother of John the Evangelist, nicknamed Son of Thunder. Shrine of Santiago de Compostela Sanitiago de Compostela in Northwestern Spain is one of the great shrines of Christendom. Popularly believed to be the burial site of St. James the Greater, it was, after Jerusalem and Rome, the chief destination of pilgrims throughout the Middle Ages. Once as many as 100,000 pilgrims from all parts of Europe visited the shrine every year. These pilgrims would wear the characteristic cockerel shell emblem and carry a walking staff along one of the four holy routes. There were no amenities along the way. Even so, there was charity and hospitality. Refugios ( Refugees ) were humble inns provided by parishes and lay associations for the pious journeying to Compostela. Cockerel shell emblem When I visited the Shrine of Santiago de Compostela, the dollar was strong, and the spirit adjustable. We didn t walk to Compostela, we drove. We didn t unroll our sleeping bags at a Refugio, we were regaled and palatially pampered in the five star grandeur of the Hotel De Los Reyes Catholicos. I can t say I felt extraordinary guilt. Our hotel was steps away from the spectacular approach to the shrine. At sunset, I watched rose-colored clouds ascend and settle above the high bell towers of Santiago! Student troubadours Saint James - Santiago in Spanish - was a fisherman. When called, he and his brother were mending their nets. They dropped their nets and left their father. James and John wasted no time. They were special even among the Twelve. James was privileged. He witnessed the Transfiguration and the raising of the daughter of Jairus from the dead. He was with the Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane. James and John had a mother who boldly promoted her sons in the presence of the Lord. Their ambition showed through, and was certainly behind the maneuver. The brothers, James and John, earned the title Sons of Thunder when their anger at the unresponsive Samaritans prompted them to ask Jesus to send down fire upon them (Luke 9: 54-56). A popular legend tells of a missionary journey of St. James to Spain. After his return to Jerusalem, he had the distinction of being the first Apostle to be martyred during the persecution of King Herod Agrippa (42-44 A.D.). The legendary transfer of the remains of St. James to Spain, their discovery by a shepherd, and the building of the great shrine are only part of the mystique of Santiago. Cross of St. James

Page Three Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Perhaps the most unusual story surrounding the shrine is the belief that, during the battle with the Moors, St. James himself appeared on a white charger to lead the Christian army to victory. Near the high altar you can see the statue of the Holy Caballero wielding a sword, and slaying a Moor. Ever after in Spain, he is not the Son of Thunder so much as Matamor - the Killer of Moors. Matamor The entrance to the great pilgrim church of Santiago is called the Porta del Gloria. This elaborately carved Romanesque doorway bears witness to centuries of faithful pilgrims. There is a place worn by the touch of pilgrims. They have literally left their mark! The massive church building resounded with muffled voices and shuffling pilgrim feet. The high altar lay under a heavily baroqued baldachino. An elegant gold and silver image of the saint (without horse and sword) was venerated by the touch of pilgrims passing behind the altar. Below was the tomb itself, where I concelebrated Mass - half pilgrim, half tourist - in alb and Reeboks! My memories of Santiago de Compostela are vivid. I think I have always been most at home as a pilgrim. As a pilgrim, I have learned much about diversity within our Catholic unity. What a marvel it is to recognize in our own parish the same signs of Catholic unity and cultural diversity! On July 25, the Feast of St. James, I will especially remember in my prayers our Hispanic parishioners. Like other ethnic groups, they reveal how we can be pilgrims to each other s customs and traditions. We are many, yet we are one! Being Catholic makes us citizens of the world and builders of God s kingdom. - Fr. Luczak ( Originally printed in 2006 ) FROM THE PASTOR EPILOGUE TO A CONCERT For those who attended the fourth annual Buddy Charles Gries Memorial Concert on July 15, there were many great moments! The highly talented performers -- friends of Buddy Charles and his wife, Pat -- shared a kaleidoscope of Broadway melodies. Some were sentimental, some inspirational, some very funny. The Holy Family Room was dimly lit. At times, the mood was reminiscent of Acorn on Oak, Le Coque D Or, or Chambers where Buddy Charles entertained with his unique blend of musical virtuosity and humor. He had a magic that money can t buy! The concert reflected that magic! One of the reasons is that Buddy Charles Gries FRIENDS have been honoring his memory by donating their time and talents to this annual parish fundraising event. Buddy was a great entertainer and friend. He was also a committed member of St. Isaac Jogues Parish -- a Religious Education Instructor, a lector at Mass, and leader of the daily rosary! As pastor of St. Isaac Jogues, I have witnessed how good influences grow and how friendship can inspire real generosity! Thanks to the family and friends of Buddy Charles Gries, the proceeds of the concert -- $3,057-- were donated to St. Isaac Jogues. In previous years, the baby grand piano in the Holy Family Room and new microphones for the Church were purchased from concert profits. Once again, this year, the profits will be used for Music Ministry and related liturgical needs. Thank you to Buddy s Friends-- family, performers, and all who attended this year s concert! And, yes, we are already planning a fifth Memorial Concert in honor of Buddy Charles in 2013. -Fr. Luczak

THEIR GIFT OF THE CONCERT GAVE THE PARISH OVER $3000 WHICH WILL GO TO- WARD MAKING IMPROVEMENTS IN THE SOUND SYSTEM IN THE HOLY FAMILY ROOM. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while must have been chosen for this summer season by a committee eager for a vacation. For the apostles, the promise of rest was foiled by the needs of the people who discovered their hideaway and pressed them into ministry. Some people do indeed use their vacation for ministry and mission, giving an intensity of service otherwise not possible. For most of us, vacation is a time when we can grow more aware of God s plan, and can renew the bonds of love with family and friends in times of play and leisure. The disciples learn today that there is no place so out of the way that the life of worship and ministry is disengaged. Giving yourself to summer worship will enrich you, delight you, and give you a sense of the word of God s progress in your heart. In today s world, summer is the time when we are most acutely aware of the beauty of the world. Gratitude and wonder are fertile soils for God s word to take root and prosper. Welcome the visitor today, and resolve that when you travel, you will be faithful to Sunday worship. Returning families are requested to send their registration form in as soon as possible for planning purposes. Families who are new to the program are asked to contact the RE Office, 847/966-1180, to set up a time to pick up or fill out paperwork. A copy of each child s baptismal certificate will be needed (if the child was not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish). RE Classes for Kindergarten are on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Grades 1-Confirmation Year II meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children attend each year as no one year fully covers and forms a child s faith development. Please note that a child must participate in religious education classes, either through an RE Program or a Catholic School, the two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families with older children who have not yet received religious education or sacraments or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call us to discuss available options. Tuition for 2012-2013 for parishioners (those registered in the parish and who use their envelopes and/or give time to the parish through a ministry) is: $160 one child; $270 two children; $330 three or more children. Tuition for non-parishioners (those not registered in the parish, or who are registered but do not use their envelopes or give time) is: $240 one child; $350 two children; $410 three or more children. Sacrament fees are: First Reconciliation/First Communion -- $50; Confirmation Year I -- $10; Confirmation Year II -- $30. Please note that no one is denied religious education because of a difficulty with finances. Things are worked out. All are welcome! Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Six PRAY FOR OUR NATION SPIRITUAL LIFE It was suggested near the end of the Fortnight For Freedom that people continue to gather to pray, in a special way, for our nation until the election in November. While we are waiting to see the response from area parishes, St. Isaac Jogues will offer the opportunity to pray the Patriotic Rosary this Friday, July 27, at 7 p.m. in church. All are welcome and encouraged to invite others to join in this time of prayer. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of prayer, reflection, study and discussion for people who are seeking, or desiring to deepen, a relationship with Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Our busy culture has made Sunday like any other day of the week. It is time to reclaim the Sabbath, a time of restful attention to God and the deeper things of our life. How can Sunday Mass remind me to pause, praise, and find Sabbath renewal? KNOW THE MASS, ONE WORD AT A TIME: QUIET No one ordinarily stands up at Mass and brashly says, Quiet down! The message, however, is right in front of us at Mass. After the proclamation of God s Word we hear The Word of the Lord, and it means Be quiet and take it inside yourself, let it settle within you. Be quiet. After Holy Communion sitting down amounts to the same message, Be quiet and realize the one you have received. It is the Lord. Pay attention. Besides all the music and words that draw us into active participation, the Mass also becomes for us a school of quiet, a place where we learn to quiet ourselves, where we learn to let the deeper things of life and faith settle in, and where we learn to pay attention to God s movement in all of life. Page Eight Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time THE DAYS ARE COMING Separation, isolation, and hostility are terrible things. We are, sadly, too familiar with all of them in our modern life, whether we look at world events or events in our own neighborhoods and families. All three readings today refer to these same sad human conditions. The prophet Jeremiah describes world conditions as if the people of his time were sheep who had been scattered by poor leadership and corrupt shepherds. But the days are coming, he assures us (Jeremiah 23:5), when a new shepherd, a just king, will come. We meet that king in the second reading and the Gospel. Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Ephesians that all divisions can now cease in Christ Jesus, who has brought us together through his blood. In Mark s Gospel we see Jesus himself, looking with pity on those searching for him as if they were sheep without a shepherd. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put people s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
