2 Page 2 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 18, 2016 From the Pastor s Desk No Servant Can Serve Two Masters This is a simple yet profound, eternal truth -- always true in every situation. It is impossible to take orders from two places at the same time, without giving preference to one. But we live in a time in which the term multitasking is quite familiar. Children can watch television, listen to music through their headphones, and do homework. Women are probably much better at it than men, because they so often are doing several things at one time, especially if they have children. We think of computers multitasking by having several programs going at once, but they actually switch back and forth between the programs so fast, we are not aware of it. When we are multitasking things in our lives, can we actually devote 100% of ourselves to any one thing? I don t think so. Can we multitask who we serve as master of our soul? According to the verse above, God says that we cannot. We must either serve Him and Him only, or serve other gods and not Him. This would of course, include flipping back and forth between who or what we serve. Who am I really serving? What dictates my actions? Who has final authority? Will I do what gets me the most money? Or will I do what God says? From this we see that there will be times when God's direction will not be the most financially rewarding choice. Yet far too many who call themselves Christians never even consider choices which would provide them with less money. Money is supposed to be our servant, not our master. Instead of money dictating our decisions, we should tell money what to do. We should use money instead of letting it use us. In the Biblical sense, to serve a master is to be a slave to; to obey and submit to; to yield obedience to. Obviously, God expects our un-compromised allegiance to Him. Ironically, unlike any other master, He will not force it upon us. He expects our absolute devotion to be totally voluntary. He has removed all the barriers. Now, who will we serve? Who is Lord of our life? Who really is our Master? Who do we serve? If we cannot answer those questions with the name Jesus after each question mark, we need to take an inventory of our life, and we need to be honest. Don t cheat. Let us not say that Jesus means everything to us, knowing that we rarely talk to Him or listen to what He has to say. If we don t long for His daily fellowship, how can He be our Master? If we put other things before Him, how can He be our Master? We need to honestly evaluate our relationship, or lack thereof, with Him. Do we serve two masters? According to Jesus, it cannot be done. We are just fooling ourselves and the end result is not something to be desired. Let us choose one Master and serve Him well. In a special way my dear parishioners I thank you for your support & care in making it a wonderful and joyous occasion for me. The extra time and effort you put in were certainly worthwhile. It is a joy for me to work with such dedicated, talented, and all loving people of God. May God bless you all and the parish of St. Isaac Jogues.

We will be signing up for the Mass of Anointing, considering a Morning of Reflection and discussing any ministry issues you have. Please contact Dee or Deacon Paul if you cannot attend. The SPRED Tootsie Roll Sale will be the weekend of October 1 2 after all Masses in the Holy Family Room. A box of 50 long tootsie rolls will be $6 and a Tootsie Roll bank with mini candies will be $2. Plan ahead for Halloween Treats and support this ministry of faith formation and friendship with those who are cognitively challenged. --Liturgy Board Meeting, Tuesday, September 27, 7 p.m., RE Office. --Monthly Bible Talk resumes, Sunday, Oct. 2, 9 a.m., HFR --Blessing of Animals, Sunday, Oct. 2, 1:15 p.m. Field by Rectory 60 TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON If you were at the Installation Mass last Saturday, you heard Bishop Kane congratulate and express his appreciation for the faith, ministry and community that has been shared here at St. Isaac Jogues over the past 60 years. On July 22 nd our parish turned 60 and we have much for which to praise and thank God! We will mark this special time of our community life with an Anniversary Mass on Sunday, November 20 th, at 12 Noon. A 60 th Anniversary Luncheon will be held that same day, November 20 th, at Lone Tree Manor, 7730 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Niles, 1:30-5:00 p.m. Tickets for the luncheon are $30 and there will be a cash bar. We are inviting former Pastors, Associates, Weekend Presiders, and Deacons to join with us. Please spread the word to former parishioners and SIJ School alumni with whom you are in contact. Tickets will be on sale in mid-october. More information soon!

Putherickal Family ALTAR SERVER MINISTRY We invite students in Gr. 4-High School to consider joining the Altar Server Ministry! It is a way to grow in your relationship with Christ, to be involved in a new way with the Mass and to serve God and our parish community! Altar servers have an assignment about twice a month and are scheduled for any of the weekend Masses (Saturday/Sunday), Holy Days of Obligation or other special liturgies. Training will take place 5:30 6:30 p.m. on Monday, October 3, 17, and 24 in church. You will begin your service in November. It is expected that at least one parent or guardian will attend for each child. Home materials and calendars will be distributed. *We are looking for a few people to help as Room Parents during the year. There would be a workshop to attend as part of the Protecting God s Children initiative and some forms to fill out. 6 Page 6 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 18, 2016 BABY BOTTLE PROJECT St. Isaac Jogues Parish will be participating in The Baby Bottle Project benefiting the Women s Centers of Greater Chicagoland. Pick up a baby bottle at the doors of the church next weekend, September 24 25, and fill it with your spare change throughout the month of October. A little change will make a huge difference as this non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material and spiritual support through counseling, clothing, monetary provisions, prayer and other aid. Be part of this simple but crucial fundraising effort.
