2 The Letter to the Hebrews 12:1 reminds us that we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. As we gather for Mass, it is not only the congregation in the pews at St. Theresa that gather, but we are joined by the host of heaven the angels and the saints. Next weekend, two more ordinary human beings a father and mother a husband and wife together are being named to be among the great cloud of witnesses. In Rome on October 18, in the midst of the bishops assembled for the Synod on the Family, the parents of our patroness St. Theresa, Louis and Zélie Martin, will be canonized and become saints of the universal Church. The meaning of this day should not be lost on all of us who live 120 years after their deaths. This holy couple in being canonized becomes a sign for all who are married that married life can indeed lead to sainthood. For the first time in 2,000 years the Church is saying to us that Louis and Zélie, as husband and wife, lived their ordinary family life with heroic virtue. Each throughout their lives shared the common mission of dedicating their lives to God, to one another and to the care of their children. These were working parents, small business owners, active parishioners who knew the joys of family nights, the pain of raising a difficult child and that of losing children. Not pious, plaster saints, Louis and Zélie were imperfect, sometimes arguing even over silly things. Zélie would die of breast cancer and Louis of hardening arteries. Both would die madly in love with each other and God. Next Sunday, we are given intercessors who know the hard work that is marriage and raising children. They know the failure of an unkind word. They know the grace of offering their marriage into God s loving care. We will have this saint couple that we can turn to for the healing of marriages that are breaking, for the trials of parenthood, for times when children leave our homes. Let us prepare this week to return next weekend to celebrate this great moment in the life of the Church. Let us at St. Theresa rejoice that her parents, Louis and Zélie, are added to the great cloud of witnesses to whom we can turn as examples of marriage and family love and support in our times of trial. The 160-page book, The Extraordinary Parents of St. Therese of Lisieux by Helene Mongin (ISBN: ) was recently translated from French to English. The book presents the amazing story of these parents who are to be canonized on October 18 by Pope Francis. In the story of these two lives, you will learn of the amazing marriage and family life shared by Louis and Zélie. Happy though imperfect, joy-filled and yet knowing personal loss, successful and yet humble, the Martins are a great example for families today especially working mothers. Zélie was so successful in her personal lace-making business that Louis sold his watchmaking shop to work with Zélie full-time! This short work is worth the few hours it will take to get to know these new saints! It is published by Our Sunday Visitor and is available at for $ In addition, it is available through Amazon or through Mary Regina, Inc. or
