2 Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist A lthough they are few in number, there are a handful of select feasts that may be celebrated on the Sundays of Ordinary Time. Among these is this Sunday s celebration of the birth of St. John the Baptist based on Luke 1:36, which places the birth of St. John six months before the birth of Jesus. In his own life, John proclaimed the One promised by God the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29) reminding the people that what had been promised to their ancestors was fulfilled in God s own good time. And this invites us to reflect on the ways that we take God s promises to heart in our time and that we are called to be prophets, we are called to be almsgivers, pointing out the presence of the Holy One in our own communities, parishes, and families. You could buy a meal for a person who is hungry, you could spend time with a lonely person, you could step forward to join a parish committee that your experience and knowledge can help. All of the above actions involve you giving and sharing yourself and your gifts, but to be almsgivers and live a stewardship way of life, we must discern how best to share our gifts. Discernment needs the Holy Spirit and a desire to follow God s will, not our own. Our own desires and misconceptions can cause us to use our gifts unwisely. The more mindful we are of how, when, and why we are sharing ourselves, the greater the impact for God s glory. PRAYER Grant, we pray, almighty God, that your family may walk in the way of salvation and, attentive to what Saint John the Precursor urged, may come safely to the One he foretold, our Lord Jesus Christ. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Jesús mismo destacó el incomparable papel del Bautista, cuando dijo: Entre los hijos de las mujeres no hay ninguno que se pueda comparar con Juan el Bautista. INFANCIA ES DESTINO Is 49, 1-6. El nacimiento y la circuncisión de un niño eran eventos significativos que ofrecían una ocasión para que la familia, los vecinos y parientes, compartieran dicha alegría en un clima de cercanía. Zacarías e Isabel no vivían su vida en el aislamiento sino en la interacción con su familia ampliada. Todo mundo hablaba y daba su parecer, formulando interrogantes y comentarios sobre el futuro de aquel niño que había venido a alterar la rutina de un par de ancianos. Si Dios se había compadecido de aquella pareja sin descendencia, era lógico pensar que dicho niño marcaría una diferencia en Israel. Desde su origen, el pequeño Juan era una señal. La compasión de Dios no solamente iba atada a su nombre sino también a sumisión.
