2 My Dear Parishioners, As you know, at least one sniper in Dallas killed five police officers and wounded seven more in a coordinated attack that ended when police used a bomb to kill a shooter who told them he wanted to kill white officers, authorities said Friday. The attack came during one of several protests across the United States against the killing of two black men by police this week, the latest in a long string of killings that gave rise to the Black Lives Matter movement. Jesus asks the scholar, after hearing the story of the Good Samaritan, Which one of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robber s victim? The scholar answered, The one who treated him with mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. All life matters, regardless of skin color or sexual orientation. The instruction given to the scholar by Jesus is given regarding mercy. We too are instructed to, Go and do likewise. On a personal note, I was admitted on June 30 to the Texas Heart Institute at CHI St. Luke s for a scheduled cardiac catheterization. During the procedure, my doctor successfully inserted two stents, and the following day, I was sent home to recuperate. Following doctor s orders, I cut back on commitments this past week to rest and fully recover, and I anticipate returning soon to my usual schedule and feeling better than ever! Thanks be to God, to my surgeon, and to all of you for your continued prayers and support for me, your pastor. My absence next week-end is due to a pre-planned break made before my brief hospitalization and recovery. See you again on the week-end of July 24. Enjoy the summer and take care, Fr. Phil

4 Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich has decried the apparent targeting of gays and lesbians in the Orlando nightclub massacre and called for greater efforts on gun control, the first senior U.S. Catholic churchman to identify a likely reason the victims were singled out and raise the controversial issue of access to weapons. Our prayers and hearts are with the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando, their families and our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters, Cupich said in a statement issued Sunday afternoon (June 12). Cupich also sent a letter that was read at the Sunday evening Mass sponsored by the archdiocesan LGBT ministry, assuring them that the Archdiocese of Chicago stands with you. I stand with you. Let our shared grief and our common faith in Jesus, who called the persecuted blessed, unite us so that hatred and intolerance are not allowed to flourish, so that those who suffer mental illness know the support of a compassionate society, so that we find the courage to face forthrightly the falsehood that weapons of combat belong anywhere in the civilian population, Cupich wrote. His comments came as details emerged about the early morning attack on a gay nightclub by a Florida man a Muslim who pledged loyalty to the extremist Islamic State group that left 50 dead and more than 50 injured. It was the largest mass shooting in U.S. history and the worst terror attack since the Sept. 11 attacks in In response to hatred, we are called to sow love. In response to violence, peace. And, in response to intolerance, tolerance, Cupich said in his statement. Cupich, whose city faces a scourge of gun violence, also raised the issue of gun control in his statement as he did in the letter to the gay ministry. After Memorial Day, the number of people shot this year in Chicago was at about 1,500 up more than 50 percent over last year, according to the Chicago Tribune. Of those, at least 250 had been killed. The attacker in Orlando, Omar Mateen, 29, who was killed in a shootout at the club with police, recently bought a handgun and an AR-15-style assault rifle, the type of weapon commonly used in mass shootings. The people of the Archdiocese of Chicago stand with the victims and their loved ones, and reaffirm our commitment, with Pope Francis, to address the causes of such tragedy, including easy access to deadly weapons, Cupich said. We can no longer stand by and do nothing. -from WGNtv.com

6 Employment Opportunity St. Theresa in Memorial Park is seeking a Coordinator of Elementary Faith Formation and Children s Sacrament Preparation. Responsibilities include coordination and administration of Faith Formation and Sacramental Preparation sessions, including special activities such as music, paraliturgies, prayer services, parent meetings, lesson plans, Vacation Bible School, Children s Liturgy of the Word, and Sacred and Safe lessons. Coordinator will use innovative teaching ideas, such as multi-media resources and other non-traditional teaching tools. Coordinator will recruit and train volunteer catechists and supervise onsite session coordinators. Responsibilities also include maintaining consistent and regular communication with parents, scheduling Sacramental Preparation and Faith Formation events, purchasing necessary textbooks, materials and supplies as well as preparing an annual budget. Must be a team player, willing to collaborate with youth minister and adult education coordinator, as well as all other departments. This position will require flexibility to include working some weeknight and weekend hours. Education/Experience: Knowledge of diocesan Faith Formation and Sacramental Preparation requirements and guidelines. 3 or more years of experience in Catholic Faith Formation preferred. Successful candidate must be an active, practicing Catholic in good standing, have excellent communication and organizational skills, and be proficient in MS software and internet usage. Must be VIRTUS compliant or become so within one month of hire. If interested, please contact Kathy Corbett at k.corbett@sttheresa.cc.

7 Calling All Singers Do you like to sing in the car or in the shower? Can you sing on pitch? Do you wonder how you can be involved in your parish? We are looking for more singers in the choir! The choir is a welcoming, fun, and dedicated group of singers who enjoy ministry through music. During the choir year, we rehearse on Wednesday evenings and sing for the 10 am Mass on Sunday mornings. The choir is on break for the summer, and rehearsals will resume late August. The choir returns to the 10 am Mass on Sunday, September 11. If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact Kathy Corbett at k.corbett@sttheresa.cc. There is no audition, and you do not need to be able to read music to sing in the choir. We are also looking for more cantors and song leaders for the 10 am Mass. Cantors should be able to read music and be comfortable singing alone in front of a congregation. Cantors can be members of the choir, but it is not required. Song leaders lead the congregation in song from the podium and must sing regularly in the choir. If you feel called to be a cantor or song leader, please contact Kathy Corbett at k.corbett@sttheresa.cc for more information. CCSC Food Collection It is more important than many realize to collect food during the summer for the people in our community. Many children receive free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch at their school during the school year; however, now that school is out for the summer, it becomes more costly for families to keep their children fed. Please remember to continue to bring non-perishable food items with you when you come to the church, and place them in the basket at the front of the church. Items mostly needed are pastas, beans, cans of soup and pasta dinners, canned fruit and canned vegetables. Thank you for your continued support of the efforts of CCSC.
