1 The Return of the Prodigal Son, by Rembrandt Fourth Sunday of Lent March 6, 2016
2 Today s Gospel narrates one of the best-known parables in scripture. In response to the complaint of the Pharisees and Scribes, that Jesus eats with sinners, Jesus tells a long story about the prodigal son and his forgiving father. Given the context, the major lesson is one of forgiveness. But why a story of family relationships? Perhaps because often the hardest people to forgive, or to ask for forgiveness, are those closest to us, those whom we should be able to count on not to disrespect or betray us. The younger son, perhaps spoiled, is foolish and ungrateful. He crawls back home only because he is flat broke and starving; he is hardly an admirable character. The father s love goes far deeper than his son s bad behavior, however, and he welcomes him home with open arms. Then there is the older, obedient, hard-working son who pouts because his father throws a party for the wayward brother. Dad makes it clear he is not playing favorites: My son everything I have is yours. But now we must celebrate and rejoice because your brother was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found. (Lk 15:32) Dead? Lost? Yes, relationally and spiritually. Do we recognize any of these relationships within our families? Many parents lose sleep worrying about a son or daughter who is troubled or is in trouble. Sibling rivalry is not uncommon. Some parents pay less attention to the well-behaved child than the difficult one. And, where was the mother in the parable? Did she spoil the younger son; did she scold the father for giving him what he asked for? In contemporary terms, would this family be labeled dysfunctional? Are there really any perfect families? Perhaps most families are normal, or good with dysfunctional moments, and, with God s grace, are able to forgive each other and move beyond the dysfunction. Paul reminds us that God has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has even given us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Cor. 5: 18) The important thing is to forgive each other. Forgiveness comes more easily when we acknowledge that we are all sinners, all in need of forgiveness, and our loving Parent is always eager to run to meet us and welcome us home. This reflection on today s Gospel on the Prodigal Son was written by Sister Marie Lucey, OSF. She is the Director of Advocacy and Member Relations for Franciscan Action Network (FAN). More information about Franciscan Action Network can be found at This organization is a great resource for connecting our spirituality with issues of peace and justice.
