3 Feast of the Holy Family Our new parish center is really taking shape! The roof is on, the windows are positioned, and the fruit of the workers labor is beginning to be evident. The interior work will soon begin. Soon, there will be heat in the new building so the workers will be able to work more efficiently in the middle of a cold winter. Much work remains to be done but the progress in encouraging and our dreams for a new space are moving forward. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who are participating in this endeavor. Your prayers are appreciated. Your donations keep coming in to help make our dream a reality. We appreciate your pledges and donations. Please keep them coming as we still have a long way to go. This new center will help our parish to grow and to serve you better in a facility which is accessible and very inviting. If you have not yet been part of this endeavor, we would welcome you to come aboard so that you too can take pride in this very important venture. We have placed donation cards in the pews and in the back of church if you wish to donate. Our completion date should be in mid spring. 4 December 30, 2018 Contribution Envelopes Contribution envelopes will be available at the back of the churches this weekend (December 29 and 30th.)There has been some reorganization of the envelope system and some will find that their envelope numbers have changed. There will be complete continuity in the reporting of funds. Thank you for your cooperation. Message of the Week "After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions, and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers." As we celebrate the feast of the Holy Family, this Gospel exposes us to a strange tension. While this family is one we can look to for an example, they are not quite the same family unit as everyone else. There is an otherness to Jesus, something profound. And yet, perhaps on second thought, are our families so different? When Mary and Joseph encountered Jesus in the temple, "they were astonished." But at what? Mary's response is surprised. They're not astonished that Jesus is preaching in a place for respected teachers. They're not astonished that their son has captured the attention of the wisest men of the time period. They're astonished at his seemingly disobedient behavior! "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." All our children have an "otherness" about them, something that makes them unique and different. They are distinctly not "me." What will our own children become? What temple will they wander off to? Who will they astound? QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK First Reading Hannah, the mother of the prophet Samuel, is portrayed as a woman of great faith. Upon reflection, how would you describe the faith of your mother? Second Reading John teaches us that we can be called "children of God" if we believe in Jesus and love one another. How well do you think you do these two mandates? Gospel Reading Luke is the only evangelist to record an event in the life of Jesus as a boy. It is an event filled with "great anxiety" for Joseph and Mary. What lesson(s) do you learn from this story? Day Away Program Day Away is a social program for adults with early stages of Alzheimer s or related Dementia. This program provides their caregivers a much-needed respite and relief from constant care and responsibility every Thursday 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. For the participant, activities include games, crafts, bingo, local entertainment etc. Volunteers are needed from 8:30 am - 12:00 pm or 11:30 am -3:00 pm. CPR Course on Sunday, January 27th There will be a CPR certification course offered at the Marian Center on Sunday, January 27th at 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. The course will be taught by Captain George Clayman of the Bristol Fire Dept. The course is $25.00 and there will be refreshments. Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays Help Needed Eucharistic Adoration at North American Martyrs Oratory is every Thursday from 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Adorers are needed from 11:00 to Noon, Noon to 1:00 PM, and 3:00 to 4:00 PM. Please call Sandy at the office at if you would be willing to help. Please consider donating blood. Parking at St. Matthew Church The construction gates around the church will stay closed throughout the winter. The two university lots on the corners of High St. are available for your use. We ask that you please leave the street parking and the lot across from the church for our elderly and handicapped parishioners who have trouble walking. Thank you for your cooperation.

5 Arts And Environment Christmas Decorating The Advent and Christmas season is a busy season for the Arts and Environment Committees of Plymouth and Bristol. Last Sunday, both groups gathered with parishioners young and old to assemble, clean and hang decorations, to carry in flowers and Christmas trees. After a lot of hard work, I am sure you can all attest to how beautiful our worship spaces are! Thank you to everyone who helped, and thank you to Mike Power for taking pictures in Plymouth.
