1 September 2016 Vol. 49 No. 9 The Great Bend Christian Because we are in the midst of a presidential election, on September 7th we are starting a brand new sermon series called "God and Politics". In this 3 week series we are going to be talking about the political nature of God and Jesus, and what it means to vote according to your faith. Don't worry, at no point during this series will I be telling you who to vote for, or giving you my political stances. The goal of this series is to help us think a bit more broadly and deeply about the importance and necessity of politics in our world, and how we are called to get involved. My journey with breast cancer took a side trip with an infection that is getting better. I will soon be on track and have radiation. God is good! Vivian Bray Now that everyone is beginning to memorize our mission/vision statement, or at least getting the gist of it, it is time not only to make this a reality in our church, which we are doing in many ways, but it is time for all of us to begin to embody this calling which God has given us. We want this statement to be more than just words on a page, because we believe that God is calling us to make it flesh and blood by the way that we live our daily lives. What I would encourage all of you to do to begin to make our mission/vision a reality is to spend about 5 minutes a day going over our mission statement praying that 1) God will help you to bring heaven to earth in all that you do, and 2) for God to use you to inspire ordinary people to live extraordinary lives for Christ. I think you will be surprised how this little extra commitment will not only help our church to thrive, but will begin to transform you and your life according to God s purposes!

Boys and Girls will begin meeting weekly in their own separate groups. The Boys will meet on Weds. Nights 6:15-6:55 pm beginning on Sept. 7th The Girls will meet on Sunday afternoons at 4:00-4:50 pm beginning on Sept. 11th Each Group s curriculum will be gender specific and deal with issues specific to them and how they can use their faith. Once a quarter, each Group will do something special. If you are or if you have a 5th grader, we hope you will plan on joining us! 7 BARTON COUNTY BAG-A-BITE OCTOBER 16, 2016, WE WANT YOU! Seventeen local churches invite you to join them as they pack over 130,000 meals for people who do not have a daily meal. This multidenominational effort will welcome people of all ages and backgrounds to help pack the meals in a fun day of service to others. Before volunteer registration can open, we need your help. Each meal costs 30 cents. This includes the cost of the food, packaging supplies, and the international shipping. Please consider a donation that will help fund the meals that we will be packaging. This 6 week series is all about examining some of the little things in the Christian faith, to put into perspective how big they actually are. This series is guaranteed to change the way you understand what is important in your faith.

8 In everything give thanks; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus (I Thessalonians 5:18). Talk about an attitude of gratitude! What does giving thanks in everything mean for daily living? Do we thank God for the blessings of life-the big things and the small things, the obvious and the not so obvious? Food and shelter are basic necessities. Family and friends provide meaning and fellowship. Good health is important to our general well being. Though we enjoy these gifts each day, it is easy to take them for granted and not express our appreciation. What about your job? Do we view it as our vocation? The word vocation literally means calling. We usually think of calling as being related to some kind of ministry. But God calls and equips all of us so that, by the quality of our work in our vocation, He is honored and we reflect His image...no matter what our work is. Colossians 3: says, Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.you are serving the Lord Christ. If we could see Jesus Christ as our boss, would it change our attitude about our job? Let s face it: some of us have a kind of love/hate relationship with work. We spend roughly a third of our adult lives making a living and what is our attitude about that? Work is not just a means to a paycheck. It is a gift from God to help develop character. It is an opportunity to be a Christ-like example to those with whom we work. It motivates us to be productive and to achieve a sense of accomplishment and value. As Christians we can say, All this, and a paycheck too! A steward s heart is a thankful heart. Someone has said it well: Thanksgiving, to be truly thanksgiving, is first thanks, then giving. You can give without being thankful, but you cannot be thankful without giving. When you give, you not only are acknowledging that everything you have is a gift from God, but you are expressing your gratitude to Him. The Stewardship Committee

9 New Women s Bible Study The Gospel of Mark, begins September 27th at 6:30 pm. This is a 7-week study by Lisa Harper. Please contact Marta Edmonds or Becky Hill with any questions. The Young Adult Bible Study begins again Sunday, September 18th, at 5 pm. This is a 6-week study over the first part of the Book of Genesis where we will be studying the creation stories, the fall, Cain and Abel, Tower of Babel, and more. If you are 18 to 40ish please put it on your busy calendars and plan to be there. This is a great opportunity to go deeper in your faith. Daycare will be provided. On Wednesday, September 21, at 6:00 pm, we are starting a new Advanced Bible Study over the creation stories called "In the Beginning". In this class our goal is to delve into these stories at a seminary level to understand their depth, strangeness, beauty, and power. This class will last 5-6 weeks, depending how long it takes us to get though the material, and will take you deeper than you have ever gone before. Because of the nature of this class, we are only going to allow a total of 7 people to sign up. This is only for those who are willing and able to attend each class and do the homework (about an hour a week).
