2 Pastor s Ponderings Greetings! It is April, and we can look forward to the promise of warmer days to come. Blossoms will soon appear on the trees, and the blessing of new growth will be everywhere to see and enjoy. As we continue in this Season of Lent, I find myself thinking about how the culmination of it, starting with Maundy Thursday and extending to Easter Sunday, could or should or does fit into our lives. We will once again be asked to reflect upon powerful events that took place over 2,000 years ago. This drama that we will have another opportunity to recall began with acts of unspeakable cruelty fed by nearly unbounded fear and hatred, and concluded with a glory unimaginable to our mortal sense of being. Our celebration of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior is close at hand. I have a question for you: Is Easter more of a single calendar event or is it a forever sort of thing? At the heart of this question is the matter of how the events of Easter affect you. Some might say that at the very least, Easter is a day when we can joyously celebrate the risen Christ. Some may be content to leave it at that. I m not so sure that s true. Actually, I m very sure that we cannot leave it at that. The reason that we cannot leave Easter to be a one-day event, sort of like Christmas, is because the resurrection of Jesus Christ is not the sole point. The resurrection of Jesus Christ was a means to an end. It enabled two very important things to happen: Jesus conquered death and made eternal life possible for us, and it became possible for Jesus to be with us always and forever. That s the heart of the matter: Jesus conquered death, and Jesus is with us. In fact, Jesus is with us whether we want him to be or not. Jesus is with us no matter how deeply we believe in him, or not. Jesus is still the best example of how we should live, and God invites us to follow Jesus to the best of our ability, every day of our lives. God even sent the Holy Spirit to help us out with that. Just in case you might ever find yourself thinking of Easter as more like a one-day event, know that God wants you to let the power of what happened on that day be in your heart. God wants you to be inspired, transformed, enabled, and equipped by the impact and by the implication of that day. You are invited to make Easter a forever celebration. If you would like to participate in Pennies for Missions, pick up a soup can on the counter in the Epworth Room. Then at home, for every meal you eat, place two pennies in your soup can.
