1 September 2018 Newsletter One of the pivotal moments in the book of Acts is Peter s vision where he sees a large sheet coming down from heaven with animals that good Jews were not supposed to eat, since they were considered unclean. In that vision he hears a voice telling him to get up, kill and eat, but he refuses since to do so would go against everything that his religion tells him. The voice, however, persists and tells him that what God has made clean, he must not call unclean. From this vision, the early church takes its mission to spread the good news of Jesus not just to Jew, but to Gentile as well. This vision pushes them in directions that they could not have imagined and inspires them to do things that they would never have tried. In a few weeks, on September 9th, the session will be introducing our new mission/vision statement. While it may not be the earth shaking revelation that Peter s vision brought to the early church, it is something that will help to guide us through the coming years and maybe even push us in directions that we haven t thought about before. And that is exactly what mission and vision statements are about. Sometimes separate, in our case combined, these statements are used in organizations to state why the group gets together and what it is trying to accomplish. Ideally a statement like this is memorable and easy to explain to someone who doesn t know what the organization is about. Ours, I believe, does both. Additionally, we will use the statement in making decisions as a way to help us choose what we should do as a congregation to live out the mission of Jesus Christ here in this time and place. This statement is the product of hundreds of hours of conversations and work which the visioning team led. It had its origins over two years ago when the session decided to hire Coach/Consultant Jim Kitchens to help the congregation explore a vision for new ministry in our new location. Over the many months, we have had conversations that examined what was special and important to the folks at Living Hope; we talked about priorities and what we want to see happen for our congregation; and we have listened to a number of folks in the community to know what are the concerns and issues that we might engage. Then, after sifting through the mountains of information, the visioning team brought all of this together to create our mission/ vision statement. This statement gives a direction, but also reminds us who we are and what we value; it tells what is and helps to guide what will be here at Living Hope as we seek to live out the good news of Jesus Christ. So, are you ready to see the new vision/ mission statement for Living Hope? I know that the session is excited to share it! We d love to have you come to worship on Sunday, September 9th, and share the vision together and then work to take it out to the world!
