Hugh, OP When the Jesus in me meets the Jesus in you.. that s holiness! That is exactly what I had the honor to witness last Sunday afternoon in the Social Hall right here at Holy Innocents. Our 5th and 8th Graders from our Wednesday Session invited special friends to join us for an afternoon of fun and games. These friends were from the Valhalla North East Recreational Center. Under the leadership of Melissa Moran and Maria & Jack Fitzgerald, it was an amazing day. The afternoon consisted of great food, games, prizes, music and above all.connections! Connections that were made with joy, excitement, welcome, acceptance, compassion, innocence, and genuine LOVE! I was honored to be a part of something so wonderful and I thank Melissa Moran for her vision and perseverance in making it possible. We thank our friends Nancy and Kathy from the Recreational Center and all the staff and volunteers for joining and supporting our day. My message to our students who participated is to keep your hearts open and continue to make a difference in the lives of others and I promise.you will make this world a better place! 4 Have you ever noticed that some of the older hymns we use often have the same melody but different lyrics? There are several examples and this week s The King of Love My Shepherd Is is one of them. The tune for this hymn is listed as traditional Irish melody and attributed to St. Columba. Its melodic partner is O Breathe on Me, O Breath of God also listed with the same credits. Another set of songs that share the same melody are All People that on Earth Do Dwell and Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow. This pair is attributed to the Genevan Psalter compiled over a number of years in the Swiss city of Geneva, a center of Protestant activity during the Reformation. The Genevan Psalter was created in response to the teaching of John Calvin that communal singing of psalms in the vernacular is a foundational aspect of church life. This was in contrast at the time to the Catholic practice of chanting sacred texts in Latin by the clergy only. Additionally, the tune for Lord of All Hopefulness, uses the melody of an Irish folksong collected in the village of Slane. When we sing Be Thou My Vision you ll hear it again. In English hymn books the place of collection is attributed as the tune name, in our hymnal it simply says Irish melody. Speculation abounds on how this came to be. Lyricists may have used a familiar tune so that participants could focus on the words. Simple melodies fostered participation, copyright laws and litigation were not as prevalent. In the 1800s accompanists had a tune book and congregants had a hymn book. The tune played matched the lyrics based on meter and the number of syllables. As people became more musically literate, it became more common to print the melody, and provide a hymn name, often the first line, and lyrics. The Youth Group meets Sunday evenings at 6:15pm. The 6 th Grade CYO Girls are running another clothing collection drive, this time for the Junior and Senior Classes of Claremont International High School. Claremont is a designated, Title I School where the majority of the students come from high poverty areas in the South Bronx. The Claremont high schoolers will be starting their internships this week (2/28) and they have expressed concern to their teacher, a Pleasantville mom, that they do not have enough professional looking clothing to wear in a business setting. We want to help them by collecting new or gentlyused professional/business casual clothing in ALL SIZES. We need clothes for young men AND young women. Couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary anytime during 2018 are invited to attend the Gold Wedding Jubilee Mass with Cardinal Dolan at Saint Patrick s Cathedral on Sunday, June 3rd at 2:15pm. Preregistration is required. Please contact the parish office at Closing date to register for the Mass is Monday, May 14th. Please leave all clothing donations in the designated box on the 21 Guion Street (between Manville and Bedford) No need to ring the bell. 6 PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council of Holy Innocents is comprised of dedicated parishioners willing to share their individual talents to serve the parish. The council works with the pastor and parish staff in an advisory capacity to support and enhance the life and ministries of the parish. Each year, new members are added to the council for a term of three years. This year the council is hoping to add eight new members. Parish council members should be interested in leading or assisting our various committees including but not limited to the following: Liturgy, Communications/Public Relations, Fundraising, Spiritual Life and Social Outreach. Nominating petitions will be available in the narthex, parish hall and at Our Lady of Pompeii until Sunday, March 18th. LENTEN YOUNG ADULT RETREAT: What Is God s Plan for My Life? Get away from the hustle and bustle of life and get clarity on God s purpose and plan for your life during our Lenten Young Adult Retreat Weekend, March 23-25, at the Graymoor Spiritual Life Center. Situated along the Appalachian Trail atop a mountain overlooking the Hudson River Valley, you d be hardpressed to find a more peaceful place to get re-focused and re-energized. FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT March 11, 2018 Holy Innocents Speaker Series Presents: People, Look East: The History and Traditions of the Eastern Catholic Churches Explanatory: Few people know that the Catholic Church is actually a family of 23 churches in full communion with one another, and united in faith and charity with the pope. While the Roman Catholic Church is by far the largest of these communities of faith, Eastern Catholics make up smaller but by no means any less ancient or Catholic churches, with their own historic rites, liturgies and cultures that date to the time of the apostles. Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 7:30pm Holy Innocents Church, Social Hall Guest Speaker: Deacon Greg Kandra First Reading: 2 Chronicles 36:14-16, The people of Judah practiced many abominations, even polluting God s temple in Jerusalem. They mocked the messengers he sent among them; until he grew so angry he delivered them to the King of the Chaldeans. Those who weren t killed were exiled and became servants for seventy years. Cyrus, King of Persia, was ordered to build a temple to God in Jerusalem, and he freed the servants as God had inspired him to do. Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 Paul declares that God brought us to life in Jesus, though we had been dead from our sins. He reminds us that it was not a reward for our good service so no one should take credit. Instead, we must remember that it was not our doing, but a sign of God s mercy and love for us. Gospel: John 3:14-21 God so loved the world, he sent us his only Son so that all who believed would have eternal life in him. The light came into the world, but those who were wicked avoided it, for fear that their evil deeds would be exposed.
