3 Blood donations fall off dramatically during the summer when vacations and travel occupy more of everyone s time. The need for blood, however, does not decline and supplies rapidly dwindle. To help correct shortages that invariably occur, our parishioner James Bathon with the support of Holy Innocents Parish will be hosting a Blood Drive in the Holy Innocents Social Hall, on September 15th or 16th (TBA) from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Since it is also difficult to organize community drives during the summer, blood donors from all towns are welcome to come to lend their help. Please consider donating, we would really like to make this a new Holy Innocents Community Mission/Service For information, to sign up or to volunteer, preferably send an to jbathonblooddrive@aol.com but you can call/ text (914) Although it is helpful to let the organizers know in advance that you plan to come, walk-ins are always accepted. WOODS SCHOOL OF IRISH DANCING The Woods School of Irish Dancing is now accepting enrollment for beginners starting in September. Classes for children will b held on Thursday evenings at Our Lady of Pompeii in Pleasantville. We will be training servers in September; me at: tomconaty@optonline.net 25th & 50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Holy Innocents is planning a celebration on October 18th for those parishioners who are celebrating their 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary during Participants will be recognized at the 11am Mass followed by a reception in our Social Hall. If you are celebrating either Wedding Anniversary this year, please register with the parish office by calling FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry is now accepting donations. The Pantry is in need of the following: canned fruit, tuna, salmon pasta sauce, beans, brown rice, white rice. There is a special need for low or lower sodium foods such as: canned vegetables, shredded wheat, chicken and beef broth. Two separate sets of keys have been found in the church. #490 Page3

Lesson plans, materials, suggestions for a wonderful experience are provided. The Religious Ed Calendar will be posted soon on the Parish web site under the Religious Ed section. It will also be available for each session on Burbio accessed through Parent Letters will be sent through US Mail at the end of August. Letters will confirm your Child s registration and their class time and day. There will also be a class calendar included. 5 This weekend our Communion hymn is Eat This Bread written by composer Jacques Berthier. The scriptural text for this hymn is the same as our gospel reading from Chapter 6 of John. Jacques Berthier was born at Auxerre, Burgundy in 1923 to musical parents. His father, Paul, was a composer and master organist for the Cathedral of Auxerre for fifty years. Jacques first studied under his parents and learned organ, harmony and composition. Soon, he began to compose melodies and instrumental pieces. After the war, he entered the César Franck School in Paris and became a serious student of composition. He studied organ, the fugue and counterpoint, and married the daughter of one of his instructors. In 1955, Berthier was asked to compose his first works for the Taizé Community, which at that time consisted of only twenty brothers who sang beautifully in four equal voices. The brothers approached him again and asked him to compose simple repetitive chants for use by the increasing number of young people who came from all parts of the world each year to gather at Taizé. Over a period of twenty years, a vast repertoire of original and altogether new music was created and became known throughout the world as the Music from Taizé. The concept for this unique form of congregational singing was developed by Brother Robert, one of the early members of the community. He gathered and prepared the texts, sent them to Berthier with specific guidelines, and because of his compositional craft and creativity, Berthier produced what may be the most widely sung contemporary Christian music in the world. We use several Taizé style selections at Holy Innocents, including Ubi Caritas, and Jesus Remember Me. In 1983, GIA publishers approached Jacques Berthier and Brother Robert for a second volume of Taizé music. The publishers were impressed with Berthier s genius and his ability to clothe text in tuneful melody. Perhaps most impressive was his sense of the natural word accent of languages such as English, which he did not speak. He composed texts for more than twenty languages reaching all parts of the globe. Jacques Berthier was appointed organist at St.Ignace, the Jesuit church in Paris in 1961, a position he held until his death in He continued to compose and publish throughout his life for traditional Catholic parishes including masses for Monastic communities, collections of instrumental pieces for flute, oboe and organ, as well as larger sacred works for concert performance. His style other than the Taizé music was quite personalized and almost always used the Gregorian modes. DRIVE FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES The Social Concerns Committee, as part of our outreach program to the Highbridge community, is conducting a drive for NEW school supplies. These supplies will be distributed to 200 impoverished children before the opening of the coming school year. New items requested include: black and white composition books, pencils, pens, erasers, rulers, crayons, folders, loose leaf paper, loose leaf binders and backpacks. Donations may be left in the appropriate box in the Tompkins Ave. entrance of the church. Your donations are deeply appreciated and will be put to good use. #490 Page5

TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b: Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel and told them if it did not please them to serve God, then they must decide who they would serve. The people claimed that God had brought them out of slavery and protected them on their journey. Therefore, they would serve, the Lord their God, and no one else. Second Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32: Husbands and wives should love one another as Christ loved the Church. They should nourish and care for each other as Christ cared for the church. Through the union between the two, they become one. Gospel: John 6:60-69: Many of Jesus' followers were still disturbed by his teaching of the living bread, which they could not yet fully understand. Jesus explained that the Spirit gives life, and flesh is unimportant. Some of the disciples decided to leave. Jesus asked if the Twelve also wanted to leave. Although they do not completely understand yet, they have enough faith in Jesus to stay because they believe he is God's holy one. #490 Page6
