4 Today is the Second Sunday of Advent. Let s light our 2nd purple candle on our wreath. Remember boys and girls, even though we use the color purple in our Religious Education program, you may see the color blue in our church or in other churches we visit. That is because some churches try to help us distinguish between Advent and Lent. What color do you see in our church today and what color is our pastor wearing? There are so many wonderful things that we are doing in our Religious Ed classes during this Advent Season. Our program as a whole is once again collecting Christmas donations for St. Vincent s Psychiatric Hospital in Harrison, NY. Our different grades are collecting and focusing on various departments and units of the hospital. As we try to keep Christ in Christmas we are putting our faith into action. We look forward to having some of our 8th grade classes deliver these gifts and spend some time with the patients as we move closer to Christmas. On December 8th our Saturday 8th grade class, under the leadership of Fiona Moroney joined Ms. Maria in visiting the Williamsbridge Manor Nursing Home in the Bronx. Mrs. Moroney, our students and volunteer moms, have been planning, preparing and practicing over the last few weeks to make this day so special. From brainstorming to the holiday bake sale, to the creating of the holiday centerpieces, bringing individual gifts, and, of course planning our beautiful holiday concert.our concert consisted of Christmas carols, Irish dance and our own musicians. It was a day we will always remember, a day when our children were able to look into the eyes of Jesus in the sick, the poor and the forgotten. As Jesus says, what you do for the least of your sisters and brothers you have done unto me..well done good and faithful children...well done. Youth Ministry consists of our Youth Group and the CYO Basketball program. To join Youth Group, teens should just show up at any meeting and sign in with the youth leaders. ALL 9th-12th graders are welcome. The YG s main focus is on service and social justice. We meet most 6:15pm. We have Youth Masses the first Sunday of each month (Starting in Oct). The CYO Basketball Program consists of K-2 Clinics as well as teams from 3rd-12th grades. When we have enough adult volunteers we will also run a CYO track and field program. 5 LONGEST MARRIED COUPLE SEARCH (based on the World Marriage Day Initiative) This Sunday night, December 9th at 7:30pm the Music Ministry is presenting our fifteenth annual Lessons and Carols. The Music Ministry joins with our parish lectors and our pastoral team combining talents to create a service of scripture and song that will lead you from prophecy to fulfillment, from Old Testament foretelling to a birthday celebration. Through the years, the service has undergone additions and revisions, but its original intention, showing the loving purpose of God from the fall of man, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus told through Bible readings (lessons) interspersed with hymns (carols) has been maintained. The parish musicians, the Adult, Teen, and Junior choirs have been working together to make this a memorable evening for all. We hope you will join us for this special evening of song and prayer in preparation for the holy season of Christmas. A reception will follow in the social hall. All are welcome!! The search begins for the Longest Married Couple in the Archdiocese of New York! To enter: Couples must be sacramentally married for a minimum of 65 years and reside in the Archdiocese of New York. The longest married couples will receive commemorative certificates signed by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan. The winning couple will be interviewed and featured in an article in Catholic New York. A BLUE CHRISTMAS MASS A Quiet Eucharist for Those Who Find This Season Very Difficult For some, memories of past experiences, present pain, and recent loss can become just overwhelming during this season. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day can churn up so many things that perhaps we simply need some space, some stillness, and some calm to steady ourselves to move forward to a new year. Or, maybe we re just not up to more hymns, more singing, more crowds, more noise, and more giddy ho-ho-ho s. So, we invite all of us who carry heavy burdens of loss and loneliness, or simply need a tranquil pause to come and join for the Eucharist of the Christ child on one of the longest nights of the year. We shall join at 7:00pm for about forty-five minutes of a very still celebration of the Eucharist accompanied by meditative music. We trust that each person will find hope and comfort in knowing that none of us is every really alone. #490 Page5
