3 Pastor s Poetry Post-Its Star of the Nativity In the cold season, in a locality accustomed to heat more than to cold, to horizontality more than to a mountain, a child was born in a cave in order to save the world; it blew as only in deserts in winter it blows, athwart. To Him, all things seemed enormous; His mother s breast, the steam out of the ox s nostrils, Caspar, Balthasar, Melchior the team of Magi, their presents heaped by the door, ajar. He was but a dot, and a dot was the star. Keenly, without blinking, through pallid, stray clouds, upon the child in the manager, from far awayfrom the depth of the universe, from its opposite end the star was looking into the cave. Participants spend Monday through Friday exploring how God calls us in our lives and how we might respond. During your week at Notre Dame, you will share in dynamic large group experiences, interactive small group time, profound liturgies, and excellent music. Notre Dame students lead this program, and participants get to experience college student life by eating in the dining halls, staying in the dorms, and enjoying the beautiful campus. John Hopkins Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, the son of an Episcopal bishop. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1839 and earned a Master s degree in In 1850 he graduated from the General Theological Seminary and became the seminary s first music teacher from 1855 to The Episcopal Church celebrated Epiphany in both America and the United Kingdom and during the 1800s this special day was traditionally the day the Christmas tree was taken down and children received the gifts and treats that had been hanging on it since it had been first cut. John Hopkins Jr. had no children of his own, but had several nieces and nephews and often observed them counting down the moments until they could raid the evergreen. They, like so many, were unaware of the symbolism the bearing of gifts had to those brought by the wise men to Jesus. In 1857 he decided his gift to his nieces and nephews would be a moving tribute to the legendary visitors from the East as described in the gospel of Matthew. As a seminary graduate, he knew little was known about the travelers so he combined the biblical record of the trip with legends that had been passed down. The result is a song that is instructive and worshipful. The cadence of the melody fully captures the image of a trip across the desert and plains on camels. The hymn has an oriental, or Middle Eastern feel, and the words dramatically embrace the trip, as if he had been there with them. John Hopkins Jr. served as rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania and delivered the eulogy at the funeral of President Ulysses S. Grant. He died in 1885 in Hudson, NY and is buried next to his father at Bishop s House, Rock Point, Vermont. Kennedy in 1963 a few months before his assassination. The 2018 Sign Up Board is available in the Social Hall. Please consider hosting a Sunday coffee. MASS FOR HEALING First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah speaks poetically of the coming of the Lord. He describes how darkness covers the earth but light and glory appear over God s chosen people. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul tells the Ephesians that the Jews and Gentiles are now co-heirs of the promises God has made. He explains that both groups are now members of one body through Jesus Christ. Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 After Jesus birth, three astrologers from the east came to Jerusalem and inquired about the newborn king of the Jews. King Herod became greatly angered, and asked the astrologers to bring him more information about the child once they had found him, so that he too could pay homage to the infant. However, Herod s true plan was to kill Jesus. The wise men were warned in a dream not to return to him and they took a different route to return home.
