3 CHUTZPAH THE NERVE! This Sunday s Gospel account from the Gospel of St. Luke really gives us an insight into the devil or Satan as he is also known. Jesus is Baptized by John in the Jordan river, and the Holy Spirit comes upon Him in the form of a Dove. God the Father speaks about how Jesus is His Beloved Son in Whom He is well-pleased. Pretty powerful, right? Then the Spirit leads Jesus out into the desert to fast and pray for forty days. In some ways the harsh desert and demanding fasting weakens Jesus a bit. Aha! Here s my chance, thinks the devil. So he goes after Jesus at least three times playing on the human weakness. Hunger, pride, taking the easy way out are very tempting. After all, who really wants to be working and preaching for three years only to be betrayed by one of His closest friends, misunderstood and rejected by the religious leader of the times, and finally made to suffer in a most excruciating manner resulting in his painful death? The devil is smart and uses every trick in his bag of misery at the end of the long period of prayer and fasting. And Luke tells us that Satan is not finished---he will return to try Jesus and tempt Him again. Doesn t seem like Satan is hesitating to go after the Son of God Himself. Pretty cheeky, right? So if Satan goes so far as to harass Jesus, don t you think that he might attack you at whatever point of weakness you have? Use this wonderful period of prayer, fasting and almsgiving that we call Lent, to strengthen yourself against the attacks of the devil. Call upon St. Michael and the other angels to protect and help you during this, your own forty days. Fr. Scordo, O.P. 5 PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council of Holy Innocents is comprised of dedicated parishioners willing to share their individual talents to serve the parish. The council works with the pastor and parish staff in an advisory capacity to support and enhance the life and ministries of the parish. Each year, new members are added to the council for a term of three years. This year, as always, we are hoping to add new members to the council. Parish council members should be interested in leading or assisting our committees including but not limited to the following: Liturgy, Communications/Public Relations, Fundraising, Social Outreach and Spiritual Life. Nominating petitions will be available in the narthex, parish hall and at Our Lady of Pompeii until Monday, April 1st. At this time, please give prayerful consideration to volunteering as a member of the Parish Council. For additional information or questions, contact Bridget Dinardi at or bpplus4@aol.com. #490 Page5

6 Now that we have begun the liturgical season of Lent, there will be some musical changes to the liturgy. The first is the omission of the Gloria from the order of the Mass. The only exceptions to this omission are the celebrations of feasts and solemnities that occur during this season. A solemnity is a feast day of the highest rank, celebrating a mystery of faith such as the Trinity, an event in the life of Jesus, His mother Mary or an important saint. This year there are two solemnities during Lent, the Feast of St. Joseph celebrated on Tuesday, March 19 th, and the Annunciation celebrated on Monday, March 25th. In place of the Gloria we will begin to sing the Kyrie, one of the earliest penitential supplications used in the Christian Church, originating from the Old Testament. We are using the Kyrie from the Mass of Renewal written by Curtis Stephan, it is #861 in our hymnal. The Greek words are: Kyrie eleison; Christe eleison; Kyrie eleison, meaning Lord have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord have mercy. The cantor will begin the intonation and will invite you to respond, just as we do with our Responsorial psalms. The Kyrie follows the Confiteor, I Confess, which is concluded by a short prayer of absolution from the presider before we move to the Liturgy of the Word. The word mercy in English is the translation of the Greek word eleos. This word has the same ultimate root as the Greek word for oil, or more precisely, olive oil, a substance which was used extensively as a soothing agent for bruises and minor wounds. The oil was poured into the wound and gently massaged in, thus soothing, comforting and making whole the injured part. The Hebrew word for mercy is hesed, and means steadfast love. If we substitute these words in our minds as we sing the Kyrie at mass, we are saying, Lord, soothe me, comfort me, take away my pain, show me your steadfast love. Thus mercy does not refer so much to justice, a very Western interpretation, but to the infinite loving-kindness of God, and His compassion. The Interfaith Emergency Food Pantry continues to benefit from the generosity of the parishioners of Holy Innocents. The Pantry serves families in the community who are in need. Clients come every other week and always find the Pantry shelves well stocked. We recently received a letter thanking our parish for a monetary donation of $1300. In addition to the food you donate, many of you, anonymously, also donate money. The letter gratefully acknowledged the donation and states that the gift will be used to purchase food when supplies are low. This is a cumulative total of several monetary gifts. Frank Moro, until recently, was the face of our parish to the Pantry. He organized the volunteers and instructed them on what needed to be done, and how to deliver the donations. He also took inventory of what was needed and published the list in our bulletin. As in all of our ministries, the success depends on volunteers. We are very fortunate to have increased our group of volunteers who faithfully check the bins, and make sure your donations are delivered weekly to the Pantry. Thanks to Kathy DePrima, Connie Hennelly, Caroline Kelly, Anne Morales (and her team), Rose Pagano, Nick Stanton, Roxanne Surace, and Barbara Weldon who continue Frank s good work, giving up their time to supply the Pantry shelves. Thanks to all of you who donate! Our parish is blessed in many ways, know that your generous giving keeps the Pantry full to help our neighbors, and our volunteers busy! Many thanks to Kyle Largey for the tree benches at All Souls Cemetery. We invite you to join in singing the Kyrie throughout Lent as a simple and sincere prayer for God s compassion and love, keeping in mind that God s majesty and His power are exceeded only by His mercy. Bereavement Support Group for adults who have lost a loved one (spouse, parent, sibling) will be held in our parish beginning April 1st at 7:00pm. If you are interested in attending please call the parish office at (914) Monday-Friday and leave your name and phone number. As part of his Eagle Scout project Kyle was responsible for all factors from design, supplies, building and installation. We are very grateful to be the recipient of his hard work which provides a place for rest and reflection when visiting All Souls Cemetery. #490 Page6
