3 Pastor s Poetry Post-Its What We Need Is Here Geese appear high over us, pass, and the sky closes. Abandon, as in love or sleep, holds them to their way, clear in the ancient faith: what we need is here. And we pray, not for new earth or heaven, but to be quiet in heart, and in eye, clear. What we need is here. Eucharistic Ministers There will be a workshop for new Eucharistic Ministers and anyone who wants some time to reflect on the ministry they are already serving in. The sessions will be held on February 5th and 6th from 7-9pm. Choose which night is best for you. 4 Once again we ask all of our parishioners to pray for our Second Graders who are receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The schedule is as follows: Monday Session will receive on February 5, 2018 Tuesday Session will receive on February 6, 2018 Wednesday Session will receive on February 7, 2018 Thursday Session will receive on February 8, 2018 Saturday Session will receive on February 10, 2018 Children will arrive in the classroom at the regular class time while the parents and families go directly into the Church. We will all participate in a Reconciliation Prayer Service which will be followed by individual confessions. There will be a celebration in the Social Hall following the Sacrament because there is more joy in Heaven when the lost one has returned! The children have been studying the parables of the Lost Sheep and the Prodigal Son. They understand that our Lord is ever so loving, merciful and forgiving. Their enthusiasm and joy is contagious! We are all so proud of them. (The students who attend the evening session will participate in the paraliturgy at 7:30pm. The composer of this week s recessional hymn, Jean Anthony Greif, was born in 1898 in Wala Wala, Washington. He studied organ at the Wurlitzer school of Organ in Chicago. Jean Anthony began his music career as an organist playing background music for silent films, creating mood music, and interpreting the action playing on the screen. In 1950, Mr. Greif formed the Northwestern Organ and Chime Company which he owned and operated for 15 years. In 1955 he invented and patented an electrical brain that would play the pedal notes of an organ automatically. He also invented the Instant chord finder, a small harmony and chord computer that showed what keys to play on an organ or piano to produce any musical chord in any musical key. Both inventions were manufactured in Spokane, WA. The hymn, We Are the Light of the World, was written in 1966 and is his best-known composition. In 1969, Mr. Greif founded the Vernacular Hymns Publishing Company of Spokane where he published religious music. He was an active composer his entire life and a member of the American Guild of Organists and the Knights of Columbus. Jean Anthony Greif died in #490 Page4

NOTRE DAME VISION Calling All High School Students Each summer, the University of Notre Dame invites high school students from across the country to spend a week on Notre Dame s campus. Participants spend Monday through Friday exploring how God calls us in our lives and how we might respond. During your week at Notre Dame, you will share in dynamic large group experiences, interactive small group time, profound liturgies, and excellent music. Notre Dame students lead this program, and participants get to experience college student life by eating in the dining halls, staying in the dorms, and enjoying the beautiful campus. FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 4, 2018 First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7: In this passage, Job laments the drudgery and pain all people sometimes experience in life. He talks of troubled days and restless nights. But he does mention that the days move along swiftly, which can remind us that our time here on earth is quite limited and should be well spent. Second Reading: I Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23: Paul explains to the Corinthians that he has no choice, but must preach the gospel. He tells of making himself all things to all people, in order to save some of them. He reminds them that he does this willingly, in the hope of sharing in the blessings of the gospel. Gospel: Mark 1:29-39: Jesus cured Simon and Andrew s mother of a fever, and then others with illnesses or demons came to see him. He cured those who were ill, and cast out the demons of the others. Then he went off and prayed alone until his followers sought him out. Jesus and his disciples then moved on to other villages to proclaim the good news. #490 Page6
