1 Published regularly by the parishioners of St. Paul s Episcopal Church 201 E. Ridge Street * Marquette * Michigan * (906) From Bob Railey s Pen Liturgical Practice at St. Paul s From time to time, we introduce modifications in how we do liturgy. Sometimes these are inspired by discussions occurring in the wider church, introduced to us by Kevin or by Tom Ray. You may have noticed one such current change begun Ash Wednesday. We Presiders, returning to the early Christian practice of simplicity, are no longer doing certain manual acts during the Eucharistic prayer that developed in the middle ages. Contemporary liturgical scholarship, returning to some of the primary sources of Christian liturgy, has recovered the early Christian insight that the liturgy is not a replay of the last supper, with the presbyter in the role of Jesus. Rather, the Eucharist is the community s act of thanksgiving with the role of the presbyter as that of a leading voice for the gathered community in celebration. Therefore, we are no longer 1) raising the bread and cup during the so-called words of institution, or 2) moving our hands near the bread and wine during the words of blessing. Much of this recent scholarship may be found in the recent book of Louis Weil, Liturgical Sense. Prof. Weil has visited our diocese as a liturgical consultant, and was Liturgics Professor at CDSP during Kevin s and Rise s time there. We in the liturgy team will be reading this book and sharing these and other aspects with you, some within parish forums happening after church on Sundays. Easter Season House Blessings Easter is the most celebrative of the church s liturgical seasons. St. Paul s has encouraged its members to have their residences (homes, apartments, etc.) blessed during this season. During the liturgy, the resident(s) and guests visit the land, the entryway and as many rooms as you would like included. Prayers and dialogues highlight the aspects of life that occur in each space. Normally, the liturgy continues with Eucharist, plus food, beverages and visiting; you need not include all of those it is up to you. You may invite whomever you wish. If you are interested, please sign up on the sign-up bulletin board in the chapel hallway and/or speak to Bob or Marcia. Scrip Program Alive and Well by Ann Smith Spring is here even though it doesn t look like it outside. Small things like warmer days, more sunshine and a little snowmelt lift our spirits. Some of you are returning from warmer climates and others of us are coming out of hibernation. It s time to get reacquainted with the scrip program as we think about spring. Find us after church on Sundays; we can probably fill your orders on the spot as we have a pretty good inventory. The scrip program benefits St. Paul s as well as our community as we support local and regional merchants. Remember, writing a check to St. Paul s rather than a larger store keeps your information out of the mainstream and therefore keeps it safe. Till next time, see you at the scrip table.
2 St. Paul's Healing Arts Center to Offer New Class by Melissa Eiben Four members of St. Paul's recently visited the Christrine Center in Wisconsin to receive training in order to teach Dances of Universal Peace. Their desire was to bring these dances to the community and combine them with the experience of gentle yoga and sitting meditation. The combination promises to connect participants to their bodies, their lives, their joy and ultimately their connection to each other. The dances are simple movements drawn from the world's many traditions and require no special training. Almost anyone can participate. They include simple, sacred phrases of devotion in many languages and invite us to move in our bodies with a greater sense of freedom, joy and celebration while connecting to the divine in ourselves and each other. Gentle yoga invites participation in a comfortable but simplified traditional hatha yoga practice with a focus on breathing, gentle stretching and the practice of finding comfort in the body. Emphasis will be on body awareness, self-trust, and gentle stretching within each body's capabilities. Sitting meditation practice will include 20 minutes of quiet, comfortable, exploratory quiet. There will be an opportunity to turn inward, explore and watch the activity of the mind, experimenting with and practicing the art of letting go. It is a great way to seal the activities of the evening and return home more centered and focused. The Healing Arts Center at St. Paul's welcomes all to attend the (approximately) one hour, once-monthly Yoga/Dance/Meditation workshop. Where: When: Cost: Contact: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Morgan Chapel, 201 East Ridge, Marquette The first Thursday of every month, beginning Thursday, April 3, 7-8 p.m. No cost Call Kathy at with any questions. Vestry Report for Messenger by Judd Spray At its March 20, 2014, meeting, St. Paul s Vestry heard a report from Junior Warden Jeff Hendricks on St. Paul s continuing energy conservation efforts in conjunction with the interfaith Earthkeeper II Environment initiative. Jeff reported that it looks like St. Paul s will receive a grant to assist with efforts to replace our incandescent lighting with new, energy efficient LED bulbs and lamps. The vestry authorized Jeff to spend up to $ if needed to supplement the anticipated grant funds for this project. Rector/Ministry Developer Kevin Thew Forrester reviewed the grant application which will be submitted to the Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program in early April, 2014, in support of Kevin s sabbatical later this year. The Vestry continued to express enthusiastic support for Kevin s proposed itinerary and program of spiritual renewal and exploration. The Vestry also began planning for its annual retreat by agreeing to gather on the week-end of May 24 25, Vestry members are looking forward to sharing good fellowship, good food, and good discussions.

4 "Spring into Summer" and other Notes from the Hospitality Committee by Sandy Purrington You may not be aware of it if you look out the window or step outside, but spring has officially arrived! That means it's time to announce our annual Spring into Summer picnic. Once again, Peggy and Pete Frazier have invited us to gather at their lovely home overlooking the Big Lake. The happy event will take place at 460 East Ridge Street, on Sunday, June 15, following our service -- rain or shine, snow or sleet, whatever the weather, we'll weather it together. More details in next month's Messenger. Our newly-updated directories are available on the half-round table in the sanctuary near the atrium entrance. Once again, many thanks to Geoff Smith for his heroic efforts in putting this together. Please help newcomers and those of us who occasionally forget names by wearing your name tags. You may contact Kathy Lenten in the office ( ) if you can't find yours or need a new one.
