3 Pastor s Poetry Post-Its October Although a tide turns the trees the moon doesn t turn the leaves, though chimneys smoke and blue concedes to bluer home-time dark. Though restless leaves submerge the park in yellow shadows, ankle-deep, and through each tree the moon shows, halved or quartered or complete, the moon s no fruit and has no seed, and turns no tide of leaves on paths that still persist but do not lead where they did before dark. Although the moonstruck pond stares hard the moon looks elsewhere. Manholes breathe. Each mind s a different, distant world this same moon will not leave. Jacob Polley (b. 1975) As we journey through the month of October we continue to focus on Our Lady of the Rosary. The foot Rosary that has traveled the streets of the Bronx and Mount Vernon are here at Holy Innocents! Last year I brought these Rosary Beads to our Religious Education Program and shared them with our catechists and students. It was a great way to teach the children about the Rosary. This year we are focusing and meditating on the Joyful, Glorious, Sorrowful and Luminous Mysteries. The children are praying with such love and reverence! They will tell you that Mother Mary brings us closer to her son Jesus. Each time we say a Hail Mary, we are giving our Blessed Mother a beautiful rose. When we pray a complete Rosary, we make her a crown of roses! After all she is the Queen of Heaven and Earth! 4 This year three members of the Music Ministry have received the sacrament of Confirmation on October 14th. The Music Ministry wishes to congratulate all of these young people and it is with great pride that we have been sharing these stories these weeks. Victoria Stargiotti is very special to the Music Ministry. She is the youngest of the four singing Stargiotti sisters and has been part of our ministry since she was a baby watching, and listening to her sisters participate in the musical part of our liturgies at Holy Innocents. Victoria followed her sisters and officially joined as a member of the Junior Choir. She moved up to the Teen Choir in the 6 th grade, so she could sing with two of her sisters. Victoria took on the role of cantor, earlier than most, and began leading the Saturday 5:15 PM Mass that same year. This year, Victoria is a Freshman at Pleasantville High School. Music is a huge part of Victoria s life. She loves singing, playing instruments and listening to music. For this reason, St. Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians was an obvious choice for her Confirmation name. Victoria has chosen her sister Katherine as her sponsor. They have a very special relationship and Victoria considers Katherine as one of her best friends. She knows that she can always count on her. All Confirmation candidates are required to perform service projects. Victoria worked on the preparation of the hymnals and music for choir practice each week from October through June. She also helped out at the Pleasantville Community Garden doing planting and harvesting. The food raised at the Community Garden is donated to a local food bank, Hillside Food Outreach. Victoria also worked as part of the crew for the Pleasantville Middle School s 5 th and 6 th grade play, and sold concessions and ushered for the Pleasantville High School play. Victoria is a wonderful example of using our gifts to serve the Lord and being a witness to Christ in word and deed. She is looking forward to her Confirmation and becoming a complete part of the church. We, along with all of you, pray that through this sacrament, Victoria and her classmates are enriched with the special strength of the Holy Spirit, and will become more perfectly bound to the church. The Music Ministry is very proud of her and will continue to support her growth in our faith. May the Holy Spirit bless our Music Ministry members, Cecelia, Cristopher and Victoria on their Confirmation weekend. Guide and strengthen each of them, and all of our parish candidates throughout their lives. 6 First Reading: Isaiah 45:1, 4-6 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Cyrus, King of Persia and friend to the Jewish people, becomes the Lord s anointed one, and through God s intervention, returns the Jews to their own country. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 1:1-5b Paul rejoices that the Thessalonians, newly converted to Christianity, are displaying remarkable constancy in their new-found faith. Gospel: Matthew 22:15-21 Seeking to entrap Jesus in his speech, the hostile and hypocritical Pharisees ask him this dangerous question, Is it lawful to pay tax to the emperor or not? Realizing their treacherous motives, Jesus asks for a Roman coin, and pointing to the inscription of Caesar s, he answers, Give to Caesar what is Caesar s, but give to God what is God s.
