We organize such great events as the Pasta Supper, Ladies High Tea, Penny Social, all new Faith-Based Recreation Programs such as pumpkin carving, breakfast with St. Nicholas plus many more. 3 Registration is in person with payment at the same time. Each child needs to be registered for 2014/15, even if they are attending class at this time. Every child new to our Program will need to present a Baptismal Certificate or date the child was Baptized at Holy Innocents. If they are coming from another Program, a Baptismal Certificate and transcripts are needed. If the child has received Reconciliation and First Communion, documentation is needed also. Gerard J Roggemann Coordinator of Religious Education groggemann@hiparish.org FOOD PANTRY Our May Food Pantry Needs are: canned Tuna, canned tomatoes, canned yams, pasta sauce, salad dressing, bottled juice, all purpose flour, pancake mix and syrup, Jello, corn muffin mix. Last weekend we wrote about the history of the Salve Regina. This weekend in addition to the Salve as our Post Communion meditation, we are singing the English translation, Hail Holy Queen This version which is #200 in our hymnal is the one most Catholics are familiar with and is attributed to Melchior Ludwig Herold, who was born in 1753 in Germany. Very little has been written about him, but this English translation has been used since the 18 th century. In popular culture the words of the first verse of the Salve Regina were used as a repeating theme in the song, Oh What a Circus in the musical Evita. In 1992 a rock infused version of Hail Holy Queen is featured in the movie Sister Act starring Whoopi Goldberg, which later became a Broadway show with the same title. This hymn is said to be a favorite of our Lady herself by testimony of those who have reportedly seen her in visions. One account concerning this claim relates a vision St Dominic had. He was entering a corridor of the monastery to resume his midnight prayer vigil when he chanced to raise his eyes and see three beautiful ladies approach him. He knelt before the principal lady and she blessed him. Even though St Dominic recognized her, he begged her to tell him her name. The Lady replied: "I am she whom you invoke every evening: and when you say, 'Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of Mercy toward us,' I prostrate myself before my Son, entreating Him to protect this Order." GOLDEN WEDDING MASS CELEBRATION On Saturday, June 14 th AND Sunday, June 15 th the annual Golden Wedding Mass Celebration will be held at the Cathedral of St. Patrick for couples celebrating 50 years of marriage during His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan will be the principal celebrant. 4 MAKING ALL THINGS NEW UPDATE! The Holy Innocents Making All Things New Core Team along with our cluster parishes, Holy Rosary (Hawthorne), St. Augustine (Ossining), St. Ann (Ossining), and St. Theresa (Briarcliff), recently received preliminary recommendations from the Archdiocese Advisory Board relating to Making All Thing New, the initiative from the Archdiocese of New York which is reshaping our church and how we celebrate our faith. This preliminary report indicates that our cluster has been designated for the Collaborative Model which among other things allows parishes to promote the Gospel and serve people in need by entering into formal cooperative relationships. Our cluster is scheduled to meet again soon to discuss these preliminary recommendations and formulate our response, which is due by June 8, Cardinal Dolan will then thoughtfully determine his plan which will realign the church's resources throughout the Archdiocese for a stronger and more sustainable future. He will share these final decisions this September and they will take effect in January We the Holy Innocents Core team along with our counterparts throughout the Archdioceses do not know what his final plans are but we are sure that Making All Things New is both an opportunity and a challenge to each of us. We can realize our time, talent and treasures in a broader and more communal way and ultimately enhance the vibrancy of our faith now and into the future. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems. In order to register for this event, please call or visit: : FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts 6:1-7 During the early growth of the Church, the apostles realized that they needed more disciples in order to carry out effectively the ministry of the Church. The community selected seven men, one of whom was Stephen. Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:4-9 Citing many uses of the word stone in the sayings of Jesus and in the Old Testament, Peter urges the Christians to be living stones...an edifice of spirit. Gospel: John 14:1-12 In this beautiful passage from the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, Jesus promises that he is preparing a place for the apostles. He tells them, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me. When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus answers, Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and the ministry of the word They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, I am the way and the truth and the life. Times were tough then as they are now. Challenged by the needs of the people, those whom we now call deacons were summoned to preach the gospel in word and deed. St. Benedict taught his monks in the Rule, that when one was called from prayer to serve the material needs of others, it was part of ongoing prayer. Deacons today serve well as preachers, ministers at liturgy, ministers for some sacraments and ministers of charity. They, through their witness and example, lead others to Jesus, the Way, a route to be taken, the Truth, providing His teaching, and the Life, the grace which flow from the sacraments. In a single word, deacons are ministers of service. All disciples of the Lord are called to diaconal ministry as we serve, not in ordained ministry, but through word we witness and both anticipate and respond to the needs of others. Consider those who provide for the corporal works of mercy and discover the Acts of the Apostles being lived out today.
