CANONIZATION TRIP DEADLINE EXTENDED The deadline has been extended to Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 for the pilgrimage, led by Bishop David A. Zubik, to Rome for the April 27 th canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II. The cost is $3,695, including round trip air fare from Pittsburgh, hotel, tour buses in Rome and many meals. The flights will leave Pittsburgh April 25 and return May 1. 7 Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 17, 2013 The Pastor s Corner..Fr. Lou Vallone A regularly scheduled Town Hall Meeting was held after the Anticipated Mass for All Saints on Halloween. The following are some of the topics for discussion that night. 1. Discussion was held about the annual financial report that had appeared in the bulletin the previous two weeks. The bottom line is that we are in stable financial condition, with sufficient reserves, and there are no major expenditures looming. Keep up the good work! 2. We are in the coming tier for the Diocesan Capital Campaign. We have submitted our contribution data to the diocese, from which individual goals will be computed. Our overall goal is about $330,000 (computed at 175% of our 3 year average of offertory contributions.) From this amount, 40% less expenses stays in the parish, 60% goes to the diocese. The campaign is for a 5 year pledge. We will have a facilitator from the professional company to aid us in the process. We will be asking members of the parish to form a team for this endeavor, and will begin with a retreat along with the team from St. John of God. More information will follow as I receive it. 3. As a part of the campaign, the parish was asked to give a wish list where the money would be used locally. After extensive consultation individually, at the Town Hall Meeting the following three areas were identified: a. Hiring of a Pastoral Associate on staff to help the clergy in general areas of parish life. b. Work on the foliage and surfacing of the parking lots to make them safer. c. New siding and insulation for the Church These are not hard and fast at the moment, but rather areas that the money may be used for. They will be refined and solidified as we come closer to the campaign. To be honest, I do not know as much as I would like about the process, but I will share with you what I learn when I learn it. 4. According to diocesan policy my 6 year term as Pastor of St. Catherine expired in October. My first year I was administrator, not Pastor, so Dec. 12 is my 7th anniversary. Two years ago my term at St. John of God expired. According to canon law, I must remain as Pastor with all the responsibilities, but not the protection of the law for stability, until I receive a letter from the proper superior (the bishop) relieving me. Although there is a process in our personnel policy that includes periodic review, a letter from the Pastor regarding his intentions, and a discussion by the Personnel Board, neither I nor any of the other Pastors in the same situation have heard anything about transfers. I know nothing at this point, so I will just have to continue doing what I am doing on a day to day basis until the diocese decides to focus its attention here. 5. Because of the increased attendance, we are adding a third Christmas Eve Mass. They will be in the Christmas schedule mailed out this month. Please make an effort to plan your evening so that all three will be well attended, rather than an unmanageable overflow at the earliest one. (However, being there at all takes precedence over when you are there!) SPECIAL 2ND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK Bishop Zubik has asked that a special second collection be held on the weekend of November to assist the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. This will be part of our response to the call of Pope Francis for an international effort to address this tragedy. The collection will be taken up next weekend and the funds that you so generously contribute will be used to support Catholic Relief Services (CRS) our official international humanitarian agency representing the U.S. Catholic Church. A Family Perspective...by Bud Ozar So many conflicting voices and influences make parenting difficult. In today s gospel, Jesus encourages parents to bravely give testimony and trust He will give us the wisdom to be good parents. You are not alone in parenting; a loving Father is standing with you.
