MOTHER S DAY REMEMBRANCES Mother s Day is THIS SUNDAY, May 8th and we have available, once again, Spiritual Bouquets for your convenience. This beautiful Mother s Day card set contains a card with a matching envelope and an offering envelope for the parish. If you are interested in honoring a special Mother in your life, (deceased or living - and yes, expectant, foster and mother figures are moms too!) these Gift Sets are available in church and at the parish office. Take a gift set, keep the card and envelope for your use and return the offering envelope, filled out with the name of the honoree and your donation, by either dropping it in the collection basket, or dropping it off at the office. The honoree can be anybody you want to honor for Mother s Day - Mom, wife, grandmother, mother-in-law, Godmother, sister, aunt, daughter, friend etc. These envelopes will then be placed on the altar during all of our Mother s Day Masses. Since we are putting them out a bit late, you can bring the intention envelopes with you ON Mother s Day too, for placement on the altar. We will do the same for Father s Day. The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth.

3 Seventh Sunday of Easter May 8, 2016 CONGRATULATIONS Last Sunday at the 9:00AM Mass, 12 of our children received their First Holy Communion. It was a beautiful Mass. Thank you to Cathy Weaver, the 2nd Grade teacher who prepared these children for this sacrament as well as her aide, Alexa Stotlemyer. You both did a wonderful job in passing on the teachings of our faith. We also wish to thank the Christian Ladies Society for the lovely reception afterward to honor our communicants as well as St. Catherine s Feast Day. It was a beautiful morning. A Family Perspective...by Bud Ozar Mother s Day gives us the opportunity to celebrate the unconditional love of mothers. Whether living or deceased, a mother s love always invites us to follow her example by loving generously and selflessly. This is a day to celebrate ALL women whether or not they have actually given birth. We have all cared for someone lovingly at one time or another in our lives, given selflessly for someone, and been the glue that bound everyone in the family together. We are so proud of you and everyone looked handsome and beautiful! It was so inspiring to see so many families and children in church. 7 Seventh Sunday of Easter May 8, 2016 The Pastor s Corner Father Lou Vallone Having just celebrated our great redemption at Easter (and having thought that I could take a homiletic break since I had preached so much for Holy Week), I was a bit surprised (and flattered) when a lay canon lawyer from across the state asked me a serious theological question. So, I though I could get a two-fer by making my response to her my Pastor's Corner for this week: "Dear Fr. Lou, Whom do you know in Heaven? I am serious. One person you knew personally whom you know is in Heaven, no doubt about it, and why. Just a short idea. I would love that and it is for a school project I am doing at NYU. If you can, I think you too might just go to Heaven! Love and prayers, Tish. Dear Tish, In the constructs of our faith, we can only "know" someone is in Heaven (i.e., eternally in the presence of the Beatific Vision) if the Church's magisterium has declared so. Therefore, anyone who has been declared of heroic virtue, beatified, or canonized fits in that category. In fact, in my life I have met St. John Paul II and Mother Theresa of Calcutta (to be canonized Sept. 4 this year). However, while the Church often uses her authority to declare that someone is in the presence of God eternally, she had NEVER in 2000 years declared the opposite: that someone has been eternally banished from the presence of God (i.e., in Hell.) Although the possibility of Hell must be believed as a doctrine, the actuality of any human soul being there (Judas, Hitler, the bully who used to beat me up in third grade) has never been confirmed by official teaching. We are therefore free to believe that Hell is empty and Heaven crowded, and therefore to believe any individual whom we have known and who has died to be in Heaven. So, to answer your question out of my own piety, and not theological theory, I do know someone who is in Heaven, with no doubt about it: my Mother. (Having raised me, she indubitably deserves it.) And I have no doubt I will see you there as well, but not too soon! With affection and blessings, Fr. Lou." It is no coincidence that I replied this way, since today is Mothers' Day, and I look for all the living Mothers of both parishes at Mass, to be honored, and prepare the way for themselves and us to heaven. And of course we pray to and in thanksgiving for those Mothers already in Heaven.
