THANK YOU When the flea market ended, there was still a bag of fabric scraps left. Dave Jones volunteered to take it to his sister who then passed it along to St. Mary Mother of God Church in Yatsboro, PA. This is the note we received Thank you for saving this wonderful treasure! You should have seen how excited the friendship circle ladies were when they opened the bags of fabric. They saw completed projects. There were backs for the quilts for the Veterans and lap blanket backs for our nursing home & homebound parishioners. There were pieces for the Amish as they love scrappy quilts. I saw doll clothes for Christmas surprises. Just so many items! Thank you and Bless you. With a theme of Our Journey Continues, the luncheon offers a fun day of friendship, memories, raffles and prizes and a delicious lunch. Contributions to this fund are parish share exempt.) TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Lenten journey is now complete, its mission of renewal and preparation to receive new life fulfilled. The call to worship the Risen Lord has been received, and we gather to experience together the consoling presence of Christ in word and sacrament. We are at our best today, crowded and cramped to be sure, but the fullest sign of who were are meant to be. Christ has claimed us in the waters of baptism, we have acquired wonderful companions, and together we can accomplish great things. This is the day for rekindling the old flames of baptismal commitment, so we light the paschal candle, and by its light we make yet again the ancient promises to reject evil s grip and empty promises. Today we do not recite the Creed, but respond with one voice to ageold questions. New life has to be nurtured, both the life of the newly baptized and the renewed life of those who have passed through Lent s refining prayer, fasting, and giving alms. All Board Members and committee members please plan on attending at 10:00AM in Siena Hall. Our 2nd Annual Mother-Daughter Tea All women and daughters or women and a friend are invited to a complimentary Tea and Lunch! This Tea is to honor and thank all the women of our parish for their continued support and participation in our Ladies Society Events! We are so very proud of you all! Pirate Game Update Our bus leaves St. Catherine s parking lot at 5:30PM. This is a free service offered by our parish. If you are NOT taking the bus, please call Erin to let her Baby Bottle Campaign & Diaper Drive May is our annual baby drive month. This year we will have a couple of options. During the whole month of May, you may donate any baby goods you have for the diaper drive for Catholic Charities f example: baby wipes, diapers, lotions, all size onesies, gift cards to Walmart for formula, gently used maternity items, swings, strollers, blankets, etc. We also added the Baby Bottle Campaign for a prolife institution called Genesis House in Bellevue. This institution helps women in crisis and helps them get back on their feet. It is also an adoption agency. There will be baby bottles at each door. Fill your bottle with any monetary contribution and return it to the basket. All monies go to counseling, baby items and helping the women and families in their need. Any support you give will be greatly appreciated! Imagine the shock waves that shot through the city of Jerusalem that first Easter morning. Jesus body was missing! By the time Peter spoke the words found in today s first reading, fifty days had passed, so he began by saying, in effect, I take it you know what has been reported all over Judea about Jesus of Nazareth. Of course they knew by then, but in today s Gospel we are taken back to the first day. We meet Mary Magdalene exclaiming, We don t know where they put him! What do we know? In the second reading Paul asks, Do you not know that a little yeast leavens all the dough? Do we know the power of our own faith? Do we know the effect we can have on others? Copyright J. S. 7 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord April 20, 2014 The Pastor s Corner by Fr. Lou Vallone "So I'll continue to continue to pretend My life will never end And flowers never bend With the rainfall." These song lyrics by Simon and Garfunkle anticipated by many years the theories of Dr. Kubler-Ross in her ground breaking work of thanatology (the study of death) in the book On Death and Dying. She determined through research and interviews of people that when confronted with the fact of death, people go through a pattern of emotional responses, or what she calls stages. The first is like the song: denial. We refuse to believe that it is happening: we don't accept it, even intellectually. The second stage is bargaining: we try to make deals - with ourselves, with others, with God - trying to control or change the outcome. The third reaction is anger: we rant and rail and become hostile to the inevitable. The next stage is depression: we get low, down, blue, disinterested and sorrowful. Finally, Kubler-Ross says, comes acceptance: we reconcile ourselves to what is and must be, and thereby gain some degree of serenity, peace or tranquility in the face of death. These stages are the same whether the death is of someone close to us or our own. This progression holds true, not only in facing the death of individuals, but in being confronted with the death of other things near and dear to us. For example, the loss of a job, or the sale of a house, or the break up of a marriage, or the closing of a school. Over the past several years, our diocese has experienced this in a large way with the parish reorganization project, in which 100 parishes were merged or suppressed, and some Church buildings were closed. If you read the papers, you know that some people never got past the denial or anger stages as is evidenced by the fact that there are still hopeless lawsuits being waged against the bishop. Some never got past the depression stage, as can be seen by the drastic decline in attendance at some parishes. The same thing has happened to some people who never recovered from the loss of a job, or being forced to relocate, or some similar loss. For Kubler-Ross, a secular scientist, death is the final outcome, and so acceptance is the best that can be hoped for. But today is a feast that belies that short-sighted goal. As Christians, we believe that Jesus' rising from the tomb, Easter, is the ultimate victory over death. In short, we believe that we go beyond death, to Resurrection, and so we go beyond mere acceptance to a totally different stage: joy, triumph, exaltation! And this is true not just for individuals, but for every aspect of life. For anyone who has suffered any loss this past year, of a loved person, or cherished situation: today is the day that the Lord has made for us to rejoice and be glad in hope.
