Weekend Attendance Crescent, PA September 30, :00 PM Mass :00 AM Mass :30 AM Mass Total..729 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Using beads for prayer and meditation is an ancient custom, found in many cultures and religions. The Christian rosary dates from the twelfth century, when it provided a way for ordinary Christians to learn about the lives of Jesus and Mary. Alan de la Roche, a fifteenth-century Dominican, preferred Psalter of Our Lady to rosary. This fitting name recalls an explanation of the devotion s origin. Unable to read the one hundred fifty psalms that formed the Church s official daily prayer, medieval Christians substituted first one hundred fifty Pater Nosters, and later one hundred fifty Ave Marias. By meditating on the various mysteries of the rosary while repeating these simple prayers, the faithful could immerse themselves in the whole mystery of the Incarnation and the Resurrection. The dedication of October to the Blessed Virgin Mary is an appropriate reminder of this venerable form of prayer. Faithful Christians everywhere continue to meditate on the mysteries of the rosary, praying in groups or alone. Why not take advantage of this season to renew your acquaintance with the rosary? 7 Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 7, 2012 The Pastor s Corner ~ Fr. Lou Vallone If you have analyzed the financial report to the Parish in last week's bulletin, you will see that there is a lot of good news. We continue to function in the black with increased offertory income and stabilized expenditures. We are continuing to make all of our external obligations such as Parish Share and the Education Fund (together they amount to a 27.6% tax to the diocese). We are keeping well abreast of maintenance on our physical plant (we commit anywhere from 10-20% of our budget each year for that.) And we are able to continue increasing our reserve funds for future needs. In short, we have achieved what seemed a daunting target 5 years ago when we were in debt and deficit spending: we are financially stable. In the demographics, it is also good news. Our weekly Mass attendance average is one of the highest in the diocese: we regularly fill more than 700 of 750 available seats at the combined three Masses each week. Despite anxieties, the closing of the Ambridge Bridge has not hurt us significantly. We have maintained good numbers for a "small" Parish at about 450 families and around 1100 parishioners, although there is a lot of movement - we have about a 10% turnover of losing people each year, but we seem to stay abreast of replacing them with new sign-ups. Our sacramental life could be more vigorous with more baptisms and weddings and first communions. Our confirmations are up, but unfortunately so are our funerals. I suspect a lot of that has to do with age cohorts reflecting the general population in our area. We shall keep analyzing that. In terms of Parish governance, the tactic of Town Hall Meetings and complete transparency through the Pastor's Corner and the bulletin with weekly reports of our financial situation seems to work well in having our parishioners feel and exercise a sense of ownership in the Parish. The short version is: God has been good to us, and you have been good to yourselves in bringing our Parish so far in so short a time. Keep up the good work! On a less positive note, you will be hearing a lot in the near future about the Diocesan Capital Campaign. We are not among the first wave to institute it, but by the end of next year all of the Parishes will be involved. A quick snapshot is that the Diocese has a goal of $125 million dollars. Each Parish will be assigned a goal based on 175% of the average of the last 3 years offertory. The money collected will be split 60% to the Diocese, 40% to the Parish up to the goal. It is a five year program. Our goal will be $330,000 spread over 5 years, of which we can keep $132,000 if we reach our goal. Don't panic or go off the deep end right now, there will be much more information to follow. We will discuss this year's financial report and other matters at the regularly scheduled Town Hall Meeting following the All Saint's Anticipated Mass on Halloween evening in the Church. For all these things, I constantly thank God for the honor and joy of being your Pastor!
