Thanksgiving mass This year, we will have our Thanksgiving Mass on Wednesday, November 23rd, at 6:30PM. There will still be an 8:30AM Mass on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, but Wednesday will be the Mass that we pass out the blessed bread for the families. HOLIDAY OFFICE HOURS The office will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Friday, November 24th and 25th. We will reopen on Monday with the usual hours. Please pick up these resources and TAKE THE TIME TO FILL IT OUT! Completed feedback forms can be dropped off in the office. Although they aren t technically DUE until the first of December, please plan to have them back to the church. by the end of November The holidays will get in the way of any spare time you may have to do this very important survey! It would be a shame to fill it out and not have your voice heard because you missed the deadline!!! PLEASE be proactive in the upcoming months and pray for solutions to keep our church and parish alive! The Holy Spirit can work through any one of us with ideas! I will learn something useful. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. Just for today I will be agreeable. I will not try to change or improve anyone but myself. Just for today I will have a program. I might not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from 2 enemies, hurry and indecision. Just for today I will exercise my character in 3 ways. I will do a good turn and keep it a secret. If anyone finds out, it won t count. Just for today I will do 2 things I don t want to do, just for exercise. Just for today I will be unafraid. Especially will I be unafraid to enjoy what is beautiful and believe that as I give to the world, the world will give to me. ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA S CHRISTIAN LADIES SOCIETY Annual Food Drive Our food drive continues throughout the month of November. We are still collecting non-perishable food goods to distribute to the local food pantries. This has been a very successful program in the past and we hope to continue our success. Please take all donations down to Siena Hall before or after any Mass or drop off in the office during the week. Thanks you for your generosity. Simon, chairman and founder of a Catholic think tank called " Parish Catalyst." The book is subtitled "How Four Essential Practices Make Them Thrive." There are over 17,000 Catholic Parishes in the United States and his think tank identified the top 244 of them in terms of the vibrancy, productivity and fulfillment of Catholic mission given their individual circumstances - these are the stand out parishes in the lives of their communities. One of the 244 pastors interviewed and quoted in the book is our Pastor, Fr. Lou Vallone, who talks about the success of both St. Catherine of Siena and St. John of God in a time when many parishes are declining and failing. His comments and those of the other pastors are meant as a model or pattern that can be adapted by other Catholic communities to bring discipleship and growth in what seems to be a time of abandonment and closure. There is a resurrection in seeming death for any parish, according to Simon's findings if the people and the leadership are committed to Christ, to each other and to the work of the Spirit. It is worth reading in this time of On Mission by any Catholic who wants to look forward and not back. Available online at and many secular booksellers. Good reading. 7 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 20, 2016 The Pastor s Corner Father Lou Vallone Several years ago in the Sacrament of Penance (i.e., while I was hearing someone's confession), the gentleman expressed concern over the sin of "bad language". Now, the third commandment does enjoin us against using the name of the Lord in vain, but he was referring more to vulgar words, scatological language, monosyllabic Anglo-Saxisms: in short, four letter words. I explained that this was less a moral issue than one of respect. Since usually our language becomes a pattern, a habit, and since in this particular case it often arises from impatience or anger, I advised him to try the tactic of substituting some innocuous, inoffensive words for the ones he had been using. It is less difficult to substitute a harmless habit for a detrimental one than it is to banish habit altogether, so I offered absolution with this helpful hint Some months later he returned to the confessional and gave me a report on his progress. He had decided to substitute the phrase "thank you!" for another less edifying explicative. When a driver on the road would exasperate him with a bonehead stunt, he would holler "thank you!" When someone at work would get on his last nerve with unwarranted criticism, he would reply "thank you!" When a neighbor or stranger would offer some verbal insult, he would retort "thank you!" When an unwieldy piece of equipment would frustrate his efforts to accomplish some work, he would ejaculate the phrase in the hearing of others "thank you!" In each of these instances, the emotional tone and tenor would be the same as before, but the words changed radically. And so did his outlook on life He explained that the new verbal habit made him more comfortable with himself, but even more gratifying was the effect it had on other people and his relation with them. Angry conditions were diffused by the shock of the unaccustomed phrase. Fights that could have broken out were often shortcircuited by bursts of laughter. Tense circumstances become relaxed, and even his frustration level had dropped by the "silliness" of the situation put in the perspective of his response When I was a child, I was taught that "thank you" was among the magic words in life. With Thanksgiving coming up this week, we all know that individually and collectively we have much to be thankful for, and we will express that at St. Catherine of Siena Parish with a 6:30PM Mass on Wednesday evening (8:30AM morning Mass as usual on Thursday) and at the Church of St. Mary at St. John of God Parish with a 9:30 AM Family Mass. At both celebrations, we will bless and distribute bread baked by our own confirmation students, have a collection of foodstuffs and money for the less fortunate, and most of all we will celebrate with the Eucharist, the paradigm of all Thanksgiving. This is all self-apparent. But in line with the experience of my penitent, I want to take this opportunity to say to all my friends and enemies, to all who have been good and bad to me, to all who have aided and attacked me, to all who have pleased and frustrated me, to all who complimented and offended me "THANK YOU! One and all!"
