3 Every Lent we go to the desert with Jesus to witness His being tempted by the devil. Going to the desert might not sound too appealing: hot during the day, cold at night; inhabited by rattlesnakes, tarantulas and scorpions. But lessons are learned there. God shaped the former slaves of Egypt into the people Israel during its forty years of wandering. And in the desert Jesus teaches us what it means to be God s beloved child, as we witness His quick exchanges with the devil. Satan: If you really are God s child, use your power to feed yourself. Jesus: God s word feeds me. Satan: If you are God s child, jump and let God catch you. Jesus: I don t test God. Satan: Worship me and I will give you this entire world. Jesus: I only worship God. Jesus responses came from the book of Deuteronomy, part of the Torah, the law given to Moses expressing God s covenant with Israel. Where Adam and Eve yielded to the temptation to be like God and Israel set up a golden calf to worship in place of God, Jesus put His trust in the Father. How has God called you to do the same? MEMORIALS The CANDLES that the parishioners use at the Easter Vigil. One hundred (100) come in a box and four (4) boxes are needed at $30.00 per box. PALM for Palm Sunday. No explanation needed here. We use 16 bags of palm at a cost of $40.00 per bag. All donors names will be in the bulletin Holy Week. Jesus response to temptation is the model we are to follow: Get away Satan. Lent is a reminder for us to pray, fast and give alms. By doing so we ready ourselves to celebrate the Paschal Mystery. Jesus is our example of loyalty to God, His Father and His Will. Lent reminds us to meditate on our spiritual discipline (good / evil) and its consequences in our daily lives. When Jesus speaks to us through the Scripture Readings and homily do we live what we have heard? Are we preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)? Are we planning to attend the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings and daily Mass and Wednesday Adoration? We adore You O Christ and we praise You because by Your Holy Cross You have redeemed the world. Our Religious Education students will be given the availability of receiving the Rite of Reconciliation (Confession) during class time over the coming weeks. Catechists are still needed for the Religious Education school year. We are in need of practicing Catholics that have received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation). Please consider volunteering for the afternoon sessions of the Religious Education school year (September-May) on Wednesdays for grades 3 and 6 and on Thursdays for grades 4 & 5 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Please us at the Religious Education office, hrreligioused@live.com, or call x 123/124. We offer training for new Catechists. You will be required by the Archdiocese of New York to complete a background check and view a Safer Spaces training video in conjunction with the Protection of God s Children policy. LENT is a time when we fast in many ways, including fasting from rituals of great joy, such as the singing of the alleluia. We also enter into visual fasting, by making our worship simple and clean. But there will come a time for joyous acclamations, for shouted alleluias and lavish decor. That is what we wait for in the silence of our hearts. We await the Death and Resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ to once more lead us through mourning into dancing, from darkness into light, and from reflection into proclamation of the glorified and Risen Christ. May we be found awake and waiting on that joyous day ahead!
