3 THE HIGHLANDER Page 3 3/10/2014 District Grant Project (continued) As you can see from the overview of the project, there s plenty of work for everyone no matter what your skill level. If you can t come in the morning, come in the afternoon. As the old adage states: Many hands make light work. Come help with this worthwhile project. Club Calendar Club Administration Chair Maureen McBride reminded us we will be celebrating St. Patrick s Day next Monday, March 17th w ith a special program. If you plan to bring a guest, please R.S.V.P. to Mo no later than Wednesday to insure we have adequate space and food for everyone. See Calendar of Events for additional information on all upcoming programs. Board Meeting The next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for tomorrow Tuesday, March 11th at Umpqua Bank at Walerga and Elverta in Antelope starting at 5:30 P.M. The Rotary Foundation President Patrick and Foundation Chair David Stone told those attending today s meeting that our club has a long history of support for The Rotary Foundation. They asked everyone to consider participating in the EREY program Every Rotarian, Every Year. Where does that money go? The contributions from all of the Rotary clubs in the district are divided between the World Fund and the District Designated Fund (DDF). The Rotary Foundation uses the World Fund portion to pay for the Foundation activities that are available to all Rotary Clubs. Our district uses the DDF portion to participate in Foundation grants and activities that our club and others in the district choose. This is how the upcoming Grant Project at the Children s Receiving Home of Sacramento was funded. If you have not already done so this year, please consider contributing to The Rotary Foundation. It can be as little or as much as you feel you can afford. One of President Patrick s goals for this year is to be an EREY Club. The deadline for contributions is the end of March. Let s not let him down! TELL ME MORE... WHERE TO MAKE UP A MISSED MEETING OBJECT OF ROTARY HOW TO JOIN ROTARY

IN NATOMAS MAR. 30 DINNER WITH RI PRESIDENT RON BURTON AT THE DOUBLETREE HOTEL IN SACRAMENTO HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WEEK S PROGRAM The club celebrates its 55th anniversary this week and today s program focused on the club s history as well as on its only Charter Member since 1974 Andrew J. Smith, Jr., who passed away last November. To begin with, President Patrick called upon PP Bob Spears who paid tribute to Andy by giving us background on his personal interaction with Andy since 1981 when Bob joined Rotary. Bob described Andy as being quiet but having a definite opinion on things. Bob also reminded us that Andy was like the Energizer Bunny at 80 years of age, he would still climb onto roofs to install antennas. He loved his family very much and was proud of their individual accomplishments. Next was Club Historian Cheryl Morgan, more affectionately known in Rotary circles as Sam. Sam s presentation focused on the club s history as well as on Andy s contributions to Rotary and to the community. She shared several tidbits about the club and Andy that some of us old timers didn t know. Andy was born Andrew Jackson Smith, Jr. on August 3, 1929 in Dos Palos, CA. After high school, he served in the Navy during the Korean War aboard the submarine USS Cabezon, where he worked on his first television and took a step that would lead to his career in TV Sales and Repair. Andy married his beloved Shirley on July 3, 1954 the same year they opened their business, C&S Television.

7 THE HIGHLANDER Page 7 3/10/2014 Fast forward to Stan Shaffer, an optometrist, suggested that North Highlands needed its own Rotary Club. Stan and Andy along with Dick Kollenborn, the club s first president; Rick Ericson and Lloyd Bowles started recruiting local businessmen to join Rotary. When the club was chartered on March 12, 1959, our official name was The Rotary Club of North Highlands and there were 23 members same as today. The Rotary Club of North Sacramento was our sponsoring club. During the Rotary year our name was changed to The Rotary Club of Foothill-Highlands. Andy was the club s third president. At that time, the club had gained five new members. During his presidency, Andy was instrumental in helping to organize the first North Highlands Memorial Day Parade and built a float for the parade. Other club projects included installing a BBQ at Strizek Park, holding a career day at area high schools, organizing a Christmas program for community kids and assembling and delivering 50 holiday food baskets for needy families a tradition the club continued for 30 plus years. During his Rotary career, in addition to serving as president, Andy held the positions of V.P., Secretary, Sergeant at Arms, Community Service Director (x3), Club Service Director (x2), International Service Director, Vocational Service Director, Bulletin Editor and Program Chair as well as Chairing a myriad of committees. That s quite a resume to be sure. Andy was a strong supporter of the Rotary Foundation he was a Paul Harris Fellow+4 and a Foundation Benefactor. Following today s presentations, Andy s wife, Shirley presented President Patrick with a check for $1,000 payable to The Rotary Foundation to complete Andy s commitment as a Benefactor. During his Rotary service, Andy had 50+ years of Perfect Attendance quite an accomplishment when you realize that meant coming to Rotary every week or making up at another club. There was no such thing as on-line make ups. And, in those early years, you had to make up a missed meeting within six days before or six days after today you have 14 days. In December 1987, the club inducted its first women Patti Joyce. In the 1990s, there were ten women Rotarians including Sharon Bias, Maureen McBride, Marilee Monagan and Sam Morgan all of whom are still with us. During the 55-year history of the club, we have met in several locations including the Officers Club at McClellan Air Force Base our present location under a different guise. The Board Meetings were held in the General s private dining room. The club bulletin was called The Scotarian in the early years. During the Rotary year, the bulletin name was changed to The Treadle. In the early 1990s, the bulletin didn t have a name and was referred to as the Bullsheet. In the mid-90s, the bulletin was renamed The Highlander a name that has endured. Another treasure of our club is the wheel we use at our weekly meetings. It was designed and constructed by PP Bob Meyer and was referred to as the Wheel of Misfortune.

8 THE HIGHLANDER Page 8 3/10/2014 If you landed on a two, every member paid 25 cents. It s called inflation. Here is a picture of Andy spinning the infamous wheel. Over the years, the wheel has been referred to by of host of names the Wheel of Doom, the Wheel of Fortune, the Fine Wheel, the Wheel of Mystery, the Wheel of Misery and the Rotary Recognition Wheel. In 2009, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary. Below is a picture of those Rotarians who attended that meeting. Special thanks to PP Bob Spears and Club Historian Sam Morgan for their outstanding efforts to capture the essence of the contributions of Charter Member and Past President Andy Smith to Rotary and the community and to help our members celebrate our anniversary. As a remembrance of Andy s Rotary service, President Patrick presented Shirley with a framed tribute containing Andy s picture, his Rotary badge and a plaque noting his position as President and Charter Member and service years. Thanks to Past President and Charter Member Andy Smith for a job w ell done! The Club Celebrating Its 50th Anniversary The Rotary Club of Foothill-Highlands has had a long history of service to the North Highlands, Foothill Farms, Elverta, Antelope and Rio Linda areas of Sacramento. Thanks to all those members and past members who have served the club and the community over its 55-year history. President Patrick Magana and Shirley Smith Then, as always, President Patrick asked everyone to stand and join him in a toast to Rotary Around the World and the meeting was adjourned.
