Stephens Hayward Historical Society's New Building President Paul Martin brought our meeting to order asking Paul Wallace to lead our Pledge of Allegiance. Andy Krake belted out a loud leading voice of America followed by President Paul providing the thought of the day. Visiting Rotarians: Chuck Horner introduced our visiting Rotarian: Bob Tucknott, Electrical Contractor with our Dublin Club. Guests included: City Councilmember, Francisco Zermeño with Paul Martin Former Government Relations Director of CSUEB, Bob Brauer with Kim Huggett Ed Jellen from Oakland The following person has been proposed for Club Membership. Objections to their membership must be made in writing and submitted to the Club Secretary with in 7 days of this publication. Francisco Zermeño Classification translation Services proposed by Stan Smith.

2 With a pitch assistance from Chuck Horner, Andy Krake led our club in our amusing Hello song. Announcements: President Paul reminded us of our future programs: August 19 A.T. Stephens, Executive Director, Hayward Historical Society August 26 Vocational Talks: Mona Diamantine, Beth Ehrlich, Roy Hashimoto September 9 Mary Tillman, Boots On The Ground by Dusk: The Life & Death of Pat Tillman September 16 Rotary District Governor Angela Angie Hassler Finess and Foolishness: President Paul collected fines for birthdays from Bob Sakai, Ed Phillips, Bob Scheppler, Don Lazar, Stan Smith, Nels Nelson and Doug Vieira. Club anniversaries of Debby De Angelis and Matthew Spielberg brought in funds especially from Matthew because of his trip to Amsterdam, Copenhagen and St. Petersburg. President Paul suddenly fined Mike Mahoney, Larry Ratto, Brian Schott, and George Pacheco for talking during the fines. Mike Mahoney s objection earned him a double fine. Confessing she went to Peter Pan s Neverland with her 7, 4 & 3 year old grandchildren, Gay McDaniels gave $100 to the Dictionary Project. It also cost Mike Mahoney to celebrate his wedding anniversary again. Four members were found published with photos and brief biographies in the new book, Legendary Locals of Castro Valley, Hayward and San Lorenzo by Doris Marcel and the Hayward Area Historical Society. They paid for their fame: Nels Nelson $100, George Pacheco $150, Larry Ratto $150 and Bob Sakai $66. Andy Krake piped up that he married Marty on July 24, 1976 for which he offered $40 which President Paul challenged and match at $100.

6 Speaker: Bob Sakai introduced our speaker, Victor Gauthier, addressing construction, fabrication and seismic renovation of the Bay Bridge. Beginning with the chain breaking by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Victor narrated a detailed video describing each feature of the new third largest self anchored suspension bridge from, steel plates, dampers, rivets, slide-in sections and sling jacks. Section by section, he raced through the Yerba Buena S curve, signature span, cable installation process, anchors, hindge/expansion joints, the broken bolt issue and saddle solution, shear link beams in the tower and hindge pipe beams. And yes, there is a glass elevator in the tower, NOT for tours but for maintenance.
