THIS FRIDAY AT THE STEEPLEGATE MORGAN IT S ALL ABOUT LOVE, WITH CHRISTINE SCHMIDT Bettendorf Rotarians, when asked which recent programs were most outstanding, named this week s speaker at North Scott Rotary, Christine Schmidt. Christine will share her compelling personal story of the loss of her 12-year-old daughter, Morgan, to suicide in April 2014 and her promise to Morgan and to God that she would do something to help others. Morgan was a 7th-grade honor student at Pleasant Valley who excelled as a cross country runner for her school team. She enjoyed all the things that kids her age do: going to the mall, spending time with friends, hair, fashion, going to the movies. Morgan was beautiful in all ways. She had a warm smile, sparkling eyes and a contagious laugh. She genuinely cared about her friends and family. She also had an admirable relationship with God. What people couldn t see on the outside was that Morgan was suffering in silence on the inside. She was an intelligent and strong-willed person and when bullying on social media continued to wear at her heart, she chose to take her own life. Christine founded the It s All Love, Only Love Coalition to aid in educating parents and children on the signs and symptoms of depression so that we can help prevent suicide. Christine is a stay-at-home mom, a published author of women s Christian devotionals and a voice on St. Joseph s Catholic Radio of St. Joseph, Mo. Her husband, Derek, is employed with Hon Industries, Muscatine. They are parents of a 21-year-old daughter who attends Scott Community College, Morgan s twin sister, Mackenzie, who will enter 9th grade, and son, Andrew, in 6th grade. Christine is also one of the newest members of Bettendorf Rotary.
