Kona Nightingale The Newsletter for Rotary Club of Kona Mauka Chartered in 1967 August 2015 President s Message Gary Rovelstad Speakers Door Prize August 4 Timothy Brady: Retired US Dept Health & Human Services Larry Kniffin August 11 Laura Galuzzy The Aging Coach Laura Kniffin August 18 Tammy MacAller Coalition Tobacco Free Hawaii Joe Krawczak August 25 TBA Chris Leinenweber Thirty-Five Friends July holds many things for us members of Kona Mauka, vacations, family visits from the mainland, and, without exception, a visit from the new District Governor. Sure enough, Del Green, our current District Governor was here this last week in July. Del, as other governors before him have done, asked to meet with your Board of Directors, but, unlike his predecessors, who would ask for committee reports, his primary interest was in the board members answer to just one question, "Why would you join this Rotary Club?" Or, put another way, what was our "Brand?" I've never liked that term when it's used to describe an organization or its members. It makes me think that I'm a steer being driven to slaughter in Dodge City or south to the McCandless Ranch. Even so, I get it. What is it about our club that made you join, and, perhaps more importantly, what keeps you in our club? As you try to answer this question, let me pass on some of the responses that your colleagues on the board made to Del's question. Perhaps not surprising to you would be the answers that highlighted our meeting time and the food that we serve. Underneath this practical consideration, however, the answer almost always described our welcoming culture. Many perceived us as a personable club with interesting and engaging programs which, in turn, creates an atmosphere that allows for networking and Rotary s 4 Way Test Of the Things We Think, Say and Do Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? (AND... Is it Fun??) grown-up conversations; shoes not required. We have more than the typical number of couples and a pretty good balance of men and women members who have a habit of volunteering in our community. Yes, we raise money, but we give back to scholarships, food banks, and other needs. We do not build bank accounts. The most insightful answer to Del's question simply said, "When you join us, you are immediately surrounded by real friends. Thirty-five real friends right away, no waiting. Why did you join? Give it some thought. Have a great month.

Celebrate Membership Month August is Membership Month, which means it s time to celebrate our Rotary Club of Kona Mauka, our members, and the good we do in our community and around the world. There are many ways to join in the celebration, but here are a few activities to get you started: Say it loud, say it proud! Let everyone in your social network know that you are a proud member by changing your Twitter and Facebook profile to the I m a Proud Member. Copy and save the graphic as your profile picture for August. Exchange ideas. Do you have successful membership strategies that have worked well in your community? Share them on the Membership Best Practices Discussion Group. We Are Rotary. Using the hashtag #WeAreRotary, post photos to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Vine of your club members at work in your community or abroad to show how Rotary makes a positive impact in the world. Making a difference. Rotary clubs are known for the high-impact service projects they undertake locally and globally. Share stories about your service projects and how they improve lives on Rotary Showcase. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see what Rotary members around the world are doing to celebrate Membership Month. What does Rotary mean to you? Rotary members have pushed polio to the brink of eradication, delivered clean water to those in need, improved their local communities, provided scholarships to the next generation of peacemakers, and continued to do good in the world. Nigeria marks polio-free year, raising global eradication hopes Nigeria marked its first year without a single case of polio this past Friday, reaching a milestone many experts had thought would elude it as internal conflict hampered the battle against the crippling disease. It means the country could come off the list of countries where polio is endemic in a few weeks, once the World Health Organization (WHO) can confirm that the last few samples taken from people in previously affected areas are free of the virus. All this brings tantalizingly closer the prospect that polio will soon become only the second human infectious disease after smallpox to be eradicated.

Embarking on Our Next 100 Years Page 7 Ignite When we started , our Membership was 1660 strong; using IGNITE/Vocational/Networking as a three way punch, we reversed the 5-year downward trend at an average of 85 members a year, by both adding more new members and at the same time by getting more of our members engaged in Rotary. We also chartered new clubs to fill voids and create more opportunities for people interested to join. During the last 3 years we chartered 4 new clubs (of which 2 are eclubs) with a total of 107 new members! IGNITE was successful because it is a multi-year endeavor, and thanks to the commitment of PDG Phil (Energizer) and PDG Laura (Lighting up Rotary) [gotta love how IGNITE resonates with both these themes], we now have 51 clubs with 1732 members (that s a net growth of +71) of which the recently chartered Rotary Club of Lana i expands our geographical reach. Let s keep this momentum going as we embark on this new Rotary year because together we can be a Gift to the World!
Rotary D5000 District Governor Page 8 Del Green August Message August is Membership and Extension month and the perfect time to think about who invited you to join Rotary and why you have remained a member. I ve now had the opportunity to visit about one-fourth of the clubs in our District and it is clear that our members are similar to Rotarians around the world. We joined Rotary to make a difference in our communities and we stayed because we have made friends in our clubs! As we continue celebrating 100 Years of Service with Aloha in District 5000, do you know someone that can join your club in being a Gift to the World? Invite them to a meeting or service project. Share your copy of Rotarian magazine with them. Share this link ( with them and show them how they can help impact our global community as well as the one we live in. Invite them to view the Rotary Club of Honolulu s centennial meeting featuring Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran on 'Ōlelo (Channel 53; September 2, 6, 7 and 9, 2015), to hear, first-hand, his message about Rotary and the great works being done here in Hawai i and around the world. Or, send them to RotaryD5000.org to find a club that will fit their geographic and time needs. Help us to continue increasing the strength and number of Rotarians in District 5000 by inviting someone to become a centennial member of your Club and join you in being a Gift to your community and the World!
August 2015 Rotary International President s Message K.R. Ravi Ravindran Page 9 In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wooden sign hanging on his wall that read, Det bedste er ikke for godt: "Only the best is good enough." Today, Christiansen is remembered as the inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks beloved by children around the world. But in the early days of the Lego company, its signature product was a wooden duck one built to the highest standards, out of aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego's company history tells how Christiansen used his ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk: One evening, when I came into the office, I said to my father: "It's been a good day today, Dad. We've earned a little more." "Oh," said Dad, "what do you mean?" "Well, I've just been to the station with two boxes of our toy ducks for the Danish Co op. Normally they get three coats of varnish, but since it's for the Co-op, I only gave them two. So I saved the business a bit of money." He looked at me in dismay. "Godtfred, fetch those boxes back. Unpack them and give the ducks another coat of varnish. You're not going to bed until the work's done and you'll do it all on your own." There was no arguing with Dad. And it was a lesson for me about what quality meant. Today, Lego's quality standards are legendary, and its products are the most popular toys in the world: Lego pieces outnumber humans 86 to 1. We all recognize that this success stems directly from Lego's business practices its insistence on quality, efficiency, and innovation. I compare this with our efforts in governance and accountability in Rotary, and realize that sometimes we fall short of the standards expected. The leaders at the Rotary International, zone, district, and club levels have to maintain the highest standards in governance. The RI president and directors must serve the membership in a meaningful manner; zone leaders must deliver on the investment Rotary makes in them; district leaders must provide dynamic leadership in the district and focus on transparency in accounting and timely reporting of financials; and club leaders must adhere to proper reporting functions and get their clubs onto Rotary Club Central. Just as Christiansen refused to consider sending a lesser product to any of his clients, so should we refuse to consider giving a lesser effort to any of our work. We must always demand the best of ourselves in our professional lives, and especially in our Rotary work. For in Rotary, what is our product? It is not wooden ducks or plastic bricks. It is education, water, health, and peace. It is hope, and it is life itself. For this work, only our best is good enough. I ask you all to remember this and to do your very best to Be a Gift to the World.
