1 Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church July 18 August 1, 2018 THANK YOU! While Patti Worthington attended the National Convention on behalf of Navajoland, we thank Don Robbins for taking charge in the making of 400 sandwiches for the Rescue Mission. Don was a huge help to Bill and Barb Worthington. And thank you Medelice for all that you did to make the sandwich making a success. Thank you to all of you faithful sandwich makers - I cannot thank you enough. A big thanks also goes to Rob Madden for setting up the tables and chairs, and Jarrod Phillips for taking them down. Sandwich making will be back in Maitland Hall in August. Patti and Marcia
2 Page 2 AN AMAZING WEEK OF VBS Happy July Good Shepherd! We just wrapped up an amazing week of VBS- exploring in the Workshop of Wonder. Each day we learned an important lesson during VBS such as: imagine, build, work, and grow with Jesus. As we sat down as a team to plan VBS this year, we thought about last year s successes and lessons, and we prayed hard. We always pray (as many of you do I am sure) to be a beacon into the community, to have our doors open, and to be ready to love and invite any and all children who come to share in the love of Jesus with us. We were so blessed to receive an ECS grant this year to help support the cost of VBS. We used this grant money to purchase craft materials, science materials, decorations, and food for the program. We had a great week filled with love and memories. Unfortunately, we did not have the participation from our neighbors this year as many of them were enjoying time with their families in Mexico. However, as the Children's Minister- I feel such a sense of pride. This year, our theme for the kids has been "shining Jesus' light into the world". For the past five summers I have been blessed to have this job. VBS is a wonderful opportunity to use a week out of the summer to help our children grow in their faith and friendships. These children of Good Shepherd are something to be proud of, as I have watched many of these children grow up here and they are truly shining Jesus' light into the world. I have watched them listen intently each day to the lessons of the Bible, to thank others, to share, to open up, and most importantly- to grow in their relationship with Jesus. All the while preparing to go out into the world to shine their lights. These children are our future. They will be our bankers, our teachers, our doctors, our voters, our voice as they grow up and head out into the world. The love and time we are pouring into them is so evident. They are taking away so many valuable lessons from church and what they are learning. One of the common topics we have discussed this year in Sunday school has been using that light to build up others. I know we are all aware of the plague in our schoolsthe violence, the bullying, the hatred. All of these kids have discussed and shared how they are using Jesus and their love to welcome others while at school. To pray for those they see hurting, and most importantly, to smile at each person they encounter and be kind. And while our VBS may have been a smaller group this year- my cup runneth over. I hope yours does toothank you all for your love and support of the Good Shepherd kids. A special thanks to Nicole Cantelme for being my right hand woman- thank you for your constant help, support, and leadership! Thanks to Jarrod and the Youth Group for helping with daily activities and planning. Thanks to Jean Savage for another summer of your magical storytelling as you lead the Bible stories each day. Thanks to Suzanne Bauman for volunteering to cook the children lunch each day, setting it up so beautifully, and then cleaning up. You all are truly the hands and feet of Jesus!

5 Page 5 SCHOOL SUPPLIES FOR CHILDREN It s that time of year! We will be collecting school supplies! During this time of year, there are great bargains on school supplies in all the big box stores and grocery stores. A few dollars can buy an amazing amount of supplies. So let s hit the sales, clip the coupons, and fill the box in the Narthex! The supplies will be collected on the following Sundays - July 22, 29, and August 5, and then delivered to the Food Bank. FOOD BANK NEEDS VOLUNTEERS It has been one short year since we opened the food bank satellite in Black Canyon City and already the need to move into a larger facility is here. The people in Black Canyon City (BCC) are in great need of our services and we are trying to take care of that need. In order to increase our services we need more Volunteers. Below is the list of needs and how many Volunteers we need to make it all happen. Once we have enough Volunteers we will add one more day of service. The order listed below indicates the most needed positions; BCC Operations Coordinator - A Volunteer that will oversee the operating of the Program. Drivers - More food will be needed in BCC and we are arranging for more stores to pick up from to ensure that BCC has adequate food. Warehouse Volunteers - We have a warehouse now, so now we need volunteers. Packers - 4 people that will pack each 30 day order as needed and make sure that there are adequate giveaways in the bins. Greeter - 1 person per shift to greet the clients as they arrive. Team Lead - 1 person per shift that will interview Clients that are there for "30" day food. Exit Person - 1 person that will weigh the giveaway food a Client takes The hours we will be open in BCC to serve the Client will be - Tuesday - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m hour shifts Wednesday - 1 p.m. to 7 p.m hour shifts Thursday - 9 a.m. to 3 p.m hour shifts The days for Warehouse staff will be - Monday thru Thursday - 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. - staggered 3 hour shifts. 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. THE ONLY TO REACH PAM IS foothillsfoodbank@gmail.com.

What s going on right now in Nigeria is 'pure genocide.'" -John Stonestreet, BreakPoint Christians in Nigeria are facing intense religious persecution, caught in an onslaught of attacks, kidnappings, and murders because of their faith. Read more at BreakPoint. Yet in the midst of all of this, there are men and women courageously teaching biblical truth. One such man is Steve Chia, Disciple Nations Alliance friend and master trainer in Jos, Nigeria. Steve writes, Biblical worldview has everything to do with what is happening [in Nigeria] if an enduring solution is desired. The DNA invites you to join us on July 25th as Steve shares about biblical worldview and why it is essential for transformation and living a fulfilled life. Wednesday evening, July 25 th 7-9pm The Department at Marketplace One 1 N 1st St #600 (The whole 6th floor), Phoenix, AZ Downtown Phoenix, AZ Steve Chia is a consultant civil engineer in Jos, Nigeria.
