We were able to provide a great dinner and breakfast to the crowd of bikers and support personnel at the hall, at the Fairgrounds and at St. Mark s. From loading the trucks and moving supplies to and from the locations, to seasoning and BBQing the chickens, cooking the beans and noodles, and veggie burgers and making the cole slaw and working the lines, and showing up early to make those pancakes, and help cleaning up THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. Also, Stuart did a great job with the handling of the food and keeping everyone informed with what was going on. This event is one of our biggest forms of income for our council to help sustain our council and meet many of our charity goals throughout the year. I cannot thank each and every one of you enough. Our council truly appreciates each and every one of you who came out to work and help. THANK YOU!! Our graduating High School Seniors will celebrate Mass at their home parishes again this year. Congratulate them and join them in giving thanks to Our Lord by participating at Mass with them. This goes for all graduating seniors from Sacred Heart, Queen of the Holy Rosary, and St. Peter and Paul. Our Council will recognize the 2018 graduates and present scholarships to qualified recipients of our KC Memorial Scholarships at a later date. Our Council will hold a First Degree on May 17. Please contact Jody Supak or Arlin Keilers for more information. Our First BBQ Sunday will be held on the Third Sunday in May which will be May 20th. Please call to place your order for BBQ chicken and sausage. On Saturday, May 26 from 10 am-2pm we will have an OPEN HOUSE, BLESSING AND RIBBON CUTTING for the hall. All members, their families and the public is invited to come and take part in the event. Light refreshments will be served. Father Dan and Father Matthew will be here to Bless the Hall shortly after 10 and members of the city will be here also. We look forward to seeing everyone. Tuesday, May 29 is RED ROOSTER NIGHT, so, come out and enjoy good food, cold drinks, great fellowship and maybe win a prize from our drawing. Don t forget to bring canned goods for the AMEN FOOD PANTRY. On June 13th we will have our annual Msgr. Harry and KofC Memorial Scholarship Fried PORK CHOP DRIVE THRU with Blackeyed peas, Buttered Potatoes and Seasoned Cabbage, to raise money for scholarships for our youth. Everyone is invited to come out and help with the drive thru, or help support this fundraiser by getting one of these great meals. Reserve your plates by purchasing a $10.00 ticket. Keep up the good work, helping our Parishes and community. May is the month of our Blessed Mother. It is also the month that we celebrate Mother s Day. Our mothers are a very special part of our lives. Remember your mother in a special way on Sunday, May 13th. HAPPY MOTHER S DAY!!!! Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to all of the members who have volunteered so much time, talent and monetary donations to get the hall up and going. Thank you also for all of the positive support that the KC officers as well as the Community Center officers have received from the council and their families as well as the community. Many hard decisions were needed to be made both financially as well as for the improvements to all areas of the building. We feel that we have provided the council and the community with a very fine event center that we hope can be used and enjoyed for many years to come. Also, to our wives and families who have listened to us for support in some of the decisions we made and why we had to make them, and those that supported us by pushing us to improve things by recommendations. I know that none of us on these boards were ever prepared to be leaders in this devastation but with positive support of everyone we have worked together to overcome so many obstacles. After the events we will find little things or (kinks) that we will need to work out, please let us know about them so that we can continue to move forward. Until next time, May God Bless you and keep you! GRAND KNIGHT, Arlin Keilers

2 Page 2 KNIGHTLY NEWS MAY 2018 CHAPLAIN S CORNER The month of May continues our observance of the Easter Season until Pentecost Sunday (May 20). These fifty days observance following the Resurrection celebrates how Jesus continues to encounter his disciples until the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. After Jesus rose for the dead, Mary Magdalene encountered Jesus as He healed her sorrow and replaced her sadness with uncontrollable joy. When the disciples first encountered the risen Christ, He declared, Peace be with you and their fearful hearts were healed and they were sent to proclaim God s love and forgiveness. When Thomas encountered the risen Lord, his doubt was removed and his faith restored. In short, when Jesus appeared, he did so with love for his disciples and healed their mourning and doubt. At Pentecost, we recognize how the disciples were shaken out of inaction by the Holy Spirit. For after Jesus had left them they went into hiding. The Acts of the Apostles relates the story of Pentecost. The disciples become suddenly aware that they are sustained in God s spirit and life. It is manifested by a powerful wind from heaven and tongues of fire. They were enabled to speak in tongues so that everyone of every language understood them. The were inspired to become heroes and leaders of the early church. The Holy Spirit empowered these disciples to go out into the world and make a difference. Pentecost is a great time to ask the Holy Spirit to rekindle is us the spirit of new life and enthusiasm. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit enable us to break through the hard crust of indifference or spiritual timidity to become witnesses to God s justice, peace and love outside our comfort zones. Let us appreciate that the Holy Spirit is revealed to us as one who transforms lives in a love that binds us to the Lord and to one another. We can all get in touch with the Spirit through prayer, the sacraments and experiences that open our eyes to what unites us in faith. Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Dan Kahlich, Co-Chaplain ATTENTION KC MEMBERS Our next council meeting is Tuesday, May 8th. Social begins at 6:30 p.m. with a meal and meeting to follow. Please make an effort to attend. 4 Page 4 KNIGHTLY NEWS MAY 2018 MAY IS DISABILITY INSURANCE AWARENESS MONTH Is Your Paycheck Protected? Most people see work as something that will always be there. We live our lives expecting to wake up, go to work, and complete our tasks throughout the day to provide for our families. Work and the financial stability that it provides, is often taken for granted. What if one day you wake up and you are no longer able to go to work through no fault of your own? Accidents and illness can affect anyone, at any stage in their career. How will you react to unforeseeable adversity? Do you have a plan in place if you are no longer able to perform your duty? The Knights of Columbus can help you put this plan in place and prepare for unexpected life events. Retirement is often planned, but disability is not. Chance favors no man. Too often people say that will never happen to me or I will cross that bridge if it comes. There is no bridge that carries you over the void from gainful employment to disability unless you start planning today. Disability insurance is often dismissed by working men and women because they think their jobs are fairly safe. The lives are fairly healthy. Disability they say is simply something they will never experience. The Statistics tell a different story. According to the United States government, a staggering 1 in 4 of today s 20 year-olds will become disabled before reaching the age of 67. The nature of the job is irrelevant. According to the Social Security Administration, 95 percent of all disabling illnesses/accidents happen outside of the workplace. Consider a typical male, age 35, non-smoker, who works at an office job with some outdoor responsibilities and leads a very healthy lifestyle. He has a 28 percent chance of being injured or becoming ill and unable to work for three months or longer prior to retirement. If this happens to you, not someone else, will you have a bridge to carry you and your family? If your illness or injury is among the 95 percent that happen outside of work, worker s compensation will be of no assistance to you. 7 in 10 employed Americans say they would feel the financial pinch in a month or less without their paycheck. What if you last paycheck really is your last paycheck? There is a solution however. Your membership in the Knights of Columbus gives you and your eligible family members exclusive access to disability income insurance that help safeguard your paycheck. With Knights of Columbus Disability Income Insurance, you can ensure you and your family are provided for in the event of unexpected loss of work. Our disability income insurance is designed to be flexible so that, working with your Brother Knight Field Agent, you can customize it to fit your needs. You choose the monthly benefit amount that s right for you, the elimination period that makes the most sense and the maximum benefit period for your policy. By purchasing a disability income insurance policy from the Knights of Columbus, you have the added security of knowing that you are doing business with a Catholic company that makes sure its investments do not violate Church teachings & which has been repeatedly recognized as a World s Most Ethical Company. You owe it to yourself and to your family to make sure that your financial future is secure, regardless of what happens. Don t be caught off guard by surprises. Be on guard & be prepared. Contact your Field Agents Doug or Jody Supak at (979) , douglas.supak@kofc.org jody.supak@kofc.org or stop by their office at 130 S. College St. in La Grange. There is no better time than now to discuss how the Knights of Columbus can help protect your most important asset your paycheck. Knights of Columbus P.O.
