1 St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church & School October 2012 Newsletter From the Heart of Your Shepherd Free to be Faithful For this month's newsletter article, I am sharing with you resources from the LCMS' special website Free to be Faithful. Religious Freedom is an issue in this year's election. Regardless of your political party, religious people of all confessions have taken note of the health care mandate of by President Obama's administration requiring that all employers, including most religious organizations, must cover birth control drugs and procedures, including those that can cause the death of the unborn, in their insurance plans even if they oppose such actions as a matter of doctrine. I encourage all of you to take time to become informed about this vitally important issue of religious freedom during these weeks leading up to the November election. After we conclude our Sunday Bible study on Mormonism, we'll take up this issue for discussion! God bless, Pastor Grams +

St. Paul Chargers School News We are already entering our second month of the school year. How quickly the year goes and how quickly our children grow. They grow in height, they grow in knowledge, and most importantly they grow in their love of the Lord. As an educator it is a joy to watch students grow in all three areas. As a parent I am sure you feel the same way. We give thanks for all of the families and congregation members who came to Christian Ed Sunday. Congratulations to Brianna Wilson and Sherry Byrne who were commissioned as called teachers at St. Paul. May their ministry be a blessing, and may we be a blessing to them. St. Paul students will again be participating in the Innisbrook Fundraiser. Please be encouraged to support this opportunity to help raise funds for the school. There are a number of items for sale including: wrapping paper, candles, gift bags, jam and much, much, more. If you are interested in ordering any items please contact the school office or talk to one of the St. Paul students. At the same time we will be beginning our Poinsettia Sale. If you would like to place an order, please fill out the order form with payment, and submit it to the school office by Thursday, November 1st. Both fundraisers should help to brighten and kick off your Christmas season. Thank you to Jennifer Shaw for coordinating the Scholastic Book Fair. 4 Page 2 St. Paul Lutheran Church & School Update From The Board Of Christian Education One of the goals that the Board of Christian Education has set in place is for St. Paul Lutheran School to adopt the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The staff has begun working on reviewing the standards, revising what is already in place, and implementing them. What are the Common Core State Standards? First, let us start with what a standard is. Academic standards are statements that express what a student knows, can do, or is capable of typically at a certain point, or grade level, in their learning progression. The Common Core State Standards for Math and English are world-class academic standards used by public school districts that aim to equip students with the knowledge and skills to compete in a global economy. In 2010, Wisconsin was the first of 48 states to adopt these standards, which offer a rigorous, updated curriculum for all students. Currently, the Common Core Standards for Science are being adopted. The CCSS aim to ensure that all students, no matter what public school district or state they live in, are prepared for success in college and the workforce. Common standards will help ensure students are receiving a high quality education consistently, from school to school and state to state. Teachers and schools will be better able to share best practices that enhance the learning of all students. The standards also help measure what students have and haven t learned. This allows teachers to be able to more quickly identify gaps in individual student learning while helping fast learners move ahead. The CCSS will help teachers, parents, and students chart a roadmap of clear and realistic goals for student success. If the Common Core State Standards are a public school thing, why is St. Paul School working on implementing them? First, by implementing these standards, we can assure parents that their child(ren) are receiving the same education that they would in a public school, all be it with the important element of God s Word infused into the curriculum. Secondly, this assures that our 8 th grade students that choose to go a public high school will be receiving the same curriculum/education and will be just as prepared as an 8 th grade students coming out of a public middle school. Sincerely, St. Paul Lutheran Board of Christian Education Tina Kilgore, President Steve Doell, Secretary Christine Merow Baierl Rachel Patrycia
