3 FROM THE CLUB MANAGER Report for the Month of September,2018 Total Sales $25, Cost Of Liquor: $9, Cost of Doing Business: $7, (Payroll,Taxes,Entertainment,Janitorial Etc.) NET PROFIT FROM BAR : $ 7, Transferred to General Fund $ 7, November is upon us and that means Thanksgiving. We all have something to give thanks for. I would like to thank everybody in advance who so generously donate turkeys and hams and other foods to help make our annual Thanksgiving day feast a success. Please try to donate so that we can keep the meal at such a low cost. We will be serving our dinner again this year from 11:00 until 3:00 for $8.00 per plate. Come on down and let us do the cooking and cleaning up! We always need volunteers that day! Speaking of thanks, a big thank you goes out to E-Board member Al Goins for donating his time and materials to paint the Men s restroom door! Al is always looking for ways to improve our Post. Another big thanks goes out to Frank Wilcek for solving our problem of the over abundance of handicap assistance supplies. He finally found a company to take the excess from us and make sure they are put to good use. Due to room restriction, we had to cut down on our supply. We will still keep a few items in stock for those in need. Items include walkers, wheelchairs, canes, shower seats etc. Special thanks also goes out to Duke Snyder for helping me out so much during the absence of a Post secretary. Thank you so much my friend! Please note that the band start and end times have changed. The bands now will start at 6:30 and end at 9:30pm. The change was made to more accommodate our members that retire early. The fall conference is the 1 st weekend in November and we are looking for van drivers to volunteer to transport members from around the state from the hotel to Post 36 so that they can enjoy our hospitality. Sign up sheets are on the board in the lounge. Please try to stop down and meet some new members and show your pride in our Post! I hope everyone has a warm and safe Thanksgiving holiday. -Kevin J. Smith Commander s Message Cool weather is upon us, watch our motorcycles. They will be out in force. Post thirty-six was well represented at Sons of American Legion Squadron Commanders golf tournament, down in Green Valley. Would you come to a meeting if it were shorter in length? One other thing I learned at the American Legion College is that we do not have to vote on regular Officer Reports. Watch for this change. I am happy to report that we are increasing our attendance at the General Membership meetings, September s meeting we had 41 attend, this last month we had 38. I challenge all to bring someone who has not attended one in a while, show them it is educational, but fun. Of 17 eligible we had 3 attend the Initiation ceremony this past month. Please try and make one in the future, I promise you would not regret it. The fall Conference is upon us, Van drivers are needed, please sign up for a couple of hours of time. When I did this in the past, it was a ball, talking with fellow American Legion Family members is like no other. I look forward to the Holiday season, and good times with all. For God and Country, Steven Sperl, Commander
4 HOW ARE WE DOING? A report from our Finance Officer: Income Expenses Profit/(Loss) July $29, $30, $( ) Aug $25, $27, $( 2,049.14) Sep $18, $22, $( 3,730.95) Profit/Loss varies due to dates of deposits, purchases.etc. Unit 36, Ladies Auxiliary Greetings Post 36 family, October was a very busy month, which completely flew by. Our Poker was a huge success, good job ladies! We also had some ladies volunteer with the SAL golf tourney and the adult Halloween party. We put on our annual Kid s Halloween party always a fun time for the young uns. November is upon us and soon it will be Thanksgiving, a time to give thanks for all in our lives. This month is also a good time for giving extra. Extra volunteering to your post, VA, homeless shelter, etc. Extra donations of food for the food banks, your Post, Fisher House, etc. Extra thanks to all veterans, firefighters, policemen/women, first responders, and all those others who deserve our thanks EVERY day of the year. Fall conference will be held the first weekend and all are welcome to attend. Volunteers are also needed during fall conference and for Thanksgiving week, please see Debbie for further information. Reminder that Auxiliary meetings are the 2 nd Tuesdays of every month at 6pm. The Commander has also extended an invitation to all auxiliary members to attend their meeting afterwards, anytime. Stuffed Burgers will be served Nov. 1 st. For God and Country, Shelley Merritt Unit 36 President American Legion Riders American Legion Riders The Riders have been extremely busy over the last month. As always, we have had Riders participate in multiple Patriot Guard Rider events. At times this equals three to four events a week. A big shout out to Robi for keeping us informed and including us. It is an HONOR for this group to participate. We were ready for Honor Flight, but it unfortunately got postponed to this month. I also want to give a shout out to all of the Riders who showed up and participated in the Auxiliary s Paws in Service Poker Run. It was a great turn out and we all got to ride together, for once. We also had a contingency support the Arizona Veteran s Bike Show held at the VA Veteran s Home. Kudos to Marcia, IKR, for coming in third place with her CanAm Spyder. Beating all of the Harley s, including mine. We have been spread thin on many of the poker runs, as there seems to be two or three scheduled every Saturday. I am sure it will be that way for the remainder of the year. We will divide and conquer, as we always do. I do want to take this opportunity to remind all of our members to be cognizant of motorcycles while you are navigating the roadways. It is unfortunate that I must announce that we have had two of our Riders injured in motorcycle accidents over the last month due to the inattention of drivers. One required hospitalization with a long recovery period, and the other was a parking lot incident that was not as serious. It could have been serious though, especially when you have a 700 pound motorcycle against a 3000 pound vehicle. Just take the extra few seconds and recheck your mirrors, it could save a life. Commander Hello Sons and other Legion Family members. As we head toward the holidays, there is no shortage of events at Post 36. I want to begin by thanking everyone who made the trip down to Green Valley for a wonderful morning of golf. Our annual Commander s Tournament was again a success. The only thing that would have made the day better would have been more golfers. I hope we can all remember that although we are competing, the primary goal of the S.A.L. tournaments is to raise funds for our charities. They are the real winners in all of this. And of course, I want to thank Don Jones and the rest of the hard working members of our golf committee. Great job by everyone, from getting prizes to getting hole sponsors. Awesome job guys!! Burger night continues on Monday nights. We have added a new option to our menu. We now have a choice of cheeses for you. Your choices include Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Colby Jack, Swiss, and of course American. We hope this added variety will entice you to stop in, if you aren t already a regular. Ticket sales for the Jim Click Millions for Tucson Raffle is heating up. We had the grand prize present at the post, following the Commander s Golf Tournament. The grand prize is a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee, second prize is 2 first class, round trip airplane tickets to anywhere in the world. Third prize is a cool $5,000 cash. Tickets are $25 each or 5 for $100. They are available from any Squadron 36 officer. Don t miss out on your chance to win one of these spectacular prizes! If you are interested in playing in our next Texas Hold em tourney, check at the Post for the date and time. We are looking at the end of October, but we don t yet have a solid date. I unfortunately end my article this month on a sad note. On behalf of the officers and members of Squadron 36, I want to extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Post Adjutant / Post Secretary Mike McArdle. His dedication and hard work will be sorely missed. I hope you will all come out to remember and celebrate him at the Post on November 4. Until next time -Joe Roberts SAL Commander.
