3 FROM THE CLUB MANAGER Report for the month October,2017 Total Sales $25, Cost Of Liquor: $10, Cost of Doing Business: $ 8, (Payroll,Taxes,Entertainment,Janitorial Etc.) NET PROFIT FROM BAR : $ 6, Transferred to General Fund $ 6, It s hard to believe we are now in December. This year sure did fly by and we have had a good year overall, so far. The annual American Legion Fall Conference went real well. We were the host Post for this event and many Legion members from around the state came in to enjoy our hospitality and Brotherhood here at Post #36. The annual Early Bird dinner was very well attended and Debbie and the kitchen staff did their usual great job with making sure the food was delicious and enjoyable. Thanks to all of our members that paid their dues early! I can t express our gratitude enough for all of the generosity from our members that donated turkeys, hams and pies this year for our Thanksgiving dinner! Once again, the meal was nothing short of fantastic. Special thanks go out to all of the volunteers who helped cook, carve, serve and clean up. There is an extreme amount of work that goes into making this meal happen and we truly have reason to give thanks to Debbie and all of the kitchen volunteers that helped with this year s feast. Tickets for our New Years Eve party are now on sale. The tickets are $30.00 per person and the tickets and seating arrangement are behind the bar. Please see myself or the bartender to reserve your seats for his special evening. Filet Mignon and shrimp is on the menu this year and entertainment will be provided by The Dust Devils! Seating is limited, so get your tickets now! Special thanks to Linda and Mickie for their help this year! I hope that everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year season this year! Remember to be safe driving around town during the holidays! For all that have not renewed their membership this year, I hope that you decide to stay being a member of The American Legion. For God and Country Kevin J. Smith Commander s Message As we approach the holiday season, it puts another successful Department of Arizona Fall Conference behind us. A lot of Thank You needs to go out, I will apologize now if I don t mention you by name. I must say that a few stood out. First off Kevin Smith, your management style by leading by example, is just awesome. The kitchen staff led by Debbie did a great job as usual in the dining room. Nothing but accolades about the food we served. We had need for Van drivers, Joe Cook stepped up and signed up for lengthy shifts, I can t recite who signed up to relieve Joe, but I send a big thank you. The ALR manned a table at registration, another success. Thank you to all that helped out. The Post would not succeed without all of you volunteers. Please help me in wishing Ms. April Merriman in mending her way back to good health. With that she has stepped down on the final year of her second year term as an E-Board member. I am looking for a volunteer to step up into the remaining time for this position. I will need to appoint a replacement, please let me know if you are interested. As December is upon us, my family and friends in the frozen tundra are dealing with snow already, and they ask me why I have become a Tucsonan. December 8 th is our Post Christmas party and music will be provided by the 60 s Garage Band. It should be a great time. On the 25 th, we will be closed for Christmas. A friendly reminder that the Filet Mignon/Shrimp, New Year s Eve dinner, is by reservation only!! For the good of the Legion, Steve Sperl Commander HOW ARE WE DOING? 4 JOHN P. BURNS POST 36 AMERICAN LEGION RIDERS Volunteerism is defined as the policy or practice of volunteering one s time or talents for charitable, educational, or other worthwhile activities, especially in one s community. The Mission of the American Legion Family is to give support to active military and veterans, their families, and the community in which we live. We do this by providing resources, whether it be a check or a donation of material items, to them directly or through other charitable organizations. To accumulate these resources, we rely on volunteers to help out with fundraisers and other events that are supported by Post 36. Our issue is, we never have enough volunteers to assist with these endeavors, and when we do have volunteers, it is always the same people. We all have things going on in our daily lives; whether it be jobs, children, grandchildren, or honey-do-lists that take up a majority of our time. I believe that we can all spare a few hours a week, or even month, where we can help out with something going on at, or for, the Post. The people who do volunteer for many of these events will eventually become burned-out from committing all of this time, and we will be left with few people to assist during these events. We cannot do all that we do in the Legion Family with just membership dues alone, we constantly need to raise extra funds. To do this, we need volunteers. And remember, all of this time is tax deductible come the beginning of the year. Just keep track of your time, and remember to submit that information to the Post as well. Volunteering is a foundation within the American Legion Family, and is a major reason that I joined the Sons of the American Legion and the American Legion Riders. I would like to think that is true for all of us. Unit 36, Ladies Auxiliary Hello Everyone- Where has the time gone? The New Year is closely upon us. Have you renewed your dues for 2018? There are a few options for renewing and we hope to hear from you soon. The Auxiliary has been busy with special functions, decorations and dinners. Thank you to all the ladies that come in and donate their time and work hard for these functions and meals. A special thank you to Laura and Mary Muldoon for their generous donation of gifts for the upcoming kids Christmas party and for helping with the decorations. Thank you to Alyssa Neal and Jessica Johnson for assisting with decorations and hard work for Carly s Christmas wish. A big Thank you to all my Auxiliary ladies that donated their time helping make our Post s Thanksgiving dinner a success, and Debbie and her crew for another wonderful dinner for vets and their families. Don t forget to bring the kids or grandkids and join us for the upcoming Kids Christmas Party on Dec. 17 th from 12-3pm. We will have face painting, ornament and cone decorating, food and Santa and his Elf riding in on a Harley to deliver presents to all. The Ladies Auxiliary would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! I first want to thank everyone who helped with our Thanksgiving dinner at Post 36. As always, the meal was delicious and Debbie, with the help of lots of volunteers, made it a wonderful day. Thank you Debbie for all you do. Squadron 36 continues to hold meetings, the second Sunday of the month at 2:30 pm. I m very happy to say we ve had some new members attending recently and that always makes for a better meeting. More of the official Squadron stuff shortly. Contrary to what I wrote in last month s article, we will not be having a Texas Hold em tournament in December. Some scheduling issues have pushed us back to a possible January event. More news to come next month. Our Burger Nights continue every Monday, except the first Monday of the month. I m also happy to report that business has started to pick up. And we continue to have the really BIG screen in the main hall available with Monday Night Football on, for your non-smoking pleasure. We ve had some folks become regulars back there. You should too!! Finally, I want to take a moment to discuss membership. For those of you who have already renewed your membership, Thank You! For those who have not, I want to remind you of what is about to happen. For starters, on January 1, 2018 you will be delinquent and lose your club privileges. That means you will not be served at the lounge until your dues are paid. Beyond that, you will also lose the benefits you have just by being a member. Did you know every member of the Sons of The American Legion is eligible for a free life insurance policy, just for being a member? You are. And that you are eligible to receive assistance in the event of a natural disaster through the American Legion National Emergency Fund? You are. Every member of the Sons of The American Legion is eligible IF you have paid your dues. If not, you lose those benefits. Not to mention all of the discounts we can receive. I strongly urge every member who has not paid his dues to do so as soon as possible. It is in your best interest. Also, I wanted to take a moment to say something about our Post Commander, Steve Sperl. I m very proud to say he has joined our ranks as a member of the S.A.L. Welcome aboard Commander! I also want to congratulate him on his engagement to our Auxiliary Unit President Shelley Merritt. I m so happy to be friends with you both and I wish you a lifetime of happiness. That s all for now.
