3 The Bethlehem Visitor June 2016 God's Enduring Word "'All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.' And this word is the good news that was preached to you. (1 Peter 1:24 25) Dear brothers and sisters: We long for Spring in Sheboygan, don't we? We look forward to green grass, trees in full leaf, and flowers in bloom! We look forward to outdoor recreation: camping, gardening, sports, fishing, hiking and traveling. All these things are gifts from our gracious God. We give thanks to Him and bless His name! Above all, we give thanks for His saving Word! The grass will wither. The flowers will fall. Spring and summer fly by. Only God's life giving Word will remain! This is the Word that proclaims the Good News of our crucified and risen Savior Jesus Christ. He died for our sins! He has earned for us the forgiveness of ALL of our sins. His Word and Sacraments strengthen us for the living of these days. You and I need His Word week in and week out! Without a steady dose of that Word, you and I will wither and fall. A summer without God's Word and worship leaves us spiritually weak and vulnerable in an increasingly pagan world. As you enjoy rest and recreation this summer, please take time out for worship! There is absolutely nothing more important! Remember that Bethlehem offers every Wednesday worship at 6:00 pm for those who are gone on the weekends. Remember that the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod's website can help you find sister congregations and their worship times in every one of the 50 states in which you may be vacationing A search box is located in the upper right hand corner of the Synod's home page. If you lack internet access, the Church Office can help you located a congregation in your vacation area. Remain faithful at worship this summer. 4 STEWARDSHIP June 2016 Stewardship Article For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son (John 3:16). God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays his life down for the sheep (John 10:11). Love means sacrifice. Sacrifice means a humbling of oneself for the good of another. And this is what the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ teaches us: Love means sacrifice. We love our families. And we love them by sacrificing ourselves for them. We put their needs before our own. We sacrifice our own wants and desires for their good and for their needs. We love our country. And we love it by pledging our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor to defend her. We ask not what our country can do for us, but what we can do for our country. We make sacrifices for our country s good and we do it because we love her. We love our church. And we love our church by giving of ourselves, by sacrificing our time, talents, and treasures in service to it. We volunteer to teach Sunday School, VBS, and other various boards. We help out cleaning and fixing what needs to be cleaned and fixed at the church property. And we give a portion of the income God has given us, so that the lights will go on, and the heat and air conditioning may run; so that a pastor will preach to us both law and gospel and administer baptism and the Lord s Supper; so that the Word will go forth into all the world through the missionaries we call and send out. God has called us into these three spheres of family, country, and church. He puts the solitary into a home. No one is an island unto himself. Everyone is put into a family, a country, and a church. In these spheres, God cares for all our needs of body and soul. He employs other members of these spheres to ensure that we have everything we need for this body and life and for the next. These callings place a claim upon us, a claim upon our presence, our prayers, our time, talents, and treasures. They give us a duty. That duty is to love. And love means sacrifice. And sacrifice means that we humble ourselves for the good of another. So then, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another (1 John 4:7 11). And love means sacrifice. Change For The Future The next collection for Change For The Future will take place the weekend of June 25-26, so mark your calendars to bring your box of change to church. If you are unable to bring in your box, please contact the church office and we will make sure to send a collector out to get it.

Lutheran Witness Renewals Those who wish to either renew their subscriptions or subscribe to The Lutheran Witness may do so by submitting $15.96 (checks should be made payable to Bethlehem Lutheran Church) along with your name and address to the church office or by enclosing the same information in an envelope marked The Lutheran Witness and placing it in the offering plate. The deadline for renewing or subscribing is Friday, June 24, Renewals/subscriptions will be sent in immediately after this date. SWD Day At Noah s Ark The South Wisconsin District is sponsoring a day at Noah's Ark on Friday, June 24, The cost is $29 for 3 years and older and includes an all you can eat lunch buffet. 6 MORE JUNE NEWS In Appreciation A sincere thank you to Arthur and Leona Winkler for being the driving force behind the church decorations at Pentecost for a countless number of years. As Art and Leona retire, the red Pentecost torch is being picked up by Bev and David Fischer with the assistance of Judi Knier, Jeanette Gast, and Georgiana Staff. The Tongues of Fire continue to flicker with the movement of air in the sanctuary courtesy of the Moncrief/Irish families. They are continuing the longstanding tradition of the tongues mobile designed and executed by Bill Moncrief for Bethlehem many years ago. Next Youth Group Meeting 7 th -12 th graders, mark your calendars for Sunday, June 12 from 6-7:30 for next youth group meeting. Ice Cream Buckets Needed Social Ministry is looking for clean, large sized ice cream buckets. Please put them in the Social Ministry basket located in the Century Room. As we see all the beauty the Lord give us, it reminds that we too are given new life in Him. We re cleaned by His blood from all our ugly, hurtful, death-giving sins. Thank you for this springcleaning Lord. At our May 3rd meeting, we received important and encouraging information from Karen Carter, President of Bethesda Auxiliary, about ways Bethesda can serve us and how we can help support them. Bethesda has resources and a curriculum along with many other materials for use by congregational members who may need their services as well as scholarships for those who would like to serve in Bethesda s programs. Watch for more on this vital ministry. On May 7th, a funeral honoring the life of a former Bethlehem LWML president and longtime member Ruth Wilke was held with her children giving moving tributes to her. She truly did serve the Lord with gladness and is now doing so with joy in heaven. All of us in LWML who knew her remember her dedication and commitment, and her great smile. To close our year, our Bethlehem LWML members will meet for lunch at noon on Saturday, June 4th at Sprecher s (the old Highland House building, located at 8th and Indiana. Ask to be directed to the room reserved for us. Please bring any paper plates, napkins, cups, etc., coffee, teabags or boxed snacks as well as any chemo caps for the ingathering for our South Wisconsin District Convention to be held June in Madison. Our next regular meeting will be Tuesday, September 6th at 7 p.m. in the Century Room. We have some exciting plans for fall, so mark you calendars now. Our Zone Fall Rally will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on October 18th at 6:00 p.m. Elections for several offices and our new Spanish ministry Pastor are on the agenda, so mark your calendars.
