3 The Bethlehem Visitor November 2016 My Dear Christian Friends, Thanksgiving Day A technical change or an adaptive change? In the autumn of 1621 the new settlers to our country gathered with some native Indians for a three day thanksgiving feast to celebrate a good harvest. This is probably why pilgrims and turkeys have become so attached to Thanksgiving Day. This event in 1621 was not a holiday, but simply a gathering to express thankfulness and share in the Lord s bounty. Thanksgiving Day as a holiday dates back to 1863 when President Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving Day as a national holiday on the last Thursday of November as an encouragement for Americans to give thanks to God for His provision. Since then Thanksgiving Day has remained a national holiday. As Christians we rejoice that our nation observes a national day of thanksgiving. However, Christian stewards may very well question whether our current Thanksgiving Day celebration is a technical change or an adaptive change. What s the difference between a technical and an adaptive change? Actually, there is a big difference! If the celebration of Thanksgiving Day is simply one day to pause from the busyness of life and work and give thanks in whatever way people wish to express thanks, and then get back to the regular swing of thins, it becomes little more than a momentary technical change. We do it for one day and then get on with life as usual. If, however, Thanksgiving Day provides us with the opportunity to express our thankfulness to God for all His blessings, and then continue to express our thankfulness on an ongoing as is it is more of an adaptive change. Simply put, a technical change is a once a year event, but an adaptive change is a change in behavior that continues throughout the year. Jesus taught us to pray give us this day our daily bread. Dr. Martin Luther in his explanation of this petition indicated that daily bread includes everything that has to do with the support and needs of the body and that we as God s people receive our daily bread with thanksgiving. It is a very good practice to be regular and consistent in our prayers at mealtimes. Truly our Lord is good and His mercy endures forever. Saying prayers like this helps us remember that thanksgiving is a daily activity of God s people. Praying daily also helps us practice thanksgiving in a adaptive way. This encourages us to remember that thanksgiving is a daily way of life, not just a once year holiday. God s good gifts included healthy relationships, special talents time, the privilege of sharing the good news of Jesus, financial resources and so much more. Jesus frees us from the selfish use of all these gifts and the Hoy Spirit helps us live like the children of God who freely, joyfully and daily use all of life and life s resources for God s purposes. Happy Thanksgiving Day and may your celebration be another reminder that thanksgiving is meant to be a daily response for all that God so richly provides. Pastor Alan Kubow Update My dearest friend and colleague, Pastor Alan Kubow, suffered a stroke on Saturday, September 24, following our Bethlehem Music Fest. God in his infinite mercy has spared him from an y paralysis or speech problems. He does have problems with being able to read and understand the written word, and is experiencing partial blindness. At this point, he is working hare in therapy twice a week and working at it hard at home each day. If you have a chance to talk to him you will still see warmth of his personality, his fine sense of humor and his GIGANTIC FAITH. Please keep him and Sue in your prayers. All Saints Day Weekend Worship November 5,6 and 9 Bethlehem will remember those who are at home with God and will bring to mentions those members who have been called home this past year. 4 STEWARDSHIP LCMS Stewardship Article November 2016 O give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His love endures forever (Psalm 136:1). The love of the Lord does endure forever because the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ, is risen from the dead, lives and reigns for all eternity. He was crucified for our transgressions, but He is raised and lives forever for our justification. We are acceptable to God in Christ Jesus. This is indeed something for which we give thanks. We give thanks in our prayers. We give thanks in the hymns we sing in church. We give thanks by talking about it with our friends and neighbors and teaching it to our children and grandchildren. And we give thanks by giving to the church a generous, first-fruits portion of the income He provides us. Giving is giving thanks. It is one of the concrete ways in which we thank God for all He has done for us. This includes not just what He has done for us here in time, but what He does for us for all eternity. He provides for all that we need in both body and soul. He is more ready to give than we are able either to receive or even ask. That is who He is. That is His character. He is good and His love endures forever. Let us then give thanks in all these ways, not in one way or the other. But rather in all things, everything that we do and say, whether it be in word or deed, in prayer and praise, in teaching and giving, let us give thanks to God for He is good.

(Ps. 95:1-6) After a very busy (and long) October meeting our Bethlehem LWML will hold their next meeting (much shorter) on Tuesday, November 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the Century Room. Featuring: Opening The U in Jesus led by Audrey Braatz, and the topic Atheism and Agnosticism as well as prayer concerns for those in need of God s special care led by Roxie, and closing prayer by Lily. Please remember your mites! If anyone who may not be an LWML member would like a mite box to use for contributing to our many LWML missions please see our display in the Century Room. There are also free brochures on LWML as well as devotions and other materials. Our Zone 8 LWML held it Fall Rally on October 13th at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Vicar David Blas, our area Hispanic Lutheran Ministry missionary, as our speaker. He is a dedicated, friendly, and persistent future pastor who searches and follows through on every opportunity to reach out to our area s Hispanic people. He s already held a first bilingual VBS, had new members communed and baptized, and mentors teens at schools (including Lutheran High where his oldest son is a freshman), and will have his first group of adults confirmed soon. While based mainly at St. John Plymouth, he rotates to area Lutheran churches. We will continue to collect materials for this ministry, especially items for children, such as Christian coloring books, crayons, markers, colored pencils, Bible story books, etc. Please place items in our LWML basket. Our LWML Winter Getaway will be held January 27-28, 2017 at Wintergreen Resort in Wisconsin Dells. The theme is Rooted in Love...Serving with Gladness. More on this later, but if you are a young woman and would like a relaxing, practical, enriching time, our LWML South WI District has a grant of $ to help with your costs. You must apply by December 1st. (See Jeri Gundlach for more information). We ll do Build-a -Bear to give to Angel Hugs for kids fighting cancer. Registration is $60.00 and hotel cost for four in a room is $ Blessings to all our church s women members from our bountiful, generous, and forgiving Savior.
