2 The Bethlehem Visitor March 2015 My Dear Christian Friends, We have come into the season of Lent. Lent is a time of repentance and renewal. Lent is a time when we come face to face with both who we are and what we have been in contrast to our baptismal vows. Lent is a time when we rediscover what we can become by God s grace, power, and indwelling. Lent is also a time for repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus withdrawl into the wilderness for forty days. Because Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, we skip over Sundays when we calculate the length of Lent. With thoughts of forgiveness, restoration, repentance, fence mending (so to speak) and needed spiritual strength for the day we gather weekly for our Lenten worship services at Bethlehem. The service times are Wednesdays at 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. The following pastors will be participating in a Lenten pulpit exchange at Bethlehem during Lent, under the theme, Singing with the Exiles. Isaiah will shape us as we listen to sermons delivered by our pastors and pastors from sister congregations. March 4, Rev. Steele - Sermon title - Break Down the Gates, based on Isaiah 45:1-8 March 11, Rev. King - Sermon title - Get Out, based on Isaiah 48:17-22 March 18, Rev. Kretschmar - Sermon title - One Little Word, based on Isaiah 49:1-6 March 25, Rev. Kubow - Sermon title - He Has Eyes for You, based on Isaiah 43:1-7 Soup Suppers will take place each Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday in Holy Week - April 1 - Readings focus on the tragic figure of Judas - worship 6:00 p.m. Maundy Thursday - April 2 - Holy Communion - 6:00 p.m. Good Friday - April 3 - Solemn Holy Communion - 1:00 p.m. Tenebrae Service of Darkness - Holy Communion - 7:00 p.m. Holy Saturday - April 4 - The Easter Vigil with Holy Communion - 5:30 p.m. Easter Sunday - The Resurrection of Our Lord - April 5 Sunrise Holy Communion - 6:00 a.m. Festival Holy Communion - 8:00 a.m. Festival Holy Communion - 10:30 a.m. Easter Breakfast served in the Parish Activity Center 7:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. May the Lord bless you and keep you as you continue to support God s most holy work, in Jesus name. I remain you servant in Christ, Reverend James L. Hartman

4 more MARCH NEWS Saturday Bible Class Being Offered "An idea whose time has come!" Saturday, February 21st, began a Bible Study opportunity for those who attend the 5:30 pm Service. Bible study takes place in the Century Room from 4:15-5:15 pm. Our first topic of study is: "The Mormons: Who They Are, What They Believe." The Mormon Church (aka The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) means different things to different people. From its feel-good, familyoriented TV commercials to its Grammy- and Emmy-winning Mormon Tabernacle Choir to its bicycling missionaries, the Mormon Church is high profile all the way. Founded in the early 19th century, this religious movement boasts more than 15 million members and 85,000 missionaries, ranking it in the top five of "Christian denominations" in the U.S., according to the National Council of Churches. But what makes this group distinctive and how does it differ from other Christian churches? Questions like these and more are addressed in Mormons: Who They Are, What They Believe As a religious group, Mormons are no strangers to controversy. Let's see, special revelations from God, the murder of its founder, regional expulsion and opposition by various groups, polygamy, and a host of teachings and doctrine peculiar to itself and unlike mainstream Christianity-have all put Mormons on the periphery. This Bible study will look at the group's origins (Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, Brigham Young, and others); the discrepancy between Mormon beliefs and orthodox Christian teaching and faith; the meaning of some of its rituals (baptism of the dead, endowments for the living and dead, temple garments, celestial marriage); and the prominence of the temple in the life of a Mormon. It will feature comments from individuals who have been deeply immersed in the Mormon belief system. It will show how some, upon exiting the Mormon Church, found themselves bewildered and disillusioned, often cut off and ostracized by their families, ready to abandon religious faith altogether. Real-life stories from those on the inside and other expert commentary add depth and authenticity to this engaging study. A discussion guide complements the video, further exploring this fascinating topic through Scripture-related passages and Internet links. Led by the pastors, this course of study uses video resources from Lutheran Hour Ministries. This Bible Study will be repeated on Sundays from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Bethlehem Cooking Club Do you consider yourself a foodie? Do you love to cook? Is your cookbook collection breaking your shelves? Why not join the Bethlehem Cooking Club. The cooking club is a group for beginning cooks to experienced chefs that will meet once a month and collaborate to create a selection of food. Different months might include an ethnic theme, trying a brand new recipe, or making a freezer friendly meal. The cooking club will emphasize sharing learning and fellowship. A short meeting will be held at Bethlehem on Tuesday, March 10 th at 6:00 p.m. in the Century Room, to discuss the first meeting and theme. If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Bauer at or m_ertelbauer@yahoo.com. Updated personal information If you have made any changes to your name, address, phone number, etc. Please make sure that you contact the church office with your updated information. You can call the church office at or jodi.damrau@ourbethlehem.com with your updated/correct information. Thank you for your help.
