1 Pennsylvania District 14 D Lions August 2018 PAGE DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS August 2018 District 14 D- Details 8/3-5 First State Council Meeting 8/16 Lebanon County Sight Picnic 8/18 Cabinet Meeting Region I 8/23 Key Member Picnic 8/30 Passing of the Banner 9/3 Fiddlers Picnic New Holland 9/16 Landisville Car Show 9/20-23 USA/Canada Forum Columbus Ohio A Message from District Governor Gene Hilton Howdy Lions! The lazy, hazy days of summer are here in force. It's peach season! Picnics and fairs make way for farm shows and festivals. If you club is involved in these activities make sure you announce it in the newsletter. If your club needs help, let surrounding clubs know. We need that spirit of cooperation so we can continue to serve our communities. That's what we do. We serve. When needed and where needed. Men, women, young, old, united in one cause-to serve. Everyone can help in some form. Think outside of the box. Approach your fire companies, boro councils, police force. They know the community's needs. Partner with them. You might find a new service project, or a new member. Let the community know what you are doing. Invite them to help. We have to shed our old image of guys sitting around writing checks. Invite someone 10 years younger than you. Invite both parents, encourage them to bring the kids. The District Governor's team is here to help your club with some new ideas. Invite them to your club to give a presentation. Your club Presidents and Secretaries will be getting a District directory shortly. There is lots of experience and knowledge inside those pages, feel free to use it. With the State Council meeting this Aug 3 and 4 in Harrisburg, Lebanon County Sight picnic Aug 16, Key Member picnic Aug 23 and Passing of the Banner there are many chances for fellowship, fun and food. Remember to know your numbers. A little fun contest I am running this year. My blood sugar will be checked at the August Cabinet meeting and again at the May Cabinet meeting. Each club gets a free guess. Additional guesses are $5. I will pick one correct club guess from each Region and will donate $500 in those 5 clubs names to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health Diabetes Center. Any additional money will be donated to them also. So when I come, hide the desserts. I think giving me extra dessert is the best plan. Keep on serving. ROAR!

3 PAGE 3 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS August 2018 Message from the 1st Vice District Governor, William Grager It seems that only yesterday, I was looking out the window at the falling snow as I was writing my Newsletter greeting. As we are almost through the summer and look forward to the fall months, our activities and service opportunities are increasing dramatically. I wish all our Clubs well as we prepare to engage in a plethora of initiatives. The 101 st International Convention is now past and we look forward to a renewed sense of commitment as we embrace the next century of service, beginning with the inspirational guidance of IP Gudrun Yngvadottir. Leadership training opportunities are already being planned and I strongly urge many of you to consider service as a District leader. There are many ways that we can serve our communities and fellow Lions, and leadership is not beyond our understanding and abilities, it merely requires a servant s heart. After all, we are Lions, we have what it takes. Please feel free to contact me at any time to discuss the endless possibilities in the days and weeks ahead. Some upcoming dates to keep in mind are: PA State Council of Lions Clubs, August 3,4 at the Red Lion Harrisburg Hershey Hotel; August 15, Leo Club Excellence Award applications are due; August 16, Lebanon County Sight Picnic, 6:00 PM, Lions Lake Park, Lebanon; August 18, District Cabinet meeting, Lancaster Tennis and Yacht Club, 1:30 PM; August 23, PDG Abe Shrom Key Member Picnic, 6:30 PM, West Earl Lions Park; August 30, District 14-D Passing of the Banner, 6:00 PM, Marietta Fire Co. No. 1; September 20-22, USA/Canada Forum, Columbus, Ohio. Please refer to the District Newsletter and District, State, and LCI web sites for updates on all important events. In closing, as we continue to serve and grow, I reiterate my request for your help in continuing to provide leadership and guidance for our District. LCI currently lists 48 active Clubs with 1380 active members in 14-D. We should be very proud of our growth, not only in numbers, but most importantly in service. I ask that we all work together to provide for our communities needs as together We Serve, and seek to grow Lionism Beyond the Horizon. Message from the 2nd Vice District Governor, Roy Estes We are Proud!! Well we are all back from the International convention. Energized and ready for a new lion s year. The cool weather and rain were a welcome surprise this past week after the Vegas heat. We had great entertainment, interesting speakers, good training seminars. Lots to see and we had the opportunity to hear our new International President Gudrun Yngvadottir and her ideas for this new lions year. She would like for us to start new clubs but at the same time concentrate on retaining our present clubs and members. This is the only way we are going to get our organization to grow and be able to serve more needs. Her theme is We Serve. Her message is Beyond the Horizon. We were well over our goal of 100 million people served last year. Now LCIF S Campaign 100 launches a campaign to raise over $300 million over the next 3 years. But it s impact will last for generations to come. With our carnivals, community fairs and farm shows and other fund raisers soon starting and ever changing new ideas for fund raisers, we will be able to meet our goals. With things like Blindness, Vision Impairment,Diabetes, The Environment, Hunger, Disaster or a Child with an illness or Cancer how can we not serve, WE ARE LIONS. It s in our blood. Don t forget LCIF, but our service starts with the people in our own back yards and neighbors our friends. When our neighbors see, or are a part of, or are helped by what we do is when Lions shine the best. Head up, Shoulders back, Chest out, a Smile on your face. We are Lions, Yes I am a Lion!! Yes we do need more lions and leaders would you like to help? The smile on a child s face or a life saved is what you get out of it. Looking forward to working with you. If I can help please call or text / lionroyestes@gmail.com I m here to help you serve.

11 PAGE 11 DISTRICT 14 - DETAILS August 2018 THE SPECIAL 3 OF 14D LIONESS CLUB S AUG SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!! July is gone & the Dog Days of Aug. are here & another year has begun. New officers, new members (?), projects, ready to roll. A new year for Dist. 14D with DG Gene ready to ROAR along with his 1st VDG Bill & 2nd VDG Roy. They will be working in unison for the good of the Lions & Lionesses & all they ask in return is for support. Let s get the new year off to a good start by getting monthly reports in each month. Reports are to be sent to Lioness Co PDG Kathy at pdgkathy@ptd.net or P.O. 29, Talmage, & to the following: DG Gene Hilton at genehilton1@gmail.com, or 566 W. Market St., Marietta, 17547, 1VSG Bill Grager at bilbomzk@gmail.com or 175 Old Post Ln., Strasburg, 17579, 2nd VDG Roy Estes at lionroyestes@gmail.com or 804 Furnace Hills Pk., Lititz, & State Lioness Coordinator Geraldine Towsen at peacefullion@verizon.net or 117 Stone Fence Rd., West Chester, This info will be in the new Directory which I will see that your Pres. & Secretaries receive in the beginning of August. You can also go on the District website at district14d.org, click on Resources, then Club/District Resources where you will find a copy of the Directory. Read the District Newsletter while you are connected to the website. It gives info on District news & events, giving you a broader view of what you are a part of. As a point of interest, there will be the annual Research Seminar of the Pa. Lions Sight Conservation & Eye Research Foundation on Sat., Oct. 20 to be held at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center University Conference Center. I mention this because, as a District Governor, I attended this seminar & found it to be a most interesting event, informing all about new innovations happening in the area of eye research. It s exciting to learn where your money, that you donated, is going to & the great strides that have been & are being made. You can call Karen Minick at for more info. You, with your donations, are a part of this endeavor to help those with eye problems, possibly someone you know could benefit from this research. Hard to think of fall, but it will be here in the blink of an eye so think OCTOBER & THE RALLY; more info to come. Enjoy the Beach Boy summer, Dist. Lioness Co PDG Kathy
