I hope now we can say that the snow is gone and the weather is changing to the good. I think we can all say that this year the winter seems longer than any other year maybe because we had such a long and cold weather and so much snow. I had to cancel several of my club visits. It was just a week ago that I had to cancel a visit and now just one week later it was 70 degrees and did not have to wear a heavy coat. The Clubs we have to visit yet are Grasston Lions, Eden Valley Lions, Motley Lions, Lake Henry Lions, Roscoe Lions, Pine City Lions, Kimball Lions, Rock Creek Lions, Onamia Lions, Lincoln Scandia Valley Lions, Askov Lions, Sturgeon Lake Lions, Finlayson & Giese Lions. In March, we had the opportunity to have a new club in District 5M8. The club is called the Sauk Rapids Tinville Lions Club. Why this name was pick for this club, first of all, it is in the Fire Department area of the Sauk Rapids Fire Department. Secondly, if you go outside of this place were the club meetings are held at Rollie s Longnecks and Rednecks and look around you will only see business places are all made with tin siding. I was very surprise to see that we ended up with so many lions in this new club. We had such a great attends from the District and outside the District. Our speaker PID Brian Sheehan gave an outstanding talk and installation of the new members and officers. This past month, we celebrated a 30 th Anniversary of the St Augusta Lions Club that was formed in The speaker was PID Brian Sheehan, who did a great job. Many clubs in the district were in attendance. We also had the chance to celebrate the 75 th Anniversary of the Staples Host Lions Club. The speaker there was International Director Mike Molenda, who talked about the history of what happened in the year the club was charter and the history of the club and what they have accomplished over the past 75 years in lions. Lions came from all over our district and surrounding districts to celebrate this event. Lion International Director Mike did a wonderful job. It is hard to believe that my term as District Governor has only a few months left. Bill and I attended the Multiple Convention and Council Meeting in Morton, MN in April It was a great convention and you will hear more about it in the next newsletter My Dream was to see 5M8 membership in the Plus as of April. The membership is a Plus this was a goal of mine. Another goal was to have clubs in the district have a gain in the membership by 1 in each club with at least 2 women joining the clubs which also was a goal of mine. When we all work together we can make a difference in our clubs and our District. It shows that We Serve. I would like to see this continue on for the next 2 months. As I write this article we had dropped 197 members and gained 213 members of a net gain of 16 plus members. So after 5 years of being in the minus we are at a plus, Thank you Lions. Let s have an excellence 2 months. Enjoy the warm weather and Follow Your Dreams while growing in Lionism. DG Donna Mae and PDG Bill
2 Page 2 HAULING LOADS OF LIONS D I S T R I C T G O V E R N O R E L E C T D U A N E F I N G E R Here it is at the end of April and I haven t started any spring activities. The only nice days we have had Marilyn and I were indoors at the MD5M Convention in Morton hosted by Milroy Lions Club. They did a fantastic job on the convention, with good food, speakers, seminars and entertainment. It was fun for all that attended. 5M8 had a good representation there. Thank you for attending. By now the Officers Training has been completed. The GLT team, headed by PDG Frank Leidenfrost, with instructors PCC Jim Diehl, PDG Pete Kleingartner, 1 st VDGE Ted Peterson, Zone Chair Mike Cramer, Lions Lori Steinemann & Lion Charlie Gunderson and myself, conducted the training sessions. The responses from my fellow Lions has been positive. If some of your officers did not attend, you need to get the booklets that were used at the training sessions. They are a great source of information for the offices of all Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers and Membership Chairs. Contact me or your zone chair for copies. I m still looking for Lions members to fill positions on my 5M8 cabinet. These positions are, 2 nd Vice District Governor, Zone Chair for Region 1 Zone 1, Youth Outreach and Peace Poster Chair, and Quest Chair. If interested in any of these positions, contact me at Most of all, we need a 2 nd Vice District Governor. Most of the possible candidates are concerned about the cost of being a Governor. Lions Club International picks up most of the expenses as being a District Governor. The Multiple District MD5M pays a lot of the expenses for the District Governor Elect. The district does pick up expenses also. Yes, there are out of pocket expenses, mostly for your spouse or companion. What expenses we have incurred, has been worth it because of the great Lions we have met, locally and around all the Lions Conventions we have attended. It s not just the money, it is also the time commitment when being a governor. What I m hearing from Past District Governors, it s an experience you will never forget, creating new friendships that last a life time. So please consider the position of 2 ND Vice District Governor. District Governor Elect Duane Finger IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS H a v e h o p e i n t o m o r r o w, h a v e f a i t h i n t h e e v e r l a s t i n g, a n d t a k e c o m f o r t i n LEO J. 3 1 S T V I C E D I S T R I C T G O V E R N O R E L E C T T E D P E T E R S O N April has been a busy month for me. It actually started on the 31 st of March with Sauk Rapids Tinville Lions Charter night. What a wonderful night welcoming in to the district a new Lion club. April 1 st I was at a zone meeting in Swanville, what a nice shelter they have there for meetings. On the 2 nd of April Lion Frank Loken and I attended St. Augusta s 30 th anniversary. That was a nice evening with Past International Director Brian Sheehan as keynote speaker. April 3 rd I was to travel down to New Munich for a zone meeting, but the snow storm postponed that until May 1 st. Four of us Lions attended Staples Host Lions 75 th Anniversary on April 10 th. Director Mike Molenda was the keynote speaker. The only zone meeting I missed was Region 3 Zone 1 because of weather (snow storm). April 8 th the district started Lions and officer training; it s been a lot of fun talking with the different members from throughout our district. So far we ve been in Cold Spring and Pierz as of the time of this writing; with Sandstone and Staples remaining. I hope everyone made one of the training sessions. I check MyLCI (Lions International reporting web site), 38 clubs at this time of writing have reported their club (PU- 101) new officers for Lions year As you have your club meetings please report your next year officer to MyLCI. I will be checking on these reports from time to time; keep them coming. The PU-101 needs to be reported by May 1 st for the information to get in the MD5M Directory. We are still looking for a 2 nd Vice District Governor for We really need to Page 3 have someone step forward to serve. Serving with you to meet the needs of our communities, Lion Ted Peterson First Vice District Governor Elect CLUB EXCELLENCE PROCESS The Club Excellence Process (CEP) is a fun, interactive process that can help every club improve service, enhance its membership experience, and develop goals and action plans that will keep your club on track for growth and continued success. Clubs can choose between two formats: CEP Pro and CEP Lite. CEP Pro is a facilitator-led workshop for clubs that want a trained Lion facilitator to come in and guide members through the workshop. CEP Lite is a self-guided workshop for clubs that would prefer to have a member of their own club lead the workshop. To find out more about CEP, contact GLT Coordinator PDG Frank Leidenfrost. (taken from the newsletter from International President Barry Palmer)

10 Page 10 USABLE GLASSES GIVE NEW LIFE MAY IS LIONS RECYCLE FOR SIGHT MONTH Eyeglass recycling is one of the Lions most popular activities. Refractive errors can be easily corrected with eyeglasses, yet millions in developing nations lack access to basic eye care services. Lions have recognized the urgent need for corrective lenses and c continue to lend their support to the Lions Recycle for Sight Program. Starting an eyeglass collection in your community can be an easy and rewarding activity that will raise your club s visibility and provide your fellow Lions with a great deal of satisfaction in serving others. Contact local businesses, schools, libraries, places of worship, city administrative centers and eye care professionals. Invite them to assist with your collection efforts by hosting collection boxes. Use Lions Recycle for Sight resources for your collection campaign. (This can be found on the LCI website.) Send your collected eyeglasses, reading glasses, frames and sunglasses to one of the official Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers. (or give them to one of your district board members) Report your club s eyeglass collection efforts via the online Lions Club Service Activity Report. LCI provides a variety of tools to help you inform your community about your projects. Check out these resources and tailor them to your club s needs. In the United States, Walmart stores with Vision Centers have LCI/Walmart co-branded eyeglass collection boxes to facilitate the ease of eyeglass donations from the public. Glasses collected at these locations are sent by Walmart to designated official Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers. For more information please contact Health and Children s Services: eyeglasses@lionsclubs.org PEACE POSTER CONTEST Peace, Love and Understanding is the theme of the Peace Poster Contest.
