1 Trinity Baptist Church exists to proclaim Christ and make disciples of those who claim Christ, all for the glory of Christ. January 2015 TBC Discovery Newsletter FOCUS Week 2015 Welcome to 2015! If we can count on anything in life, it s that time continues to march on: day by day; week by week; month by month; year by year. For some of us, life has become so routine and monotonous, we fail to see the potential that each day holds. When the busyness of our daily schedules controls us, we often fail to embrace each day as a new opportunity to live fully in God s grace. We tend to forget that God s mercy is new every day. We run the risk of living as if God s grace is not sufficient and His plan is not joyous. None of these realities are attractive. The fact is, Jesus said that He came so that we might have abundant life (John 10:10). Later, still in conversation with His disciples, Jesus said that the reason He encouraged them to remain in Him is so that His joy may be in them and that their joy may be complete (John 15:11). So the question for us is: How do we remain in Him so that our joy may be complete? While much could be written here, certainly one answer is that we remain in Him through an intimate prayer life that is scripturally informed. Jesus promised that if we ask anything in His name, it will be done (John 14:14). 2015, will mark the fifth year that we will begin the year by intentionally humbling ourselves before God in prayer. We will focus on our need for Him and our desire to live lives that bring Him glory. This year, we have invited theologian, author, and seminary professor Dr. Don Whitney to join us and lead us in a conference on praying through the Scripture. My hope is that God will do wonderful and amazing things in and through Trinity Baptist Church as we seek Him with our whole hearts. Please plan on joining us for the different events and prayer opportunities that we will host beginning Sunday, January 4, See the FOCUS WEEK schedule on page 2 for more details. Nate

3 The Cooperative Program What is the Cooperative Program? This question came up recently, and it made me think this is a good time for us to revisit this long standing and vital program to all Southern Baptists. Taken directly from the Southern Baptist Convention s (SBC) website for the Cooperative Program, : The Cooperative Program is Southern Baptists unified plan of giving through which cooperating Southern Baptist churches give a percentage of their undesignated receipts in support of their respective state convention and the Southern Baptist Convention missions and ministries. Since its inception in 1925, the Cooperative Program s effectiveness has been dependent upon individuals, churches, state conventions, and various SBC entities working toward a common goal of sharing the gospel with every person on the earth. How does it work? Through the faithful giving of every household (showing gratitude to God for his faithfulness to each of us) connected to a Southern Baptist church, the Cooperative Program receives support toward the proclaiming of the gospel around the world. Churches collect tithes and offerings and through their respective budgets, assign a percentage of their undesignated funds to the Cooperative Program. These funds are submitted to each churches respective state convention where the monies are subsequently forwarded to the national convention (SBC). Specifically, our church (TBC) assigns seven percent (7%) of our undesignated funds received through tithes and offerings and we send these monies to the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT). Generally, the BGCT retains about seventy five percent (75%) of these dollars and sends the remaining twenty five percent (25%) to the SBC. At TBC, we have a practice of designating forty percent (40%) of our dollars to go to the BGCT and the remaining 60 percent (60%) goes to the Cooperative Program for the SBC. Then what happens? Once the Cooperative Program receives their money from the state conventions, they allocate the money to various missions and ministries under the umbrella of the Cooperative Program. Generally in 2014 the Cooperative Program was scheduled to give 50.4% to the International Mission Board (IMB), 22.8% to the North American Mission Board, 22.2% to theological education ministries (seminaries), 1.7% to the Christian Ethics and Religious Liberty Ministries and finally just under 3% to operating costs. You can see the actual recommendation for allocation of Cooperative Program funds in at this website: What does this mean for TBC? As we participate in the Cooperative Program, we are committed to being part of the largest denominational effort in the world when it comes to the Great Commission. We help put missionaries on the field in Texas, North America and around the world. And we help ensure the men and women who feel called to full time ministry have access to the absolute best seminaries in the world! So in closing, maybe I can show what happens to a dollar when we send it to the Cooperative Program. For every $ goes to the BGCT and 60 goes to the SBC. Of the 60 to the SBC, about 30 goes to the IMB, 13 goes to the NAMB, 13 goes to our seminaries and the remaining 4 goes to the remaining ministries and operating costs. If we send $115,500 to the Cooperative Program, using these parameters above, it would be distributed as follows: BGCT - $46,200 SBC - $69,300 (Includes IMB - $34,930) (Includes NAMB - $15,790) (Includes Theological Education - $15,385) (Other - $3,195) In closing I would like to say two things: One, the Cooperative Program is without a doubt, the most significant attempt by any denomination of churches in the world to address the Great Commission. Second, we supplement the support to the Great Commission provided by the Cooperative Program through our direct offerings to the Lottie Moon, Annie Armstrong, and Mary Hill Davis programs. Can we say we are a Great Commission church? I certainly believe we can. Daniel Coward, Missions Associate

6 Safety Necessitates Change You may recall an article referring to some new safety policies we published a few months ago. The changes we implemented then have been helpful and have gone a long way in keeping our children and youth safe and our facilities secure. However, there still have been some instances of people entering our building without our knowledge and this puts our members and facilities at risk. In order to stop this from happening again, we are taking a few extra precautions, particularly on Wednesday evenings. For the security of our kids and youth, we will now have a security guard on duty during our Wednesday evening activities. Also, we will be changing which doors will be unlocked on Wednesday evenings. Below, you will find the new policy we have put in place for building access on Wednesday nights. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to making our church as safe and welcoming as possible. Wednesday Evening Building Access: At 5:00pm, only the ROC Breezeway doors will be unlocked. At 7:45pm, the ROC Breezeway interior doors will lock. The ROC Breezeway exterior door will remain unlocked until 9:00pm. A security guard will remain on duty until 9:00pm to allow access to the building for members needing to pick up their children or to be a part of the adult choir.
