WE EXIST TO PROCLAIM CHRIST AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF THOSE WHO CLAIM CHRIST ALL FOR THE GLORY OF CHRIST April 2012 Vol. 16 No. 4 In their book For The City, Matt Carter and Darrin Patrick ask the question What makes a great church? They note that too often, one s evaluation of a church depends on personal preferences. For instance, perhaps the recent college graduate from Los Angeles, California wouldn t consider the hymn-singing, organ-playing, liturgy-driven, church a great church. Likewise, the person who is only familiar with singing hymns may not consider the contemporary, praise-band-driven church all that great either. The obvious danger in evaluating a church based on subjective criteria, as Carter and Patrick note, is that we fail to define success by God s criteria. Take a moment to consider what you think makes a church great. If your answer includes faithfulness to God s Word, then you are on to something. Faithfulness, however, must not be limited to a doctrinal statement. Such faithfulness to God s Word must be lived out in the lives of the church members. In other words, a great church, in large part depends on church members who are faithfully committed to applying God s Word in their every day lives. Our mission, as a church, is to proclaim Christ and make disciples of those who claim Christ. To the extent that we actively speak the gospel message and live out the truths of the gospel, we are being faithful to God s Word. To the extent that we are living like Jesus, loving like Jesus, and leaving what Jesus left behind, we are being faithful to God s Word. And when God s people are truly faithful to God s Word, such a church can and will be used of God to make a difference. By God s grace, we want to be a church that makes a difference in Amarillo and beyond. We want to be a church where the lost find life, where the broken are made whole, and where the hurting are encouraged, and where believers grow in Christ-likeness. May the Holy Spirit s presence and ministry in and through us be so strong and refreshing, that we cannot help but make a difference for Christ in our community and beyond. Serving Together, Pastor Nate

It has been exciting to begin reading together the book For the City by Matt Carter and Darrin Patrick. We have had and heard so many great conversations around the church about what it means to be a church that is for our city. On Wednesday evenings, I am teaching through some of the concepts presented in the book and discussing how to apply what God is saying to us, around the tables in the Fellowship Hall. I want to invite you to join us from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. for the next three weeks, April 4, 11, and 18. We want to hear what God is saying to you, and what ideas might spring up in you for the gospel in our city. Please grab one of us in the hall at church or give us a call. We want to encourage you and help you think about how God might use you, your Sunday School class, your small group, or something entirely new to bring the gospel where God has planted you or to somewhere entirely new in our city. God has brought this group of people, Trinity Baptist Church, together at this time, in this place, and for His purpose to reach this city, to speak the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and to bring the Kingdom of Jesus Christ right now. We are going to be part of something bigger than ourselves - it is happening now. Todd Blackhurst Associate Pastor

ANOTHER WAY YOU CAN BE FOR THE CITY NAVIGATOR TRAINING The Amarillo Navigator Program is a great way for an individual, a small group, or a Sunday School class to get involved in the life of our city and make a difference for a family. There are several upcoming training opportunities that you may attend if you are interested in this opportunity. What is a Navigator? A Navigator is an individual and/or group of individuals (family, small group, church) who has the willingness to help an individual and/or family navigate their way from poverty to success. Here are a few more details for you: 1. As a Navigator, your responsibilities will be to participate in one of the Navigator trainings that are being offered on: Sunday, April 15, from 12:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Paramount Baptist Church, 3801 S. Western; Tuesday, April 24, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Amarillo College B and I Center, 1314 S. Polk Tuesday, April 24, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Amarillo College B and I Center, 1314 S. Polk 2. A Navigator must attend the Opportunity Conference on Saturday, April 28, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Central Church of Christ located at 1401 S. Monroe. This is where you will be matched with your family or individual. There will also be an opportunity to be matched with an individual or family at our upcoming TBC Community Health Fair. 3. The time commitment varies. Time commitment seems to be more in the beginning and tapers off as the relationship builds. Usually, it is a call or two a week and perhaps a face-to-face visit once a month. As the relationship and trust build a phone call is usually preferred by both the Navigator and the individual and/or family, generally once every week or two. 4. You will help a family break down barriers that may prevent them from overcoming the obstacles in their life. For example, you may need to help them begin the process to get their GED, register for college, and/or help them access the resources in our community. There are a multitude of issues that prevent access to resources. You will be their compass. 5. Anyone you know can be a Navigator as long as they are willing to be compassionate, respectful, maintain confidentiality, and honor their individual and/or family as an important relationship that will change the lives of their communities and themselves. 6. Navigators will be supported by a network of peer Navigators. You do not have to know all the resources in our community. The training will give you the primary skills you will need to get the information. Help will always be a phone call away. 7. There will be continued development of the Navigators once a quarter. This will include processing and finding out what some of the challenges or obstacles may be. 8. Forms can be downloaded from our website at trinitybaptistamarillo.org or picked up at the church office.

TBC PICTORIAL DIRECTORY Jordan Hodge has agreed to take pictures for our in house directory on Sunday, April 1, during the morning and evening services, and also on Sunday, April 8, in the morning. Please come prepared and drop by the hall outside the Music Suite to have your picture made. EVERYONE is invited to have their picture made or updated. ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONAL S DAY Wednesday, April 25, is Administrative Professional s Day. We have four incredible professionals on our staff who do great work, week in and week out, serving our church body. Melinda Eaton faithfully handles the financial and business aspects of the church. Kelly Caldwell is the center of the wheel and keeps all the moving parts in order as the pastor s secretary. Dawn Peters is most often the voice of the church when you call and keeps order over the adult and children s ministries. Jen Williams is responsible for helping keep the music, student, and counseling ministries on track, and does so with a joyful spirit and usually a song playing somewhere near her. The pastoral team is especially thankful for these ladies and how they work hard and faithfully to help us accomplish the ministry God has given us. SPRING TRAINING 2012 Sunday, May 6, from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m. For Spring Training this year we are bringing Justin Lopez, the executive director of For the City from Austin, Texas to speak. Justin will be sharing two specific things with our whole church. He will talk about the journey of their church to become a church that is for their city, and then share how members of their church worked that out as lay people all across their professional lives. MISSION NIGERIA Planning is underway for the June trip to Nigeria. Dates are tentatively scheduled for June 8 through June 17. If you are interested, please contact Darrell Pearman, Jim Bass, or Nathan Murphy for more information. TAIWAN MISSION TEAM Please begin to pray for the Taiwan Mission Team: Esther Waters, Cheyanne Jones, Matthew Farley, Emily Bell, Evan Waters, Sarah Jones, Jay Hufstedler, Jordan Hodge, Hunter Bullock, Duane Lintner, Zachary Scoggin, Kitty Soo, Caitlyn Nutt, Allison Everett, Jeff Ritter, Sherrill Ritter, Nathan Fike, Todd Blackhurst, and Katelyn Blackhurst. MISSION PERU Peru Mission Trip August 18 through August 27, 2012 Have you ever wanted to visit South America but never found the right time or opportunity? We are taking a small group to three cities in Peru (Lima, Bagua, and Lambayeque) at the end of this summer. We will be working with pastors and church leaders in each of these cities on how to not only share the gospel message, but also how to disciple new believers and be Christ-like role models in their daily lives. We are planning the trip now and have a couple of spots still available. If you would like to be a part of this mission trip, please contact Ken Hansen at , or by at ken@tbcamarillo.org.

FIRST FRIENDS UPDATE First Friends has been a part of Trinity Baptist Church for 13 years. We love having the finest Christian preschool and kindergarten in Amarillo and part of that is having the best people serving in leadership. Denise Fortenberry has been the director of First Friends since August of 2010, and teaching since the fall of At the end of this semester, Denise has decided to step down as the director of First Friends. We are so thankful for her service and grateful for the many years she has dedicated to the children and families of TBC. In order to insure a smooth transition and stable future for First Friends, we have hired Cassie Larson to step in as director upon Denise s exit. Cassie Larson has been married to her husband Chris for 12 years, and has been a mommy to her son Dane for five years. She is the daughter of Mike and Judy Connelly and spent most of her formative teen years here at Trinity. Cassie graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University with a degree in Secondary Education. After teaching at Caprock High School for 13 years, she left the teaching profession to be a stay-at-home mommy. In October she became a teacher s aide for First Friends, and considers it a blessing and joy to spend time with the children in our program. Cassie is really looking forward to supporting the teachers as they work to provide the very best early childhood education for the children in our program. Cassie has been promoted to assistant director to work with Denise on a transition plan and then assume the full duties of First Friends director at the beginning of the summer. Registration is underway and at this printing, most classes are already filled for the Fall Semester. As you see Denise around the church, please be sure to tell her how much you appreciate her. But most of all thank the Lord for giving us such wonderful and graceful people to serve His body. SMALL GROUPS FOR THE CITY I want to thank all of you who have served the Lord and our church this Spring through our Small Groups. Your faithful ministry has been so encouraging to the life of our church body. As we wrap up the spring semester, it s also time to begin strategizing for the fall. As a church it is our desire to have a gospel centered Small Group in every neighborhood and culture of our city. Many of you will want to continue with your current groups and we will have registration in August for those groups. In addition, over the next couple of months, new group leaders will announce their plans for planting groups and begin recruiting members to help them. If you are interested in helping plant a group to reach the place where you live or work, please contact me at , or todd.blackhurst@tbcamarillo.org.
