1 WE EXIST TO PROCLAIM CHRIST AND DISCIPLE THOSE WHO CLAIM CHRIST ALL FOR THE GLORY OF CHRIST Sharing the Pastor s Heart Jesus makes it clear that apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). In other words, when we fail to abide in Him, we accomplish nothing of ultimate value for His glory. According to Jesus, when we fail to abide in Him, we fail to bear fruit and that s a big deal because the branches that fail to produce fruit, He takes away. Therefore, failing to abide in Christ is a detriment to spiritual vitality. In fact, Jesus says that such a one is thrown away like a branch and withers (v.6). He says that the fruitless tree is cut down and becomes fuel for the fire (Matthew 7:19). Simply speaking, we could classify fruit as both internal and external. The fruit of the Spirit is the Christ-like characteristics that God s Spirit creates within the believer. Such fruit affects our actions, attitudes, conversations, and thoughts. Gospel fruit, on the other hand, is all about conversion when a sinner turns from his sin and trusts in Jesus for the forgiveness of sin. Fruit bearing is essential. It s also impossible in our own power and wisdom. It s only the Holy Spirit that is able to transform the sinner s heart from stone to flesh (Ezekiel 33:25-27) and to sanctify the heart of the believer (Galatians 5:22). That fruit bearing is essential means that the Holy Spirit s ministry is essential, both in our personal lives and in the life of Trinity Baptist Church. Call it our Declaration of Dependence. Every year, as we begin a new year, let us focus ourselves on this Truth that apart from Him, we can do nothing. As we focus on Him, let us join together in prayer, asking Him to do what we cannot do produce fruit. As we incorporate an annual week of prayer (Focus Week) into the life of our church, we are admitting that if anything meaningful for the glory of God is going to happen, it s going to be because God is at work. Isn t that what we want? Don t we desperately long for God to be glorified in everything we do, both individually and collectively? Don t we long to see lives transformed by His glorious grace? Don t we long to see marriages strengthened, relationships restored, and forgiveness ruling? And don t we long to see sinners flee from the wrath of God into the open arms of a loving Savior as the gospel goes forth and God s Kingdom increases? Let s ask for it! Be part of Focus Week 2011 Sunday, January 2 Evening Prayer (6:00 p.m.) Monday, January 3 Noon Prayer (11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.) Tuesday, January 4 Morning Prayer (6:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m.) Wednesday, January 5 Evening Prayer (6:30 p.m.) Friday, January 7 Morning Prayer (6:15 a.m.) Serving Together, Pastor Nate
